Donn Piatt When 1 was a young man trying to rot into a law practice out m Ohio and eager to advertise myself by appearing in court a fellow was indicted for arson lie came to me explaining that he had no money with which to pay a lawyer but that he thought I might like to appear in a case so important and that if I would do the best I could for him he stood ready to du any thing for me that he could of recompense I took the case of course It was a complex one and it offered opportunities for brow beating and balling uj itnesscsa process that specially impresses the public with the sagacity of a lawyer who does it successfully Then by any chance I should succeed in acquitting my client my place at the bar would be assured as that of a sharp young feller who had beat en the prosecuting attorney himself But in telling my would take his case the demon of betrayed me Just across the street from lodging was a negro church and there was a revival going on at the time They revived till 2 oclock or later every night with shoutings that interfered with my sleep With playful impulse I said to the accused man You seem to be an expert in the arts of arson If youll burn that negro church Ill feel that you have paid me full price for my service in defending you I defended him and as the witnesses against him were all of shady charac ter I succeeded in securing his ac quittal About 4 oclock the next morn ing a fire broke out under alt four corners of that negro church before the local fire department got a quart of water in action it was heap of smoldering ashes hymn tXfoksand all A week or so later I alctter exclient He wrote from St Louis on way west he said He expressed the hope that I was satisfied with results and begged me to believe that he was a man of honor who never Railroad system show that although in 1908 and 1909 its various lines carried a total of 762658 passengers on ItS 24000 miles of track only one passenger was killed as a result of a train wreck In also unfavorable for the old man or woman misses the variety and change of scene which walks or drives afforded and misses also the stimulus of family life at meals and in family gatherings great to con fine the leg by plaster bandage splint or brace as soon as it can be done with safety so that the sufferer may leave the bed and get about on crutches or in a wheelchair mingle once more with the family and get again In some very favorable cases the fracture is what is called impacted that is the broken ends have been pressed together in such a way as to hold each other When this hap pens union of the fracture is very apt to occur but in most cases healing of the fracture does not take place and the patient is condemned to a cumbersome brace for the rest of life In any case even thi
