fecTOBER 28 1909 1 JBv 50c PER YEAR IN ADVANCEGREENVILLE t Melancholy Alabama Days There is no drier place in the universe than Alabama unless it be Deaths valley in Arizona or the middle of the Sahara desert Pro hibition has removed the last trace ot dampness We use the term dryness ot course in a bibulous sense and with reference to spiritu liquors There is water water everywhere and nothing else to drink and as AlabamiShs are not socially fond of water its melan choly days have como It is doubtful if the Alabama solons were aware of the ultimate results Of the Fullerlicke bill as they call it when they passed it with such exultant unanimity primary purpose was to keep the negros sober hoping to reduce the volume of crimes by them but in doing this they clamped the lid down so tight that they have kept the whites sober also by making it impossible for them to get liquor it being a crime against the peace and dignity of the state of Alabama to buy it sell it own itbring it into the state it lend it or drink at jey did not realize the full mpQrt of the law but a resent de cision of one of the most eminent law authorities in the stale has made it clear and brought consternation into every household The Alabama housewife has that shcxannot make black berry cordial ami put it by even for an emergency without subject ing herself to a heavy penalty And right now in the scuppernong wine season there can be making of scuppernong under penalty of heavy fine Cane beer tabooed The planter who shall set his skimmings to be fermented on his premises Copt hop or dandelion will find languishing jaiL a mint bed as they pass by Truly the Melancholy days have come for Alabama But there are other states for those who can and meanwhile the solons will have to devise some new means which may at least allow the whites their scuppernong wine arid cane beer while they are keeping negroes sober Muscular Rheumatism Many physicians think that the soreness and aching in the muscles which are usually called muscular rheumatism are really not rhunla tism at all but neuralgia For this they prefer to call the by its other name myalgia which means nothing more than muscular pain It probably belongs nevertheless to the indefinite group of diseases called rheumatic for it occurs frequently in persons who have other rheumatic of gouty trouble or in whose family these affections prevail and it is excited by the same to damp for example over fatigue indiscretions In eating or drinking that are believed to bring on an of rheumatism in the jointsAny or all the muscles may be the seats of myalgia but those commonly affected are muscles of the neck of the shoulder and ot the loins In children it often takes the form of stiff neck while persons of middle life the muscles of the loins are not infrequently attacked constituting what is known and dreaded by those who have had previous attacks as lumbago When the chest are at the sufferer has a stitch in the side pleurodynia the pain may be so acute as to simulate pneu monia or pleurisy The chief symptom of muscular rheumatism is pain in the muscles affected not usually very severe when the parts are at rest but some excruciating on attempted motion A light touch may be painful while deep and firm pressure gives relief The acute attack usually begins suddenly and the pain attains its full at tKe beginning grow ing gradually less in the course of or three days or a week In the chronic form there is al most always some soreness and ach r J r i us I I 1 t Their It I t f t e t r rt n- should write to Dr Pierce and receive free the advice of a physiciuu of over 10 years experience a skilled and successful specialist in the diseases Every letter of this sort has the most careful consideration sad ij regarded as sacredly confidential Many sensitively modest women write fully to Dr Pierce what they would shrink from telling to their local physician The local physician is pretty sure to say that he cannot do anything without an examination Dr Pierce holds that these distasteful examinations generally need ofwomen arc ing in the affected in raw The internal treatment is the same as for rheumatism of the joints which is another argument in favor of the belief that the two forms are essentially the same and due to the same cause The pain may be relieved by dry oldfashioned treatment of lumbago by ironingthe back is good although a hotwater bag or a hot brick will do just as well without the disturbance that the the iron causes i Perfect rest is essential and this may and with singing and nraypf been spending the last jjayj in joyous anticipation of the ponsummation of all things It reported that there are 300 in the expectant company Their is that the top crust of thecarth uuhurr amidst the of the weeks of matter and the crush of worlds will be the elect to begin a new regime It is curious how such ideas pre sst despite the illustrations of lighted hope with which history abounds and with which the story of the United States is richly colored The men who were sure that the end would come with the year iooo have had many imitators in the times when the light ot learning has shone far more brightly The vciples of William Milles who donned their ascension robes and sat all nighi on housetops in 1843 gave up their goods in their certain ty of the end Many of them were forced to seek news places of re sidence to avoid the teasing of their neighbors and begin life anew when morning came and the routine of earth was unaffected Hindley confessed in 1873 that his doggerel attributed to the Mother Thlpton was a hoax but there were a good many people who had a notion that she might have had a vision when she declared The end of the world shall come eighteen