JULY S 1909 50c PER YEAR IN ADVANCE J It Cleaning House By Electricity Even the time honored methods of sweeping and dusting have been vanquished and banished by elec tricity and in a few more years so they predict the housewife clad in apron and dust cap and carrying broom ahd dust pan will exist n pictures only No longer is it necessary to sprinkle down the before sweeping so that a larger percentage of the dust can be kept in the dirt in a heap and not go flying about the house to settle on the furniture pictures and woodwork Nor do the male members of the family to return in the evening lest they have to take the rugs out and beat them The sweeping and dust lug can now be done by electricity eliminating most of the work neatly all the dust and a large amount of tthe trouble Jt would make almost any hqtise wife angry to tell her the house She would be indig nant might even threaten you with a broom which is said to be such a handy weapon for domestic as well as offense 4 d yet it has been fully demonstrated that no woman can clean a house with mop broom and dustcloth half as well as electricity can do it For the electric cleaner sweeps and dusts with the aid of a vacuum produced by a small motor fan which sucks up every particle of dirt and dust Take the room that has been polished until it fairly glistens and go over it with the vacuum cleaner and you will get twice as much dirt as the housewife did Out of the cracks crevices and she missed the electric house cleaner will suck up whole of dirt Ths surface of the carpets rugs and draperies look clean bit warn ings were uttered against this insect and its actual guilt as a murderer of men was clearly demonstrated only at the time of the Spanish War when so tinny of the flower Qf Amer ican youth died of the typhoid fever that decimated the volunteer in the detention camps in all parts of the country So active is the fly in the spread of this disease that it has been pro posed in recent publication of time United States Department culture to rename it the typhoid II y It may carry the germs of this disease in one of two ways either directly by soiling its feet with the discharges from fever patients and then flying oft and alighting upon food or falling into milk or else by eating matter contaminated with ty phoid and carrying the germs in its intestinal canal and depositing them upon food But it is not alone typhoid that flies spread The germs of tubercu losis may readily be carried by them unless the patient has heeded the warnings sounded on all sides and taken cure to destroy all cxpcctoia ed matter The virus of a score may be taken up by a flys and a cut or abraded sur face of the skin of another person Any disease indeed which is capa ble of inoculation or of being improved means of diagnosis at our command it has been proved that many have had glanders and died of It with the pf the disease unrecognized The ulcers have been diagnosed as tuberculosis as those of typhoid of smallpox or of some form of blood poisoning and they have been treated accordingly with of course fatal results for glanders is a very dreadful disease the cure of which depends upon prompt and radical measures Today there is no excuse fur any failure diagnosis because the special bacillus causing glanders called the Bacillus malleiis pe culiar to this disease It is natur ally those whose work keeps them in close contact with horses who are most m danger of glanders and it has also been known to attack members of a family where the father worked in a stable and one case has been reported where a washerwoman caught it from infect edclothingGlanders may be either acute or chronic There may be a slow of abscesses attacking the muscles or crawling along the lymphatic system for months Some times after surgical treatment these abscesses will heal and there will be no further symptoms sometimes a slow chronic case will suddenly burst out into a violent acute one and death ensue Other cases are acute from first and may be mistatfenfor bloodpoisoning from some other cause or for an acute specific until the terrible cr ruption appears too late for any treatment to be of avail As to treatment there is little that is cheerful to be said Thorough cut ting out of the local sore is the one and only thing on which to pin any faith Attempts have been made to get an more In Rhode Island alone the smallest of all the States there were more cities of 8000 inhabit ants than there were in the entire United States in 1790 The ag gregate population of all cities in the area enumerated in 1790 which in 1900 reported mere than 50000 inhabitants was 185207 in 1790 and 10259186 in 1900 Although the total population of the relative population weight of New York Philadelphia Boston and Baltimore increased even more rapidly In 1790 their combined population was bat little more than 100000 and formed but 24 per cent of the pop ulation of the Republic but in 1900 it was approximately 6000000 or nearly 58 times as great as in 1790 and formed 76 per cent of the population of the Republic Food for the Fat It is possible that the actual pro portion of ovcrfat people in the gen et al population is no greater now than it ever was but to the observer who has lived many years it seems as if the numbei of persons one meets who are noticeably overweight had increased greatly in recent years Some large folk are content with lot nsarly all are jolly yet there are many who would give sy fpris ri aiogu for weight almost all efficacious if strictly followed but not all safe The original banting system for example in which the person is to little more than a lean meat diet js pot to be recommended and one who practises it unless un del constant medical supervision may do himself irreparable harm No one system indeed is applica ble to all cases for the cause is not always the same and what may be suitable for one fat person may not be at all what another needs It is popularly believed that all fat persons are gross feeders but this is not true indeed the reverse is often the case Obesity maybe a disease or rather a prominent symptom of one the trouble being with the internal chemistry or nutri of metabolism as it is called It is comparable to dia betes nearly related to it in fact In this disease sugar is formed In excess in the system even when little is taken with the food in obesity there is a tendency to the formation of fat in the body even if little fatforming food ih eaten In most cases however much can be done by a regulation of the diet The amount of meat should not be increased but the quantity of sugar and ptarchy foods should te reduced their place being tai by vegetables such as spinach cauliflower and salads The foods to be avoided or take n in great moderation are those which contain much starch such as rice and potatoes and all sweets pies puddings and candy Tea and should be taken without sugar if taken at all and chocolate should be omitted entirely Bread is fattening but for most persons it seems an indispensable article of diet Its amount can however be limited and it should be toasted 1ats are less harmful than sugar and starch anti may be allowed in moderation in the form of butter and salad oil The belief that the drinking of water makes fat is er roneous If one eats juicy vegeta bles and especially the less sweet fruits such as apples and grape fruit and abandons the use of sugar there will be a natural reduction in the amount of water taken but should drink all that is needed to PRACTICED Lawyers and their methods were the targets of sizzling criticism by brother lawyers at the session of the Illinois State liar association at Peoria recently- E P Williams of Oalesburj president of the association who is one of the oldest members of the bar in this state started the in his address The people arc awakening to the fact that in this laud of c the land government is by the people for the equal benefit the people times arc somewhat out of joint said President Williams that there is a cancer gnawing at the root of the trees of liberty that the rights of the people arc in danger by reason of the unpre cedented accumulation of wealth in the hands of the few that our mines our manufactures of every sort and transportation facilities whether by land or sea are all under control of corporations chartered under the laws drawn by lawyers paid counsel of the moters engineered through the sev eral legislatures of the congress as well by paid lobbyists All this is in furtherance of plans of crafty and designing combinations and conspir acies to the detriment of the public In the preparation and of this work the services of counsel are readily procurable for a money compensation and if an inquiry be instituted into the legality of the corporation there is no lack of eminent counsel ready and willing by means of every legal artifice to bar legitimate inquiry into the merits of the common people If the anger of the long suffering public be so thoroughly aroused as to tlemand and bring about an in dictment of public plunderers say a Boss Tweed straightway
