every year just as the law directs giving each and every claim allowed to whom allow ed the amount and for what pur pose The thing that hurts the Argus is that it did not get to pub lish the statements The statements that have been published in TilE RECORD arc correct in every parti cular These statements give a re capitulation showing the countys financial condition the itemized statement having been published does not require a second publica tion The 1800 claims referred to have been published giving every item The pages where the orders are recorded arc given in the state ment and the claims arc filed with the statements If there is any thing wrong with the statement or the claims will not some of the re form candidates examine them and specify what it is The Argus might send some one to examine and point out the great wrongs complained of Why not specify and not be so general in your accusations The financial condition is the best ever known In 1897 the debt was near one million dollars with the county listing two million of dollars worth of taxable property This debt was a lien upon all the property ot the county If a man farm worth one thousand dollars the bond holders had a lien upon his property for five hundred dollars or fifty per cent of its value That debt has all been settled all been paid the interest has been paid to date The present debt is 190000 There is in the hands of the receiver 20000 and owing from the county fund so there is a debt on 190000 less 40000 which amounts to 150000 This is three per cent of five millions which is the present tion of Muhlenberg county and the farmer who owns the farm after twelve years of republican rule in the county finds the hen reduced from 500 to 30 or from 50 per cent to three per cent treasurer This is another attempt to mislead and deceive some one The claims presented were payable out of the levy of 1909 and the had no right to pay them out of this fund This fact was well known to the party presenting the claims and the claims were presented for the purpose of manufacturing cam paign thunder It was all planned by the Re tormetl committee The voters are not so ignorant as to be caught by so flimsy an attempt as that The claims that we presented were payable out of the levy of 1909 and the treasurer had no right to pay of funds derived from for mer levies Why will not the Argus tell the truth Force of habit is hard to overcome We now chal lenge the Reform candidates to show any thing wrong with the fi nancial condition of the county or to show any inaccuries in the state ments that have been made in TilE time show up or up A Statement of Facts Notwithstanding the fact that the Fiscal Court has published a list of each and every claim that has been allowed after each of its semiannual session as the law the Argus with its characteristic audacity con tinues to ask why this thing has not been done The Argus evidently has a number of editors and it does seem to us that in the aggregation there ought to be one of them who knows enough about the countys af fairs to know that the law has been strictly complied with in the respect It may be that these gentlemen arc so very choice as to their readirg matter that all the information which they have is obtained through the columns of the Argus If this is so it would account for their ig in the matter aSsS aFiscal lish its proceedings through the col umns of this delightful journal r One reason is because it has a bet ter medium in the Greenville RE CORD and the Central City Republi can and the other reason is because the Argus has never failed to hold the county up for every penny it could whenever the court has used its columns to publish any of its proceedings The records of the Clerks office
