the county court took place in the John Dennis house on Tuesday June 25 1799 The record covers about three times s pages us the first nnd is signed by John Dennis Charles Wing was appointed county clerk during good behavior Ev idently his behavior was considered good and his books well kept for he held his oflie 56 years i James Weir wus appointed to com i pile a list of the taxable property in i the county The following oaths were administered Robert Cisna and Richard Morton Justice of the Peace Wm Bradford Deputy Slier iff John Culbertson Coroner Peter Boggcss and Thomas Morton con stablesSixteen men had their stock marks recorded Six roads were consider ed and for each a committee was appointed to view and mark the best and most convenient way A number x of bargains and sales were recorded Ferries were estab lished at Smiths Landing and Lewis berg on Green river John Dennis was granted license to keep a tavern at his house Tavern rates and ferry charges were fixed Among such items are Dinner i shilling 6 pence breakfast or supper j shil ling whisky per half pint 9 pence 3 corn per gallon 6 pence stableage s4 hours 4 pence ferry for P Xj pence for a single man 44 l Tuesday August 27 1799 in the house of John Dennia The minutes were Signed James Craig proceedings are similar to the earlier meetings with the additional feature the filing of several applications On page 29 the record reads persons appointed for the pur pose of exhibiting into court a plan building the public building hich being examined and approved JpfJS ordered to be recorded A rapworandura of the dimensions of itbe house of Muhlenberg to be built of hewn Ions the face or more 6 feet by 18 high a joint shingle roof with pegs except the outside rows with nails a joint plank floor and loft with good stairdase the lower story 12 feet high with one door and three windows a par tltion upstairs a window in each roqm and shutters to each window and a door a judges bench barred around an place on November 26th and 27111 1799 The following is quoted from the proceedings of November 26 1799 page 49 Here the word Ircenvillc makes its first appearance on the court records Ou the motion of William Campbell and it appearing to the court that it will be advant ageous to the public and it also thin legal notice having been given to Lw it is ordered that a town be established his land at the scat of justice in this county on Caney including thirty acres of land to be called and known by the name of Greenville whereupon the said William together with John Bradley and Charles lox Wing his securities entered into and acknowledged their bond in the penalty of 500 pounds conditioned as the law directs It is further ordered that the said town be vested in Samuel Russell Alney McLean Henry Rhoads Charles Fox Wing William Bradford and John Dennis who are hereby nom inated and appointed trusties of the said town of Greenville agreeably to law The fifth meeting ends with the statement that it is Ordcre that the next court be held at the town of Greenville the seat of justice of this county The sixth begins as follows At a county court held fur Muhlenberg county at the file Russell house The eighth meeting was the first held in the new log temple of justice Its record is headed a county court held tor Muhlenberg county at the court house on Tuesday the 25th day of February 1800 The new building nltho occupied hill evidently not been completed for the record of April 22 iSoo shows that the po5ti n of the como missioners who were appointed to the building of the court house of this comity ordered that leave be given this undertakers until the first day of August to complete the sameThe twelfth meeting is dated Tues day Sept 23 1800 court re ceived the court house of the as being done agreeably to their bond and it is ordered that the bond entered into t y the said un dertakers be destroyed On the same date A plan of the town of Greenville was exhibited into court and ordered to be re corded The plan is on page 75 of copied Jced Book No i The surveying was done by Aluey McLean He divided Wm Camp bells donation of 30 acres into 56 lots all of which lay in the vicinity of the two acre public square The proceeds from the sale of these lots was used to help defray the expense of building the new court house The map shows the as being located at the southeast corner of streets designated as Main street and Main Cross street Running pa rallel with Main street are McLean and Water alleys and and Bradford alleys Parallel with Main Cross street are Campbell and Wood alleys and Thompkins and alleys Adjoining the 30 acre plot is another map designating ten lots of five acres each From one of these lots two acres are cut off fora grave yard and
