IIIItrt1 ft f f fes eoo o Now after it was ascertained thi the Dcmoskitcs had received a ma jority of the lots that were cast in the various synagogues and thereby had gained control of the province of Munic the Repusite chief priests and those that had sought lots with their friends gathered together in one of the judgment hulls of the temple to commune with one another over their misfortune and calamity that hail so unexpectedly befallen them to commune about the mys serious result of the casting of lots it was a remarkable occurrcuce in the history of the province and a great surprise uud astounding not only to the Repusites but also to the Demoskites and even unto Pilate and his colleagues in the conspiracy Now after they had all assembled together Paul stood up in their midst and beckoned unto them and said Men and Brethren I know of a truth that you are all aggrieved on account of so great a calamity that has come unexpected upon us and that our control of the province a season has ended and our and anticipations for further rule over the province have fled like a dream of fancy and hath vanished as a fleeting vision NOW brethren the confidence which we had in our tribe religion and righteousness proved to be a broken reed upon which we thoughtlessly and care lessly attempted to lean and fell Brethren this dramatic occurence and remarkable incident of our lives is not necessarily original or miraculous nor did it take place by mere chance or casualty but it up in the course of human events and there a cause or combination of leading to the mysterious result and no doubt there will be different opinions en tertained as to the real cause or causes andrthere for issue and to the main promptings Now brethren we can not charge our misfortune if it be a misfortune wholly to the unfaithfulness of our tribe or to the great cunningness of the Demos kites but we who sought lots of the people together with our chief priests and council owe a great part of the debt of defeat and some extent for the Hence the three causes combined negligence upon our part of our tribe the cunningness of the Demoskites effected the catastrophe Brethren we were like unto a ship launched out to sea without compass rudder or sail and when the winds blew and the storm came it was drifted and dashed upon an unseen rock and split asunder wrecked and lost We were as a general with ao un disciplined army facing one that was well disciplined and he would go into camp without pickets or guards and would allow the spies of the enemy to go through hit camp and make friends with his soldiers and induce them to desert and into the ranks of the enemy when the battle was fought his own soldiers would help to put him to defeat and flight We were also like unto a pleasure party who would embark upon a seemingly stream embowered upon either side with fragrant flowers and go drifting quietly and gently down upon bossom of the soft blue rippling regaling in the sweet odors and balmy zephyr breezes that soft uppn their brows having pilot young and inexperienced in voyage anti careless of his duly to look out for danger but all the were Cull of hope and bright ations of a joyous and hppy yqy age thoughtless of the fearful aflt jo which they were merrily drift apd pKgr which they were plunged by the gushjng lashing foaming waters wrecjced apd We were like unto a pgreess would leave the dents of sheep fpld open at night and lay down to rest and wolves t would come in and carry oft his sheep Brethren while we stood watching the brightness of the stars and the wonders of the heavenly bodies an tlcipating a glorious dawn of bright day the Demoskites dug a deep pit in our pathway into we unfortunately stumbled and fell I U for hopes nayrb ground as our occurrence the unfaithfullness O plat ofwaters life W antic p jog p herdwho r J i i e v r for came was causes conjecture tot g an- is this erh cats jug she which t t r E r tact when day came we found our strives beneath the surface and in the dark NUN brethren it was our overconfidence in our tribe and in ourselves that paralyzed our strength and helped bring about our defeat We suffered the Demoskites to set their snares and nets for us as a fuwler and we were caught like quail and we were careless about the condition and disposition of our tribe We took no pains to inquire about their grivances nor did we attempt to pacify or console the same we were unconcerned about the movements of the Demoskites we were indifferent about the ad vice and warnings of the old loyal Repusites who had grown old in the experience of tribe religion and who assisted in gaining the control of the province from the Demos kites when we were mere lads we regarded them as back numbers and their advice as being out of date we consulted with the oung the unexperienced and the imaginative we relied principally upon our own sagacity and discernment we took our chances in our own hands and directed our own destiny we were inclined to be wise in our own and all the charges that the Demoskites preferred against us we were inclined to believe that every body would consider them false without reputation and