hundred and elghtyonc So there have been many who translated the visions of Daniel arid the apocalyptic revelation of St John into terms of days and years proclaming the end and fixing the exact time They ill have been disappointed when their prophecies have failed But there is no for thinking that others as years pass by will not repeat the story of religious enthusiasm of accepted waiting and of grieved disillusionment Such things to appeal to human nature under spell of a cranky leader Judge Pace and W O Belch er answer the question asked on third page of this paper it People slipping away from them and will resort to any kind of tactics to win the election One of the tricks they may attempt to play is the substi tution of the invisible irk pad in place of the one furnished by the clerk This if done will be done in the strong Republican Pcrirod Rosewood or Bremen The ink on the pad substituted will show at first but later and before the vote is counted will fade out and leave the ballot a blank The voter will carry the real pad out ot the booth and give it to the next Democrat who will use it The Republicans will be voting with the one furnished by the Democrats and will be voting blank ballots The Republican officers of the election in each precinct should mark the ink pad and examine it several times during the day to see if it is the same one they furnished Republican election officers should look out for the stencil on the finger of the Democrats while the vote is being counted They can mark a ballut and have it thrown out as mutilated or marked The Republican officers at each precinct should be on the alert for any and all tricks attemptci by the Democrats They realize they win by fair means and will to any kind of trick to carry it Eternal vigilance on the part of those conducting the election and a fair count will result in a victory for the Republican ticket frost the top to the bottom Republican clccttoa oKccrs should material as his patriotism and veracity Living at Beech Creek there is a widow bearing the name of Mrs Simms who is the mother of three Democratic voters whose suffrage Mr Roll will never get The reason that they are against Mr Roll is this Some twelve or fifteen years ago the Simms family came from the state of Ohio and located in this county Mr Simms brought with him a herd of cattle anti It seems that these cattle constituted the bulk of his possessions Soon they reached the county family differences arose and a seperation took place between Mr Simms and his wife The husband traded this bunch of cattle and some hogs valued at 30000 to Curg Roll for a little piece of land as a home for his wife and children after this Simms listed the land o J W Stewart then County Assessor and immediately left the county The widow was left in the most destitute circumstances with a housq full of small children without shelter or means of support Roll got cattle and has never made family a dped tp the land or them in paseesaion of it nor ac cqqnted for the purchase price of the cattle Mrs Simms struggled on and by the help of her neighbors managed to keep her family together until the boys were large enough to work The family is now prosper the matter up see Roll failed to account for these cattle or to give their mother a home on this land This story is grven jest as told by this family It can be investigated by any voter why cares to visit them in their home at Beech Greek Pace vvon after Rico last Monday for the slander which he was putting in circulation serf calling his of The Record Greenville Ky lover ADVKUTISEMBNT Republicans Owe it to Their Party to Help Down the Court House Ring In a last desperate effort to stem the rising tide of wrath and that will overwhelm them on the 2nd day of November the Court House ring is attempting to arouse party prejudice by telling that Curg Roll is such a Democrat that if elected sheriff of the county he will not permit a Republican to hold office in the county for the next twenty years With what powerful conjurations or by what mighty magic Mr Roll will accomplish this wonderful feat they fail to state but the Ringsters arc trying to make the tax paying whose support they know they cannot get upon their official record believe that Mr Ron will when elected sheriff take the party by the nape of the neck and the scat of the pants and throw t so far that it will take it twenty years to find its way back Now in the first place Mr Roll is an honorable high toned who would as much scorn to Uge his office for partisan purposes as he would to be guilty of grafting But could Mr Roll even if he so desired use the Sheriffs office to injure the Republican party Under the present eleption law the sheriff has nothing to do with elections cept as a member ot the County Board of Election Commissioners This County Board is Republican one Democrat the Sheriff of the cotjnty The only duties of the xBoard are Jo appoint election officers and canvass the rer turns from the different precincts The Board has no judicial functions its duties arc purely ministerial and arc clearly defined by law JJHie Board has no discretion about the discharge ot its duties and should at any time refuse to discharge any of its duties and should it at refuse to discharge any of its duties or undertake to discharge them in an illegal manner the Board and easily be map damused in the Circuit Court and be compelled to discharge its duties according to law In the appoint meat of election officers jfaifij2iuili8ti divide the election officers equally between the two political parties The only other duty of the County Board of Election Commissioners is to canvass the returns In this the duties of tic Boatel arc purely clerical