schools Greenville has always had schools the early pioneers built a school house in the first years of the nineteenth century It was n one story two roomed brie k build ing built on the Mast side of Cherry street and North of plain cross street This house was used for several years both as a place of worship and for school purposes i was called the Ciiecnvillc Seminary and for a number of years was used as a district school house and a county high school it being a high cr graded school than any other in the county As a district school house it had a run of about eighty years until the district secured oth er school property and then it was torn down and removed and now a vestige of it can be seen Its site is occupied by a dwelling We this school house years altogether with a number of young men and ladies of Green vine and some young mpn floral the country The school was taught by M J Roark deceased Those is hut one other person living in Greenville that we know of that attended that school at that time the balance have either died or moved away thus ends the history of the Greenville Seminary During the year of 1850 one Wil liam Green began the establishment of what was called the Greenville Female College he built houses a beautiful site perhaps not ex celled anywhere in the state for beauty and attractiveness Green married a daughter of James Weir noted pioneer and man of wealth Green was an educated man god of high intellectual attainments he was also a Presbyterian preacher and considered a fine sermonizer In our boyhood days we often heard him preach The whole tenor of his lite seemed to be based and centered upon education which he principally devoted to such work perhaps he was a little fanatic about such natters He spent a fortune of 5000000 for the betterment of education m Greenville and Muh lenberg county he not only built the school buildings and cottage now owned the Greenville school but he assisted greatly in building school houses in different parts of the county which greatly reduced his means Green the Greenville Female Academy under the very best discipline and regulation supplied it with compel tent teachers from the East and all the necessary comforts for a good school and had A large attendance of young lady students from differ eat parts of the state and his school boon became noted with widespread reputation After a few years Greens means failed him and he became broke unable to further conduct the school successfully after having his means and time for the educational advantages of his town and county he sold out his school property to Cumberland Presbyterian Church he left the county and state a poor man never to Return but spent eventful and useful life in oth cr states and then passed away When the Cumberland Presbyter tan church came in possession of the school property they continue the school under the sains discipline anti regulations inaugurated by Green and employed some of the same teachers that served under Green For the first few years thi school was placed under the care of Musss Anthony and Abbot experi enced educators It was then pint ed under the superintcndency of William McNary then under charge of the Rev J C and again under McNiry thin under the Rev W L Casky then under the care of the Rev James Morton thn under the charge of the Rev Azcl Frcem xn then the property was purchased by th Rev W L Casky and run a fe v years and sold to E W Hall thus ends the life of the Gr ivilb feiiile school after a successful and pros perous run of about thirty years it had ben attendance of young men until the civil war came up when it was closed and many of the students under went into the war Some were lost on battle fields and men of distinction James K Patterson married a daughter of Chas F Wing a handsome and noble woman when the schuul here they wept to Lexington whore Patterson engaged in oduoa atonal matters and is now a profcs sor and President of a high school at that place William and Walter Patterson younger brothers we think have died I here arc two old men now living in Greenville who attended the Patterson shop After the war several attempts was made to establish a permanent and progressive school but were unuc The Greenville School district purchased the property and uuod it a while for a district school house the house is now occupied as a thus ends the history of brick college Shall history repeat itself and shall Greenville again have such noted and prosperous schools as wpre in former years These old schools wore an honor and a credit to Greenville The people that lived in Greet ville during the progress of those schools were are of a different char acter from those that live here now They were brought up as it were under the old constitution girls and boys paid for their education they afterwards appreciated its value and generally made good use of it Free education is not always effective A young man that earns his money by his own efforts and energy knows its value but one who receives as a Rift does not know and appreciate its are valuable sinews of strength to the progress of a country These old citizens did not practice modern manipulation of scheming and laying plans and traps to catch somebody and their money but they were prompted by honest mo ties Now in way of memorial upon the once fatuous female school we would add Altho the founder of the historic female school today sleeps beneath sod and soil of a distant state yet here in Greenville his once loved homo on that magnificent site which he selected sixty ears ago and made it so beautiful and attractive arc still standing the school houses he built proudly pointing to the sky as monumental trophies of honor credit to the name of a noble mar who once exercised the energies of his soul and poured out the devo tion of his great philanthropic heart for the moral and intellectual ad vancement and betterment of his country Those old school buildings land marks and relics of other times that have a remarkable history stand to flay as living monuments and objects of the fond recollections of persons who were gathered within their walls as students during the antebellum days and years afterwards many have gone down in death yet some survive and may dwell in far off homes their heads become white their eyes dim by the passage ol years and their strength weakened by the toils of time yet their fond recollections no doubt often steals back to old Greenville their mem orics review again the old school buildings the rooms and halls that once resounded with the songs of joy and gladness where they spent so many happy days of their in the warm associations of and classmates for whom formed attachments of respect and love Their school days were the happiest period of their lives full of hope and bright anticipations of a long drawn future where Fancy pictured for life a noble tread amid flowers of peace happiness and love by age Now the reali tics of those old school days are simply indelible impressions that have been made upon the tablets of memory and are matters of recol lection the old citizens and parents who would attend the closing exec cises of the female school and would rejoice at the triumphs of its success have all passed away and rest in graveyards here and elsewhere each in their narrow cells forever laid and with their forefathers sleep There arc very few persons living in Greenville now that were livitig here in early history of these schools there are three ladies living in Greenville ago Prof E W Hall and lady came to Greenville from New York they were people of high standing and good families they came with diplomas of the best school of New York and with a number of ol
