on that and all days The proclamation is as follows To the People of Kentucky The American Flag Association organized to perpetuate the love of our people for the flag and the earn est patriotic spirit which that love strengthens sends its reminder that Tuesday June 14 1910 will be the one hundred and Tri fr4the and stripes theflag of the United States I call upon all of our people to join in cherishing the love of the flag on June 14 I order that the flag be displayed on all State build ings and invite the celebration of the day I call upon the Mayors of our cities to recognise and order flags to be upon the municipal buildings of their cities and by proclamation invite their fellow citizens to do the same upon their private buildings- I appeal to the newspapers cherish the interest School for the Deaf a theater for the entertainment of deaf mutes is about to be estab lished It will by no means confine itself to pantomime but will make use of the sign language The Taming of the Shrew already has been presented in this manner with great success This may be the beginning of a wider movement thau is suspected Enunciation and the use of the voice have grown so bad on the American stage of this generation that the sin language would be a welcome relief in many cases We have grown too sophisticated for Punch and Judy and are not yet sufficiently sophisti cated for Maeterlincks theater of marionettes of the shadow show of Gordon Craig The architects are not helping us in the matter of acous tics the mystery of which seems as ever so as the actors show no signs of interest in this ele ment of their art we must cast about for something like the Wisconsin plan There is of course the and that is in fact in high favor with the multitude But the moving picture has its limita tions It is only pantomime plus machinery after all and in despite of Hamlets scorn we do crave words words So bring on the sign language drama Wilted Woodpeckers Now comes the cry for woodpeck ers in our national forests in tana Much of the timber is already infested with the destructive pine borer and thousands of acres of fir and spruce are threatened so is the insect increasing A forest ranger who has been in the service for many years declares that artificial means are powerless that wood peckers alone can check the ravages of beetles v er and one of mans valuable allies in efforts to hold insect life in check To satisfy his hcirly appetite the woodpecker is kept con tinually busy his search for food but with the reckless destruction of his sources for getting a most use ful living he too is becoming scarce The conservation of our forests as well as other sources so vital to our future prosperity has become a a matter fur serious consideration How much our diminishing forests parks and orchards are dependent upon the birds few have carefully reckoned When the plague of moths or beetles has denuded our wooded areas we shall be fully awakened to the inestimable value of the winged wardens They are indeed among the greatest of our national assets Not only do the forests the orchards the harvests depend upon the birds but also even human life In the present article a departure is made from the usual custom and treatment and little else than is considered Doctors as a rule ignore corns seeming to regard their treatment as belonging exclu sively to the chiropodist The re suIt of this is as usually happens when the uninstructed or partly in eructed try to practise medicine or when one treats himself that the is often maltreated and the corn instead of being
