although there arc patients with whom the agony travels from one nerve to another The first thing to ascertain in a case of persistent neuralgia is whether the trouble is due to some organic condition or whether it is simply just a case of a sick nerve calling for help The neuralgia which has an organ ic basis is called symptomatic neuralgia and may be present as one of many other symptoms in tumors or in certain inflammatory affections or tuberculous lesions which are in such position as to compress the course of the nerve at any point Neuralgia pure and simple is called idiopathic and may be compared to the screams of an angry baby who declares its needs in the only fashion it can command The only person competent to Judge whether a particular case of neuralgia is symptomatic or idiopathic is of course the physic ian and if the pain is traceable to some organic trouble any treat meat directed to removal of the pain alone would be simple loss of time case of simple neuralgia the first thing to do is to find out the underlying cause for it may be ac cepted as an axiom that perfectly well people do not have painful nerves Young children and old people are rarely sufferers from It is a trouble that attacks those who are living the active adult life and especially people in middle age when the various fatigues of r that life are most prone to overtake us It is often one of the sequels i of a long illness such as typhoid iriatic diathesis seem more disposed it and any great emotional or undue fatigue may bring on an attack in a neuralgic individual Besides the paroxysmal pain of neuralgia there is generally a dull ache all the time of the attack with tender spots along the line bf the i nerve that will be found very to slight pressure with the fingertipNeuralgia may attack any nerve in the body but it perhaps causes its greatest torture when it takes the form known as tic doulourex This is neuralgia in the face along the line of the guides showed us a number of places from where the could be made with a Ii tie exertion Some of us walked over a steep winding trail whitli begins about 500 feet be yond the base of the rock some through a tunnellike crack and others climbed up in the crcvicu ou the side of the rock When we reached the top we another grand sight Below us lay the valley with its fields anti for ests enclosed by chains of high cliffs I cannot describe the beauty of the scene to ytu I wi h I could Words fail me etc etc I shall however attempt to give you a idea of the locution of some of the places which never fail to at tract special attention for all visit ors agree that their distance lends enchantment to the view To the right of Buzzard Ball Yard is the mouth of Crow Hollow which leads up to thu famous Polly Latham Springs Across this hollow and facing Clifty valley stands Horse Shoe Rock a long and mosscover ed bluff protuding far above the high trees growing at its base To the south a break in the cliffs opens up a view of the rolling hills beyond Log Gap To the left among sev Other equally pi eminent cliffs is Garretts Bluff a dangerous from which large masses of rock fall every year or two Immediately back of Buzzard Ball Yard is a hil side leading from the flat surface of the rock up to the general level of the surrounding country Th top of Buzzard Ball Yard is a smooth barren spot somewhat circular and about 50 feet in diame ter This more or less cylindrical roCtTn eS5 2er MfJ Uy s in cliff until some 60 years ago when it suddenly became detached and is now separated from the main bluff by a curved crevice about three feet wideEach member of our party made an estimate of the distance from the the rock to its base James put it at 225 feet Horace Alvin and Penny at 200 Gabe and I at 150 feet This made an aver age of 188 feet But no one would change his estimate up or down this figure We however all agreed that the only way to determine the exact height is to stretch a string down the side of the rock pull it up the string not the rock and meas ure it If any of the readers of TilE RECORD have already carried out this idea I will be glad to hear his results for I have a curiosity to know how much of an overestimate ISO feet is Religious services have taken place on Buzzard Ball Yard On two or three such occasions it is said the preacher stood on the level rock and his listeners were scaled under the trees on the hillside down to his platform Picnic parties frequent this locality every summer and fall Among the names cut into the rock we deciphered Bee Brown famous rock The place it is s i is called Buzzard Ball Yard because buz zirds roost there and can be seen around it from sundown to sli re The number that roost on and near the rock has been v liously fr m several doz n ten thousand f We however did not observe a single one soaring or sit ting We did not have the time to wait until to see how many would return fur the night But we discovered evidence of the fact that they are holding the fort for we found a few roosting places noticed signs of If the name was derived from the fact that buzzards roost and breed on and around this cliff then surely it ought to have been called Buz zards Roost or Buzzards Brood Yard But this cliff has for gener ations gone by the name of Buzzard Ball Yard and tradition gives it no other Yardas ascent in diameter This surface can without indulging in a metaphor be called a yard for any speck of ground three feet or more wide is apt to be thus designated Even a pile of old bones make a hone yard So the vague term yard are very appropriately ap pliedThe question where does the ball come in at naturally suggests itself The buzzard is too sluggish and drowsy to try to dance or take part in a game of ball The when in the nest and still covered with white or yellowish down on be ing approached will hiss like a goose The grown buzzards never produce any sound except by their wings when they start on a flight They do not even buzz The haunts of buzzards are always quiet and above all the young or the old birds never bawl If the fact that buzzards heads are bald entered into the derivation of this name then our pioneers would have called the place the Bald Buzzards Yard But the old settlers were very concise They knew all our buzzards had and that this adjective thus applied would convey nothing specificThere seems to be but one way to account for the word ball It must Shave been originally bald for the top of this rock is not only as flat as a pancake but also as bar ren of grass moss or any other vege tation Thus considering all things it seems quite probable that this place was called The Buzzards Bald Yard by the early settlers Many of our traditions change with the gen erations and this is evidently another instance whJe a seldom printed hut up But whats in a name Romeo would say that what we call Buz zard Ball Yard if called by any other name would still be the same old rock and from it could still be seen the same grand landscape So be its name what it may let us visit the place often for Buzzard Ball Yard is indeed a sight well worth seeing THE IJND MAYOR
