forces of the body arc able to maintain at a ron stant figure almost entirely without regard to the temperature of the surrounding atmosphere Any ele vation ot the i above ninetyeight and degrees or ninetynine degrees is called fever and is an indication of something wrong So also is a fall of the temperature below the natural point but this is a rarer condition than fever and is due usually to special causes which u is not necess to consider here Since fever is the most cviucnt of a number of different v diseases and the one that gives character as it were to many acute infectious diseases it has come tu be nynonomous with disease itself and it is common to speak of some one being sick of a lever Hut foyer H 50 far from being the disease that it is often the curative and conditionMany such as pnedV monia and typhoid fever would bV more often fate If it were not for the high body temperature that characterizes them In pneumonia for example it has been noted thin the higher the temperature under certain limits of course tfce more favorable the the die case It is therefore not a thlojl to give remedies to reduce tfcv r unless the elevation of tfurc has continued a very long time so high over one hundred and four degrees as to threaten in it self the normal performance of the vital functicns Sometime of course the fever may of controlc fr m life This is best done by means of pool water in the form of a tub bath The patient should be put into bath at eighty degrees or ninety degrees the water being then grade ally reduced to about seventy de grees or he may be wrapped iii n sheet wet with cold water or spong cd with cold water Water is a safe and better fever remedy than the socalled antipyre tic drugs the use of which i bad for the already weakened heart This cool water treatment should always be supplemented by the freest possible use of fresh air even in very cold weather The old fashioned belief that a person with a fever is going to take cold easily has no foundation whatever Rural Telephones Mr Farmer Make your home as modern for your family as a city and place yourself in a position to get the latest market quotations at any time This can be well to do Those who arc not stirred by the pnth s of young lives ex posed to enfeebling cinUitijiis which invite wasting disease may nppre cite the argument supplied by the constant mcace of tuberculosis In these circumstances the report of Chicagos first outdoor haul Juki Issued by the Chc gi Tuberculosis institute has interest fur nil Fur one month last summer be ginning AHJ 31 school for thirty feeble children was held on the of the Harvard school at 75th street and Vincennes road The board of education and the Chicago TMbsrcMlQsisinstitutc in cooperation conducted this ex periment The report says Of the thirty children chosen for the cxperimetii seventeen were first stage cases of tuber culosis two had tubercular Rlnr ds and ejtrr H were pronounced bercular Sixiurn been ten were still directly exposed tubcrtulosis in their homes While in the case of the other fourteen there was no evidence of direct ex posureThe agss of the thirty ranged from 0 to 13 years None of them we arc told had been regular in at tendance at school during the pre ceding year on account of sickness several having been absent for months at a time What wonder therefore that they were backward in their studies They came from eighteen different homes Consider for a moment their home surround ings The families averaged seven children living in four rooms Only three of the children slept alone Fourteen of the families paid not over JJio a month rent In only nine of the families was the income over i2 a week in all the others it ranged from 3 upward Eight of the families had been or were then receiving aid These then were the children who went to school in 1 tent for one to revel in air and sunshine and to sleep in the open air Here arc the results of the month of healthgiving treatment The total gain in weight for the thirty children was 113 pounds the range being from one to seven pounds Twentytwo gained three pounds or more each while the average Rain was 38 pounds As has already been stated two thirds of the children showed a tempera lure ranging from 99 to on admission On discharge only two showed a temperature above 99 while the rest were practically nor mat The general condition of all was unproved Now they have went back to their homes The school is over But what if it had been a permanent school What if the city had enough schools of this sort to give proper instruction proper food and proper medical care to all the ailing children who need these benefits The time must come when the city will provide sufficient outdoor schools to fight tuberculosis
