prone to scoff at the progress in medical science They admit that the average span of life has been lengthened and the fearful infant mortality of the last and previous centuries materially reduced but this they say is the re suIt of the improvement in hygiene effected as much by sanitary engin eers and sociologists as by medical investigatorsThey up against medicine the tact admitted by all that cancer is on the increase forgetting that may be due in part to the saving of life in the early the result of which is that more live to reach the cancer age Cancer is a disease of middle or advanced life and if more people live to the time when they arc liable to suffer from cancer it is evident that more will suffer from the disease Medical science has discovered the cause or the mode of propaga tion of malaria and yellow fever and has freed or made it possible to free the tropical regions of the world from these terrible scourges It has discovered a remedy which has rpbb jl diphthcna bvmpst of spinal meningitis from eighty to twenty five per cent and promises to reduce it even further and to do away with the terrible sequels of the disease which formerly made recover almost worse than death It has not yet conqurcd tuberculosis but it is in a fair way to do so and what is more it is teaching the public how to avoid the disease Ithas not yet solved the problem of cancer That it will do so is not doubted by those infor med of the strenuous efforts being made in every country by earnest and trained investigators All over the world institutions have been es tablished for cancer research One of this sort has existed in Buffalo New York for over ten years the disease is being studied by a com mission in Massachusetts by others in England there arc also institutes for the study of cancer in Berlin Frankfort and Heidelberg in Ger many and an international society ha been established and meets reg ularly for the comparing of results The results thus far from the point of view of the laymen have not been great but although no cure has been found a great deal has been learned about the nature of cancer The cause of it has not yet been systematically prosecuted for only a decade and despite the pau city of results the outlook is Twenty years ago a man prophe sied the freeing of Havana from fever Would have been laughed at Ten years invited to be the orators of the occasion and to dis cuss the principles of Socialism A large crowd was gathered on the ground beneath a beautiful shade of clustered oaks We shall not be able to give a full detail of their discours QS but only a short synopsis After dinner had bced served and the poo ers1 stand on comfortable scales that had been prepared for the occas fan Mr Hickman arose to the crowd by Judge Poag and he spoke for one hour and three quarters and said in part Ladies and Gentlemen I am before you today according to prom ice and for the purpose of discussing and questions which we deem to be of vital tancc and questions that should be understood economic questions that concern us all Now I want to say in the commencement of my re marks and the presentation of a fev ihaughts that I am not here to abuse any person or persons or to specially denounce the principles policies ideas and persuasion of any organized people but my sole object shall be to drive truth and t3 reason with you concerning such matters and if the truth cnti ages any of my hearers am not responsible for it Now I want to say in way of prefactory remarks that there arc too many organize lions orders and confederations and too many political par tic being fostered in our country for its wel fare Such is creating division of sentiment and antagonizing princi pies and policies antagonizing the departments of our industries and commercial welfare antagonizing the great factors and forces that have made our nation great and crowned it with advance civiliza tion and I tell you that such state of affairs present a dark and fearful omen on our national destiny and become an index of a disastrous fu lure In every state of our nation find associations and orders regular organized and some have grown in to political prominence and are ex erting public influence and these factions are led and prompted by men of talent and ability but I shall confine my talk to one of these lions known as Socialism I under stand that there arc some persons now in our county who arc advoca ting the principles and teach ings of Socialism and are others to adopt the policies and methods that arc set forth in Social ism and are clamoring for political recognition in the county Now it vlilbc impossible for me on this oc casion to delineate to you all the facts concerning the origin course and principles shall say that Socialism and Communistic arc twin sisters and go hand in hand and that Socialism is a proposition of three parts the head and brain is Socialism the body and stomach Communism the last part and latter end and the climax is Anarchy Socialism has its inception in Europe under monorchal and forms of govcrment under hereditary rule and reign where royal persuasions landlords and dignitaries govern The word Socialism we might say is of comparatively recent origin having been conceived m England during the first part of the nineteenth century and during the 18303 the doctrine of Socialism was first taught by one Robert Owen and af terwards taken up by Reyban St Simon Fourier of France Karl Marx of Germany and othr per sons of some distinction Owens theory of Socialism was confined to the reconstruction of so tiers and taken up and made grow into political and religious portions and the of Socialism spread over all the countries of Europe but was maintained and confined to organize cd societies which would nourish fur a while and then relax Un fortunately Socialism was imported into this country and its seed sown upon our soil which has grown up and today is causing discord and discontentment in our attempting to array labor against capital and seeking national prominence and rule leading some of the laboring clement to be against even the fundamental principles of our great Republic and free against its laws and by argument based upon she fancy Now all of this is to be greatly rcgrctcd The word Sot alism as defined by the great Ger man economist Roscher includcs those tendencies which demand greater regard for than consist with hu man nature Adolf Hold says that we may define Socialism Every tendency Which demands the surrender of individual will to the community Janet defines it We call Socialism every doctrine which teaches that the state has a right to correct the inequality of wealth which exists among men and to legally establish balance taking from those who have too much in order to give to those that that have not enough In the words of chaffer The alpha and omega of Socialism is the trans formation of private competing capital into collective capital Hence we find Socialism involves fundamental change in the relation labor to land and capital a change which would largely effect the production and would entirely revolutionize the existing systems of distribution Socialism implies and sonnies with it a change in the political civil ethical technical arrangement and tutions of society which would con stitute a revolution greater than has ever taken place in human history scooter than the transition from the ancient to