hVV M MM R KentuckY VOL XII NO 11 GREENVILLE KY THURSDAY APRIL 21 1910 50c PER YEAR IN Perpetuation of The Coal Supply Until recently there has been lit tIe thought of economy in coal pro duction or utilization For every ton mined another ton or more has been wasted either in the shape of coal dust or slack or coal left in the ground Mining methods have however improved and the loss now amounts to 40 per cent as against 60 per cent a short time ago In many mines as high as 75 per cent of the coal is recovered Like wise much higher efficiency is being secured in the utilization of the coal A single example will serve to show the possibilities in this line In extensive experiments trade by the Technologic branch of the Unit States Geological Survey it has been found that by first converting the coal into gas and then using it in a gas engine double and in some instances over three times the effi ciency can be secured that is ed under the ordinary steam boiler For industrial purposes therefore jve at once step practically double if not treble the coal area of the country Moreover the sensational discovery was made by the Survey tests that the lowgrade lignite the Northwest and Texas underly ing an area of some 100000000 acres when used m a gas engine developed more power than the best Iocohontas coal under ordinary steaming methods From the Poca hontas coal the Geological Survey plant produced 28 horse power per pound while the gas pro ducer generated p6 horsepower per pound or 334 times the efficiency for the gasproducer plant over the team plant These lignitic coals have been looked upon as of little if any commercial value now the regions where they arc found arc considered as possible great industri al centers Kill the Flies the last month has already brought the advance guard of one of the worst pests of summer flies Against these insects the dangerous j of which are now well known the health department has frequent warnings which cannot however be too often repeated The disease carrying ability of the fly is what makes it dangerous Medical experiments on this point have developed astonishing results In one case a fly one day was chlo roformed and transfixed with a red hot needle after which it was placed in a sterile salt solution One per cent of this solution was again put into another sterilizing it remained unchanged for forty eight hours At the end of that time the fly was crushed with a sterile glass rod and drop plated In of all this process bacillus typhosus was found It is up to the housewives cities prevent conditions in which flies They become abundant where there is light and moisture Waste food in the home rotting vegetable or animal matter sink water and grease are all propagating grounds for the fly Garbage cans should be frequently cleaned and should have fitting lids A little kerosene oil poured into them whether they are empty or full has a good effect Flies should be kept out of sick rooms This should be an imperative rule Uncooked food should be screened anc1 a vessel containing milk should always be covered Dontbjayfood f stores and other s unscreened There are many fly killing articles sold but most of them have draw backs which make them objection able A 5 to 8 per cent solution of formaldehyde with a little sugar in it J3 a pfjeap cppvenient de gtructive agent Do not relax be failing of its expected effect or perhaps acting in some curious manner to science Sometimes he even writes bewildered letters to the medical papers telling ot a mysteri ous patient he has who has dangerous of all There is no excuse for the who leaves medicine bottles children can re ci them or who has the carbolic acid or the ammcna on the washing stand A few simple rules in this regard can be at the time of the panic in November 1907 was gradually reduced until it was wiped out in the autumn of 1909 Today not only is there no surplus but the indications arc that during season there will be a large shortage due to the steadily increasing volume of business THE interstate commerce commis sion has ordered a reduction in pullman fares and made a difference 4n Crates to be charged for upper how much more the public contributes in tips so that anything like decent service may be obtained will doubtless Jead to another reduction in fares Tins price ot pyre Para India rub which in 1995 was Norris Rowe Show the organization made a tour that embraced the wild Canadian Northwest where Indians Mounted Police and ferocious wild animals are plenty From the Indians the showmen acquired a large number of wild beasts Then upon the recent tour of the Mexican Republic the menageries of the two Mexican circuses were purchased and the already large collection owned by Norris Rowe so that the young showmen can well afford to open all dens in the street parade and still have a complete collection in the menagerie tent Every morn ing at 1030 finds the picturesque cavalcade upon ihe streets A bare of trumpets and a crash of of music by the various bands announce the coming ot the parade Elephants march abreast camels dromedaries and elk march behind a herd of demure Shetland ponies and these in turn are followed by the plumed Kights and their Ladies on thoroughbred educat ed steeds Then come the beautiful heavy draft stock drawing the long lines of dens twentieth year ot the Norris Rowe Circus and from season to season they have acquired wild animals until now there is no other show that contains more wild animals in their huge double manageries than Norris Rowe Everyone should
