District I beg to sny that we are a little late In getting to you with our 1909 Pooling con tracts There have been various reasons why this matter has been delayed Your Board is ever anxious to serve your best interest and cannot therefore act as quickly on every proposition as we farmers would like for them to do The Board was anxious to set all the tobacco sold or to know just what disposition they would make of our present holdings before getting out a pooling contract Also the finance proposition was a problem to solve owing to the unsettled conditions of our home market Now as the English markets are short of stocks and especially bare of Kentucky tobaccos and prices linn on same your Board after consideration unanimously voted to ex port the remaining eighty percent of our 1908 pool and same is being prepared to go forward as rapidly as possible I want to further say that while this will take a little more time to get to a settlement than it woulJ should we have sold here at home as we last season which wo could not do without throwing down the price this we wouU riot do Yet when sales are made we will realize full market value on same We will not only get what we could have sold here for but the middlemans profits as well I trust that every farmer and I well know that every true Equity man will be satisfied with the action of the Board We expect this to answer a twofold purpose one is to get ful value for our goods another is to establish a precedence by taking our tobacco ourselves Into tlu worlds markets for which it was prepared By so do ing we set an example for others and also teach an object lesson to those who would buy that to delay in order to beat down the price is both unsafe and unwise lest they miss their prize This dots not necessarily mean that we wig have to export the 1909 crop but it does mean to those who want to buy that they mc t be ready before or during time of delivery or again they may get left out Now let us one and all station of cover Ing n period of live years the following conclusions were drawn Shropshire ewes appear to be more prolific than any other breed Ewes six years old produce the largest per centage of Increase while young have the greater percentage of single lambs The percentage of rune iambs Increases nnd tho percentage of ewe Iambs decreases as the age of the ewe advances A ram Is nt his best at MoneyMaker Dreading stock should bo accus tomed to their quarters before tho breeding season opens Those of our readers who have made up their minds to dispose of tholr old cocks should got them out of the way and replace them with now ones without much delay The old ones will nover taste much bettor than right now A tough old bird cau be made very palatable If put into a stew and cooked slowly long enough If tho old ones are not out of tho way before the new onos arrive tbo old ones will look upon tho now onos as Intruders anti fights will result than cnn srrve no good end If the new arrlvalj flnd no opponents they will accommodate themselves to conditions very quickly tho flock will be ready to Sot results by the time eggs are wanted for hatching There can bo no doubt about It no doubt that thogo who are reading progressive farm pjipars will want to Improve tholr flocks If they ao not this year they will next or the year after This thing of having good blood Is no mere idle whim It Is a money making proposition The sooner good is got into the Hoik the sooner will more pride be taken In tho bust ness and more profits taken out of the business- It requires ao much mcney to stock up on both males and females for the larger classes of live stock that most farmers feel they can not afford It but this is not the else with poultry A good male and a small number of females cut be got at a small outlay If there are no other males on the place tho new male can be used with the whole flock This will give a fow standard bred birds and many others that are not standard bred If one to have some that are pure standard bred blood and to know which are pure blooded and which are not It will be necessary to a pen for the pure bloods Usually pens for foultry on the farm should not be tolerated but nn exception might properly bo made In a cage of this kindWhere passible the raiser should begin at the lop every tlwe that Is start with standard brcj fowls In every case by using standard bred breeders of both sexes If this can not be afforded usually It can thcn get standard bred males and make a lh theJflock In twelve months will ixv enough to mako anyone proud The scccnd year the offspring will loop so notch like their standard bred an cestors that It will begin to be hard to tell the birds of mixed breeding from are standard bred When a flock reaches this degree of excellence It begins to be a very prac ticnl fowl for the farmer whose chief nlm Is to get n reasonable number of o gs and plea carcasses for selling and to have every lot of eggs and birds marketed grade evenly and con sequently make that pleasant Impres sion on the eye that makes good sales It so happens that after a poultry man starts with one breed of fowls he concludes ho ought to get blood by crossing with come other breed Such violent crosses ore un fortunno since a common result Is that the offspring do not develop tho gcod qualities of their Immediate an cestors so much as they do their bad qualities The offspring looks too much like mongrels Always get new blood by using birds of the breed The experience of practical breed ers have so repeatedly shown that those principles ore correct that there is no uso In listening to free ad vice given by some one who Is unatdo to tell whether a fowl Is standard bred or pot Wide experience and many observations are necessary to formulate rules for breeding and it Is safer to folio the advice of those who attained great success than it Is to follow the advice of some who has really never accomplished much With tho crops practically housed only the remnants to be gathered there is now nothing to dp but to fix up things generally nnd commence op cratlons for next years crop One good way to begin is to sow rye wherever pcrniblo for grazing in the spring and for soil Improvement We want to plan to mako larger per acre next year than we made this or last year either The surest way to do this Is to do better farming Rye will hold much fertility that would be leached out of the soil by time winter rains and lost to us If there were no living plants to tale It up And when plowed under next spring rye will give to the laud hi addition to the stored fertility humus which most of our lauds stand no much in need of It is late of course to rye but this Is ono of tho things about which It can be truth fully said Bettor lato than never A dry lour well covered with litter keeps the hens contorted when bllz zards are raging outside and it fills the egg basket when agss are worth anywhere from 30 to 50 cents
