Gifford has taken possession of the earthly faculties and being of a using man and un deterred by death continues at work The late Mr Gifford was a well known artist His successor until after the demise of Mr Gifford was a gold worker and engraver Since he has been possessed by the spirit of Mr Gifford he has painted pic tures of which the execution is marvelous which are rec ognizablc as the equal of pictures painted by Mr Giffoid and which bear decided resemblance to them Mr Giffords alter ego is modest and has a keen realization of his present condition He has evidence which he considers incontrovertible to that he now harbors the genius and spirit of Mr to convince him that the late artist uses him as the medium for a con tinuance of the work which death preyented hun from continuing in his proper person This evidence has been submitted to Prof James H head of the American Society of Psychical Research Mr Hyslop has made a thorough and is convinced that Mr Gifford is at work in the person of the gold This will do well enough for once but it should go no further It should riot be allowed to establish a precedent No general objection will be urged against occasional manifestations of such a character but the principle is not right and the practice will work nn injustice It represents an unjustified intcrfei note by generation in the work of another It sets up an indcfens ible competition to be met by the living Mr Kipling has pointed that the person striving in literature and art meets this unfair compcti tion from the dead even though i tUe do n t iCLurn y iftuo itrljie boiiies of tht living and continue in productive activity This is obyi ous The modern author and the P dead author claim the attention of r the living reader The weight of j the dead hand already is heavy on the arts and no encouragement V should be given the efforts calculat this competition C Certain advantages might be ob tained if the dead great could con tlnue to produce but the effect on the living competitors would Wdis asttous For the sake of fair play if for no other reason it must be insisted respectfully that the Gifford arrangement be the last of its kind a long ent in Berlin told of the adoption of an ordinance in the German cap ital giving to designated authorities power to withhold on acthelic grounds permits for buildings on certain areas New it is stipulated must not impair the characteristic aspect of the street view of which they form a part Proposed Alternations even are to be approved only in case they cor v respond with the general style ordinance in question The constitution in country gives to the owner of piop erty the right to use it as he long as he docs not interfere his neighbors Violating aesthetic canons erecting structures that mar the beauty of a thoroughfare is not in v the eyes of the law as interpreted by the courts interference with the p rights of ones neighbors Yet no iS satisfactory scheme of city adorn ment can Mother and Son Drowned in Log Creek Last Sunday Afternoon One of the most shocking that has occurred m the county in many years was the drowning of Mrs Sam P Wilkins and her son Clarence a 15 year old boy which took place at the Rocky Ford crossing at Log creek near Old Salem about 3 oclock last Sunday afternoon Mrs Wilkins and her son had been on a visit to the home of Mrs Mack Phillips where they went Saturday and were returning home The rains Sunday threw a vast volume fit water in the creek which was misjudged by the occupants ot the buggy and when they drove into the stream it is supposed they were of the vehicle and drown ed The horse made his way to shore and walked up to the gate of a farmer who was away from home with his family for the day and it was some hours before anyone knew or suspected that the people had been drowned When he saw the horse he raised the alarm and soon formed a search party but the bodies were not until about 10 oclock at night Some underbrush had caught and held both bodies within fifty feet of the ford and they were carried to the late home near Earles The accident has cast gloom over whole community Mrs Wilk ins was one of the of her neighborhood and ttic boy was popular with all who him on account of his manly qualtities The husband and five children survive Funeral services were held at East Union church at 2 oclock Monday afternoon after which the bodies were laid to rest side by side in the church grave yard A vast concourse of people attended School Taxes Due Taxes due school district No 14 have been in the hands of collector James of the graders and liberal allowances for work have brought about greatly improved highwa conditions But we need now and need it badly a steam road roller of some ten ton weight One would be sufficient for the whole county and the 2000 investment would be the best expenditure of the peoples money that could be made Several miles of road surface could be made solid in a day and in tray cling from place to place m the grader crews the roads would by every trip be improved as some eight feet of the surface would be covered Look through our Fine Suits offered through July at 15 EADES BAIRD Muhlenberg have suffered from the continued rains of the last several weeks There are two im portant items needed and will be absolutely necessary before secure full benefits from our road graders and secure good roads and they are Tiling of the roads so that where carried across the roads it can be conducted un derneath instead of over the surface and a steam roller which will leave newly graded surface packed insuring a saving in damages from traffic as results now from loose surfaces left A road roller would soon pay for itself in the decrease of grading work nccessnry and the same time would produce much better roads The wash and wear ai l tear of road surfuces left loose soon destroy the benefits work of the grader The cook book up bythe Indies of Madisonville U on Sale
