Paralysis A prominent physician connected with one of the hospitals in New York City the startling state ment recently that 2500 cases of in fantile paralysis were treated in the public hospitals of New York every year and that the malady was cans ed by eating foods in which the process of decay had begun but was not noticeable Dr Fraucnthal makes this statement and he has the courage to add that the charges of men like Dr Wiley have scared parents concerning the use of harm less preservatives As a result food which has begun to decay from lack of harmless preservatives is fed to young Republican party e Review of Green Schools As we have stated in a former ar tide that Dr E W Hall with the support of the people would have built up one of the best schools in the state but this they refused to do and instead of showing a help ing hand many of the people anti some of the manipulators v v they couldto discourage aifdjbreak tr down his school oJ incui inai v cic auic iwuik pride in sending their children to be educated Now all of the opposition to Hall was the effect of political and religious prejudice or we might say ignorance Hall was an Eastern man and a member and minister of the Methodist Epis copal church which was not popular and well received by a number of the people of Greenville at that time Hall was also a man who had the courage and nerve to express the sentiment which he believed to be right in regard to matters concern ing the welfare of the people and a grander nobler man of pure char arter of elevated thoughts and con ceptions never lived in Greenville H was a man that was industrious and was becoming a power the moral growth of the town He was a prohibitionist and oppos ed to saloons and the liquor traffic and made a vigorous fight against lhcmN this turned quite a tide against him and proved to be detrimental to hi school for at that time a number of saloons wete running in lull blast and the citizens of the town were patronizing them and they took sides with the saloon interest However Halls school continued to build up and piospcr but unfottunately he sickened and died and no doubt that some per in Greenville rejoiced at the death of this good man After death Mrs Hall assisted by her son Elmer undertook to continue the school but she met with the same opposition that was put forth against her husband Certain would send their children off to other places to be educated Some of the antagonists to Mrs Hall went to work and had the school district purchase the old brick college for a district school house Purchase price and repairs amounted 2300 and this house ought to have been retained for the district school be inK sufficiently large and commodi Otis for such purposes more so than the one that was afterwards purchas ed and used for the last twelve years ho when they had secured the brick college they employed cheap teach ers though good ones and waged opposition against Mrs Hall Mrs Hall was q fine scholar a gifted teacher and a noble woman and could have conducted and built up for Greenville a first class high school but after a few years she r d r THE R RD a iuts x sThe 11 paper bl Now about that time the Methodist Episcopal church sent a man to look after the Hall srhnol property and if reported tavorablf the church wuuld the property and establish a school but when this was found out some of the Citizens and tnanipula tors of Greenville became alarmed and went to work to defeat the project They at once organized company and purchased the proper ty front Mrs Halt at a cost of 7 300 or at least such amount was afterwards charged to the school district They argued that it would never du to let the Northern Meth odist church establish a school in Greenville that it immi gration to the town and paralyze trade and that such a school was not at all desirable Now as to whether they were simple enough to really believe such or whether motives in view we know not however they purchased the property and at once started a and finally succeeded in maneuvering and persuading the people of the Greenville school to assume to the debt of 7300 and take the school property and relieve the company of what was then considered a white elephant by voting a tax of fifty cents on the hundred dollars worth of property in the district for six years to pay the debt with interest The school property consisted of forty acres of land two somewhat school buildings and a cottage The people were told the debt could be paid off withy three years but it afterwards turned out that It took eight tears and another tax of twenty five cents had to be voted to out Now the school district as much use for all this property as a wagon has for five wheels the manipulators then greatly enthused the people about having a first class school aud air were built all over the school property and In Greenville and a flourishing city was then anticipated and expected imagination and visionary fancy ran high After the district had secured the school property a number of were sold off for dwelling huus esand the old brick college was a mafJJskltlJl 11M SIX for tSoo at a loss of about 1500 more suitable and better adapted for a district school than that purchased for 7300 The of these sales amounted to about 2000 a tax of fifty cents and the state fund amounted to about the same making a total of between and 5000 This was very encouraging School trustees were circled to handle and take care of the money and to engineer the school now the trustees that were elected were all good clever men but their knowledge about educa tional management was limited and they were greenhorns in regard to knowledge of the regulation and proper discipline for a progressive school and they were subjects of outside manipulators whose ideas were also limited about first class schools Now after everything was shaped up to suit the leaders of the school crusade time chief and central idea was to estab fish a common graded school to gether with a high school under the same roof and to invite the people of the country to come to town and educate their children free and es pecially the young men and ladies of the country that desired to com plete their course of study This was done believing it would boom the town and revive trade so the school was made up and Lrof Crabbe of the Eustern part of the state was secured to take charge of the high school department at a fair salary with a suitable assistant also a necessary supply of teachers for the common graded school depart ment Prof Crabbe was a man but a thorough graduate with high attainments and came with good recommendation tho he had but little experience in conducting schools He might have proved a valuable teacher had he been re tamed long enough but unfortunate ly he struck the wrong place at the wrong time to exercise and exhibit his ability as an educator The trustees seeing their inability to successfully engineer a school shaped upon so high a plan of pro cecdures they turned the work over to the teachers and remained The teachers acted independ ently of each other each teacher wIth the receive their salaries Now the first school crusade vas run front start to titiuh without discipline regulations or order Now after the first yeais run it was thought by the who heads that the high school department had better le dispensed uith and the circumference of the school he to the limits of a common graded school as the amount of ex penscs were in excess of the income so the trustees were requested to discharge this professors of the high school and that the school should proceed on the common graded school basis New different teachers were employed every yanr generally new and unexperienced beginners and light weight some did not know the first principles of conducting a progressive school Trustees were elected occasional ly the same calibre as their predecessors so the school went on opened anywhere from nine to eleven closed at anywhere from one to three sons were recited some pranking and perhaps a little fighting and the services of the day would close The school went on under such state of affairs from year to year until recently whiten some trustee or patron of the school happened to pass by the school house and took a look at the condition and found it to be in a very bad state of dilapida tion and dirty as if the house had been swept not more than once or twice a year They at once gave the alarm of disease germs to the people of the ton and everybody became alarmed The county rose up and declared the house unfit for school after this the first school crusade at an end after having run about twelve years and which has been declared by sonic of those who were instrumental getting it up and as sisting in engineering it as being a failure anti a farce from beginning to end And many of the citizens of Greenville have had to send their children elsewhere to educate them so dpingJ When tjie djs and manipulators that were the leaders in getting up the first school crusade woke up from their lethargy and stupidity and took the dilemma by time horns and sounded tocsin and started a second school crusade They succeeded in having the district to vote a 12000 hand issue to be used in reorganise inc repairing and remodeling the old dormitory school building dtulle te amount could have been vocd us easily for about half the voters of the district pay little or no tax and they arc indifferent as to amounts and as a general thing those that have the most children pay the least tax with a few excep lions Now 12000 repairs on a house that ought to be worth about the sumac together with the interest on the bonded bebt would furnish the district with a 30000 which would tell vwell for a little place like Greenville but it is not always the house that makes good schools A good school in a log house is better than a ball one taught in