the medieval world or from the latter to the existing order of society There is an idea entertained Socialists that the human family should be unified and regulated to equilibrium of movement and action that all business industry sad commercial progress should be brought to a hori ontQl line and such is impossible and absurd and can only be a whim of the brain The human family is made up of a variety of talent taste intellect genius and disposition qpiration and energy which cannot be class cd together and such has always been the case It is said that there arc two things just alike in all the makeup of natural existence and there are no two persons a facsimile and the great apostle tells us that As one star differs from another shall the human family be at the resurrection morn The veriety of the human family we think was in tended and so ordained all wise creator every persons gifted to a place and purpose for such is nc cessary in the march of life Some have greater capacities than others and can be more useful to human progress and elevation than others and the worth and value of people is like the worth and value of other things a scientists is worth vastly to the world than the savage the individual that can do the most for the elevation of man kind is the most valuable in life and is entitled to more honor and commendation Now there is a right way and a wrong way and a s i y lv y pl imperial ticaland was afterwads bothers doctrine some industries b government constitution commonweal tt U the b andartistic ban persons more r rij i r Fever at del I Ins p way to be The idea that is enter tamed by Socialists that all people can be reduced to u common level of action and of thought and one person not be allowed to more fit and gain nml financial progress and attainments of scientific achievement discovciies and inven lion than others is absurd and pro fyostcrcous can only be entertained and fostered by vain fancy and im ngination Now to people to the scat level of industry and progress would be an act of tyranny and usuipatidn dcstrpy and bridle human ambition songs aspiration and cconomv It would be like going to sec a horse race and the horses would start and keep abreast around the come out together people would cease to go to sec such races Now intelligence has no affinity for ignorance energy has none for indolence no Inorc than oil has for water You cannot crouch down and confine intellectual genius with ignorance nor aspirnlions and en criy with slothfulness and indisposi tioa History and observation confirms this fact Intellectual genius has always risen above the level of commonality and led the march in the greatbattle of life an1 the world today owes its advanced status of civilization and refinement to the aspirations and energy of in tcllectual genius You cannot con fine mind or hedge in thought that was tried on old John Hunyan two hundred ycarg ago when cast in prison and shut up and off from light and life he wrote the Pilgtims Pro grcss which immortalized his name and charmed the world and shall go down the centuries with an embodt cd sentiment that shall live forever Music consists of several parts the part arc necessary to be sounded in order to produce melody in the various occupations and industrial requirements must be filled in order to produce progress and harmony There is another Idea taught by Socialists that wealth is the of human labor Karl Marx of Germany who wrote extensively on Socialism and political economy taught that labor was the source of all wealth and that the product of labor was valued according to uic that what constitutes value is human labor ia commodities jvc miist bHicA t4iatiiaVuralcxrsri and the makeup of notural ob jects is the basis of all wealth that wealth must exist before it can be developed by intelligence or labor and value that constitute natural the development of wealth of the earth for use and there arc three important intellectual genius capital and labor making a trio these three factors operating together become the power of human progress in the channels of industry to them they are ineffective intellect qal genius is the architect that on ginecrs directs the course and lays the plans for the track of the of life capital is the motor power that gives impetus and to the drive wheel labor and the car ot industry and progress moves along the road of success NOW the Socialists of this counry are figuring upon possibility and probi hties of getting the national of our government they have put forth candidate fqr the prcsi dents with some following Now in this large assembly there may be some persons of Socialistic pcrsua sion JjCt me ask you Do you want to tear down the great edifice of liberty and to subvert and annul the fundamental pies of this great govcrhmpt and to sot asule Uq Qottjtytjon and laws under which wq have so long lived and prospered a government that was born in the wilderness and rocked in the cradle of a seven years revolution nourished and protected by the the blood of patriots that has come up from its infancy to the qf two hqrjijred years and to day is greater in territory wealth and civilisation than the empire of the Caesars after the accumulated conquest of a thousand years and today is found in the front rank in the march of empires and you may the annals of history and the chronicles of time you may the catalogue of nations and you will not find any n here and at any time a more perfect government of political rclgious and civil liber ties on the face of the globe a gov ernmenl whose laws and constitution give equal tights and privileges to every person a in man is either directly or indi redly a sovereign and has a voice in adoption and amendments to the i i liAjjIJJ E prod con RC trackand andall product butt cote Now there are many source of wealth existence natural purpose actors railroad motion control search look- down whichever I 0 f i I k tied seter i America grin fiyd the arc r f to it to of 3 laws and constitution Now do you want to substitute for the gift of an cestors principles and policies that are united and untested and never exercised in national rule and ad ministration but have only existed in societies which have sprung up and gone down This Socialistic from of government is human fancy and delusion There is no individual or nation but what at times have its adversities and prosperities Man is to a great extent a creature of circum stances or lime and place anc con dition of things has much to do with human destiny but we have a nation ot principles and policies if we pro penis nourish them they will long weather the of time and grow and brighten and become more per by age and duration We have two great political parties which have long been as safeguards for protection of rights of the people and we see no necessity of side is sues and fragments of political dis cord it only tends to disorganize and to disrupt our place and tran quility 11 r Stickman spoke at length upon supply and demand and discoursed upon the rujdS of political economy and how that many persons had be come wealthy and millionaires by dealing in natural no labor was expended and that labor was but a value applied to and paid by thc consuracrand user When Mr llickman closed Mr Pcvclcr arc sc and addressed the crowd we will not be able to give his address n this article but will report it in ine next issue of this iii
