yet only in the tentative stage but when further study and exper ience have brought out all its pos sibilities and have cleared up some of the puzzing problems presents and removed the difficult ies drugs or to antitoxin but the pa tient is as it were his own medi cine factory It is the method by which nature unaided seeks to heal and frequently succeeds Jn the struggle against infection which goes on in the body a large part is taken by the white blood corpuscles and certain other cells the province of which is to attack the bacteria and destroy them If a drop of blood is withdrawn and ex amined under the microscope the white corpuscles will be found with bacteria within them which they are dissolving by a process of digestion in favorable cases the process goes on uninterruptedly and if the bac are not too numerous they are radually destroyed and the patient recovers Sometimes however the white corpuscles refuse to eat up the bac teria They do not seem to find them appetizing and the germs then go on multiplying and pouring out their poison into the blood and the patient is in for a severe and fatal illness The bacteria them selves are appetizing to the white corpuscles but when they are very virulent or in too great numbers the poison they excrete renders them unattractive Now if the unattractive features can be suppressed the white cor puscles will be stimulated to renew ed attack This is brought about by taking some of the bacteria from the patients secretions and cultivat ing them outside the body until a great obtained They are then killed by heat and injected into the patient Being dead they do no harm but the chemical substance whatever it is called at tracts the white corpuscles is still present and active and present in such large amount that it renders appetizing not only the dead bacter ia injected but also the live ones which are doing the harm In certain diseases the bacteria are much alike so that a so called stock vaccine has been prepared by the drug manufacturers But it is found that the bacteria in each have usually certain characteristics peculiar to themselves so that the opsonin prepared from the patients own secretions remarkable of the New York Public Library now slowly nearing cOin pletion will be the huge stack room 90 feet wide 300 feet long and 60 feet in height containing seven tiers of stacks The metal work of the stacks alone weighs about 3000 tons and recently in estimating for the contract it was found that merely to pass once through the multitudious nests of stacks it would be necessary to cover seven miles of distance Until a few years ago all public coal lands were valued uniformly at rate of 20 an acre ac cording if they lie less or more than 15 miles from a railroad Since July 1906 the government has been appraising its coal land according to the value fixed for the government coal land based on the new is 1491772443 the value fixed for these same coal lands be fore the new classification was adopted was 48240971 to these figures it is evident therefore that if these lands had been sold at the prices prevailing before July 1906 they would have brought the government Taylor and I took to some of the Cliffs of Clify That chat was dm fined to Saltpeter Cave Wild Hollow and other their immediate vlihilty Reccitly a i party isited Buzzard Ball Yard wlLh is one the great bluffs overlooking the same Cljfty creek and vaVy but located some two miles below Wild Cat Hollow Buzzard Ball Yard is in northern j Todd county four miles from the Muhlenberg line and a few miles in a northerly direction from the town j of Clifty or Lickskillet as it is sometimes called I presume no locality in Todd Muhlenberg is talked about and at the same time visited less than this grand clift It is a place to which nearly and woman in southern Muhlcnberg has at one time or other planned to go but to which few have ever gone Only those who have been there re alize what wonderful scenery we have at our very doors The pea pie who have once seen the view from the top of Buzzard Hall Yard ilwjiys g there again or at least earnestly desire to do no Like nearly all others who have Deco to the puce 1 too been destine to pHn and talk for years bout going before I actually went At b t my chance carne fui consisted of Henry Mitchell better known as Penny Ah in Gabriel Aiders arch inv self all from Jnylots Hill We drove to Cull where we were joined by James A and Horace Groves vno live in that town and who were our hosts and guides From Clifty we continued our drive to Log clap which is one of the few trails in the neighborhood leading from the level of the country down int j the narrow valley of Clifty Creek Tying our horses to some trees near the west rim of the canon and not far from the head of this old trail we descended the rocky path and then proceeded down the cliff bound valley to Buzzard Ball Yard On the west side of the big the narrow trail or bridle path winds down to the foot of the cliff where the valley is about 200 yards wide The opposite or cast end the trail was widened years ago and made a wagon way Many logs have been hauled over that part of Log Gnp but it is now used prin cipally by the farmers who raise crops in the bottom The name Log Gap is derived from the fact that about half way up this narrow road a fill in of logs was placed in a hillside gully in order that this dangerous place could be crossed more easily Peo pIe wishing to enter the valley with a wagon and team may do so at the east end they must go afoot or horseback over the narrower part of the trail This western rower part is frequently called the Sam Gap in honor of Sam McGehee The Log Gap was much traveled in olden times especially by the men on the cast side who had their grinding done in Bivinsville now the town of Clifty The west end of this passage is at present almost abandoned and is becoming unsafe Some twelve years ago W T Kirkman better known as Old Squire Tal was leading his horse up this ball when in turning a curve the animal slipped and fell off a precipice 75 feet high The Old Squire so the story is told back down the path for the sole purpose of removing his saddle and bridle and toting then home for he had every reason to believe the nag was a goner Hut when he reached the bottom of the elm great was his surprise to find his horse standing on all fours and not a hair missing Both man and horse quietly resumed their march up the path as though nothing un usual had happened and landed safely at the end of the trail as they had done many a time before and as they have often done since In the valley not far from this narrow trail and near the Old Sam or Gum Spring Is Booger Rock It is one of the so called rock houses that is I I i Tim BOTTOM sembling n house about as touch as u brickbat does a quart bottle Booger Rock is a triangular mass some 40 feet high which evidently I fell front one of the cliffs ages ago and then rolled to where it ion stands wear the creek cued about one hundred from the bluff To us it looked as lonely as a coun try church on a week day Many people declare that altho this rock seems dead during the day a pe culiar noise can often be heart around it at night The only signs of bongers we saw were a few coon and possum tracks Had we wandered past this haunted place about midnight while a screech owl was perched on Its top we too might have something to tell about the hants that hant Booger Rock A little further down the valley is Dripping Rock another rock house It is a somewhat cylindrical mass of sandstone 60 feet high and about the same width Its strata arc tilted or inclined At rn angle of about 45 degrees and its base is pressed against the foot of u high cliff While we were walking toward Dripping Rock our guides in formed us that tradition says water has been dripping from its sods ev er since Moses smote the rock Iud that ulien they SAW it last a few years alto It was still doing so We expected in find water trickling from it like sip irrin a tapped sugar tree in early spring But we were disappointed After listening and looking around the rock for about ten minutes AC were forced to the conclusion that Dripping Rock is now as dry as a powder horn discovered several small circular holes around its base which erv edidently funned some time ago by trickling streams but we found no fresh marks to indicate any dripping We therefore inferred that this rock hail gone dry about the same time Todd county went James and Horace told us that further up the hollow were other rocks well known on account of their dripping qualities and were called Sweating Stones Thy had passed some of these only a few before and noticed that the stones were still sweating big crossed a bridge built over Clifty Creek peeped into a cabin and also found what seemed to be the remains of a fox hunters camp In the meantime we saw not only high clifls to the right and high to the left but since the valley is a winding one we saw high cliffs all around us Each seemed grander than the other until at last we be held the famous Buzzard Ball Yard the grandest of them all This Gibraltar is indeed an inspir ing sight Our first view of it was from near the banks of Clifl y Creek Buzzard Ball Yard is El Capitan of this valley ihe Yoscmiic of western Kentucky Ii stands out boldly nod majestically from one of the chains of bluffs that help form the deep rockwalled valley The exposed base of the precipice is not on level with tic creek but rests on t pedestal or hill some