It cannot determine the legality or illegality of any vote nor the regularity not the irregularity of any election can it decide any or say vho is or who is not elected to any office all it can do in this respect is to count the ballots that are returned from the different precincts and if it should do even this in any way different what the law requires the courts would by mandamus compel the Board to reassemble and its duties as the law directs There is absolutely no foundation whatever for the statement that Mr Rojls election would injure the party but upon Ihe other hand we think it can be clearly shown that his election would ultimately help the Republican party The Court House Ring now in control of the Republican party in the county is doing more to hurt that party than all of its open enemies The Court House Ring for several years has Used the Republican organization to exploit themselves and feather their own nests and not to promote the of the Republican party and as a result Republican majorities in the county have gradually dwindled from eight hundred anti over to al most nothing and four years more of Ring Rule is bound to result in the total wreck of the Republican party in the county The Repub lican is a great organization and when properly managed is al most invincible but no party can survive long when its organization is controlled by such men as now have control in this county The election of the ticket will destroy this break their hold upon the Repub lican organization When that is done the party can and will reorgan ize and four years from now the rank and file of the party will get together and nominate a ticket made up of honest and Republicans and such ticket can easily win But if the Ring is again placed in pow er it will strengthen hold upon the party confirm them in their leadership and they will continue j indignation Republicans partisan Republicans Republican gentleman e composedof and It anytime couldreadily 9aw offers unusual opporta attics for the production 3 market hogs While there arc some drawbacks tbo most serious one which Is swine sickness can be extra hated to ti trtmt extent by proper sanitation and management And right bore there Is no saffr rule to follow than Use preventive measures In stead of curative ones The hog Is an animal which positively will not re SPend to treatment nod especially Is this true when compared with othor kinds of live stock Entire droves of hogs have been taken off by disease when other men nearby used preven thc measures and survived too plague This was not simply luk it was a question of proper feeding care rind manasemcnt Ceraln feeds for example have a tendency to wcnkon n hog constituaonally and thus ho Is loss able to ward off disease A hog fed continually on corn grows n smll wenk bone soft and gabby muscles nnd does not obtain his full size This possible may be a breeding animal and as n result the weakness is rd down to the offspring and often times the fault Is there multiplied As a result of this the animal IB not Oble to take proper exercise or rustlo for himself This possibly may bran on disease At any rate exercise Is too often not given Us full value This Is especially true In case of breedns animals and of young and proini pigs It Is one valuable measure to used In preventing disease In the feed care and management of awne there are certain funda mental principles which hold true no matter what our condtion may b3 In the first place we must puvide ourselves with strong vigorous ani mall to start with ether grdle or pure bred always giving the host success Then we must proMd fates which contain the proper mater for building up the arloiu yarn of jlu body nnd not only this but we ra nt know at what age those certain kind of feed must bo given These tO things are all Important and it will depend to n decided extent upon ahem whether n man actually tnnlccs a profit fro t raising boss Another important question Iff that qf care end ment which has to things as rpswafltpj held plentiful supplies of gocd pure water 1C the above things arc care fully attended to at the rrh time there is BO why every man HO doing cart not make swine rats profitable In the actual brcJIns rastng and marketing of hogs It Iz a settled ques tion that it IB most profitable to a hog pasture of some descrip The pasture Is especially Valu able In growing the pigs from birth until the fattening period arrives we are thus not only providing groan feeds which aid In digesting other foods but at the same time we are laving the young pigs plenty of ciao to make sirens bone nod at the same time using a valuable measure In wardln oft disease Contrast these conditions with ten cr twelve brood sows and their housed In small filthy Ill vend hated places la It any wonder that they contract diseases and spread It through the nelghbordood This Is n Juftt criticism and even today In some qf the prominent swine producing tlon this nettled Qf management la used It la gradually being replaced however by modern methods of swine growing I i t true that under southern con ditions ro lave Individual problems tq work ont Such things as breeds and management are all vital in te hurts of the swine grower There Is certainly a Bright future for the i reduction of the hog and one reason of this Is because protein or muscle producing feeds ere so easily and economically grown Here Is where we have a decided advantage over the Corn Bflt producers The principle crops there are corn nnd Corn U the finishing feed for hogs but net toed for producing growth Too many times It Is corn from birth to maturity The result Is small wenk animal decreased In size nnd constitution Hemember tho first thing to do Is to grow a frame