that they would be ineffective we were in dined to think that the people ought to feel and consider matters as we did and that what we s id ought to be popsidercd true by everybody that what we did ought to be right by the people Now this was a great oversight and mis take upon our part we put off ac tion until it was too late and until a short time before the casting of lots and after the Demoskis had and schemes vy then dashed out into the province gave a few blasts from our trumpets went about over he province scattering a few shekels recklessly about at the last pinch therefore it greatly to our fault that we were stripped of our official regalia NOW brethren we Relieve that our experience in this matter will prove to be a great advantage to us in the future ad ventures of our lives and a volume pf knowledge in years to come This occurrence gives us a good idea and knowledge of the frailty of human nature such prepares and qualifies us to meet and to deal with our fellow man with some degree safety and certainty in the various issues of life the experience which we have just taken is worth more to than the proceeds and emolu meets of the official position which we must surrender to others We are all young and have but little ex perience in tribe religion but the experience which we have just gone through will put an edge upon the sward pf life for experimental and practical life 15 a much safer stand by than a theoretical or imaginative I believe that our late ex perience has made an indelible im prugsfpn upon the tablets of our memory which shall ever glow in continued brightness thro all the years of our lives Brethren let U remember that a little adversity becoBietil an antidote tp vanity and a little misfortune begpmeth 3n in centive for caution lrethrR dP yourselves no harm for the world is wide and opportunities are many and remember the race is not to the swift nor the victory to the strong but to those that pcrsevereth Now brethren let me show you the mys tery or b old we did not all steadfast as was first anticip ajetj some of us were put to a very scycre and thereby Jost our official dignity 3nrf flPfx lhose remained that were not subject tfl jhe discrimination of lots Now prevvjuy tp c change which we have tallied we were a persuaded that neither per apgeis npr principalities npr powers ppf present our things to cpulfj separate us from our tribes love and loyalty therefore we lid boast in vain hope not knowing the dis sention and the unfaithfulness that was lurking in the membership of the Repusites for we then a glass darkly and there some j conceit considered s rJai their and promiscuously was o us lone J I Jit X l remain for est n icier blip6 name saw thr cysts t0 Y- f o mysteries which we were unable to interpret but after the costing of lots the scales of our vain imagin ations fell from our eyes now no longer see thro a glass dark ly but see as we ate seen and re alize that our earnest expectations did not culminate in our official sal vation and that we were not re ceived by the effectual calling made by the casting of lots for before the casting of lots the Demoskites made us a subject of vanity and of ruth less criticism they reviled us with backbitting and all manner of calumny and false charges They sent spits about among our people up jealousy and envy against us and we were bought with a price our birthright was put upon the market and gambled away we were weighed in false balances and set at nought we were betrayed into the hands of the Demoskites and innocently and unjustly cruci lied upon a cross of treachery for it was by the efficacy of the atone ment that was manifested by and thro the casting of lots that we are what we arc therefore seeing that we were sur rounded and with so reat a cloud of witnesses and the abundance of lots that were cast contrarywise we were made the subjects of wrath and how could we escape so great a calamity for by not receiving the free gift of the abundance of lots we were transformed into the likeness of common citizenship and passed from a public to a private life and be came heits of civility Therefore by the foreordInation that was de termined and executed by and the casting of lots our rights to the official control of the province were made void and we were alienated and ostracised from the participation in the feast of the official passover therefore we are the subjects of commonality accord ing to the covenant of the people which was made in the casting of lots hence we are no longer uncer the bonds of official duty but have been made free and set at liberty and having put on the habilaments of common citizenship we can run now without weights or encumbrance and be att peace with the Demos kites I would not that ye should be how that our fathers many years ago were for a long time un der the same cloud that now over shadows us they did groan under the burden of the rule and iniquities of the Demoikltef but they pa tiently bore the toll and endured the pain and continued in the faith and righteousness of our tribe and abounding in good works whceby they fought a good fight and gained the control of the
