GREENVILLE 1A The Conquest of Consumption This is a winning fight The en emy is slowly but steadily retreating inch by inch in good order still facing us and showing his teeth but retreating nevertheless Not only so but laboratory scouts have so thoroughly reconnoitered his and so accurately counted his full mere ly line of battle but reserves and supports that plans arc already be lag laid to turn his flank cut his communications and turn his re treat into a rout and unconditional surrenderFor first decade or two after the discovery of germs cause of disease the more vc found out about them the more discouraging the outlook seemed to get With every new bug that was labeled and attached to Its ap propriate disease the wonder grew that we were Germs to the right of us germs to the left of us germs in front of us wriggled and squirmed The round earth seemed one writhing and swartrjing ball of bacilli The food upon our tables the soil of our gardens and fields the floors and walls of our houses the dust of our streets the water of our wells and streams nay even the crannies between our teeth and the coils of our intestines were alive with tiny demons Finally the climax knew the worst Wc had unflinchingly ex plorcd and exploited every feature every horror of our it suddenly dawned on us that we were still alive and happy We had not increased the slumber of our enemies one littlest bacillus by magnifying them with the micro nor had we added a single species to our involuntary house hold pets the disease germs by naming and classifying them They hadrall been around and about and b us for generations nost of v must us rot cuaiciues We have Been huddled together like sheep leaving the bacilli to do all the fighting Even if tubercule bacilli be as dangerous as torpedo beats we human have grown into Jourgun and fortyknot torpedo boat destroyers Bacilli are vegetables we and our business and means of livelihood has been eating and getting fat on vegetables of every imaginable sort since the dawn of time As the worthy Mr Jobson when he undertood to write poetry discovered that he had been talking prose all his life without knowing it so we and our ancestors have been fighting and conquering germs for generations without recog nizing it The only thing needful is to find out just how we have done it improve upon these natural methods combine them with our new knowledge of the actual and habits of the enemy and the battle is ours We had come to regard ourselves much as Falstaff did his recruits tush mortal men mortal men Food for powder food powder A powder whose grains were alive and wriggling As a matter of fact we are the toughest the most resourceful the most fero cious and dangerous animal that walks upon the face of the globe and can kill with Its own weapons and conquer in its own element any thing that runs or flies or burrows or swims We have conquered animal and tamed every vegeta ble we cared to for the service of wan and the only reason have not yet added the bacteria to our conquests is that we dIdnt know of their existence until about half a century ago Now that have discovered and located them they are next on the list and their conquest yes only a question of time Emphatically the new message of new bacteriology is a message of hope not of discouragement of good news not of evil tidings Apart from its cheering revelation of our power of resisting injurious germs for every enemy that the microscope has revealed to us it has shown us a hundred friends Our disease germs are a mere handful of black tiny radioactive bodies Ra dium is a substance probably one of the chemical elements in very minute quantity in pitch blonde and is one of the queerest substances known It is constantly giving off inconceivably minute which travel with tremendous rapidity and pass through glass and many solid bodies apparently as readily as through air In addition to these rays which are of three kinds there is a peculiar gas or vapor the socalled emanation giv en oft by radium which may so neighboring objects as to make them for the time being radioactive The action of radium is similar in many ways to the Xrays and will produce a burn when a vial containing a very small quantity of is held to the skin for a certain time It has been employed in in the treatment of the same diseases that have been found to bp benefited by the Xrays These are chiefly diseases seated in the skin or mucous membranes such as eczema moles ulcers and superficial cancer Birthmarks have been cured by radium but some times the marks have been cured by disfiguring scars even worse than the original trouble The itching of eczema is frequently relieved quck ly by a brief application of radium Its most striking effect is in causing superficial cancers to disappear and even those beneath the surface and in parts inaccessible to the have apparently been cured by in serting a glass tube containing ra dium into the tissues Lupus a disease of the skin for the relief of which the treatment has been much employed has also been cured by radium In addition to the rays use has been made experimentally of the eman ation It has been collected on a suitable surface and then dissolved in water and the solution injected into a mouse has apparently cured a cancerous tumor of the intestine Other wonderful effects have been obtained by radium but it also often fails and until it is known why it cures in one case and fails to cure or even does harm in another ap hotfoot worldno thinks FREEIf t 1 Uintroduced asH u occu the time of the unfortunate ilroAtung of S urlin and l ies fur n the legend of Lew Allen Mill nre carried to the days of the roving Indians The much talked of hew Allen or Lcwdlyn Hill is located on Pond River bottom about two miles south ot Murphys Lake but only a short distance from Cut Off Slough Or with reference to other land marks it is one mile cast of J N Stivers home on Reynolds Turkey Mill about two titles northeast of the old Prowsc or Johnson bridge little over a mile from the long abandoned Divinity Graces First Trnp Ford The sic of this hill is not at all in proportion to its tunic It is nn oval shaped elevation twenty test high and surrounded in even direction by the level bottom land of Pond River fur a distance of half a mile or more Its area in Lauding its sloping sides is about one acre It is covered with beech jfud sugar trees of various sues On the top near the center is the stump of a recently cut black oak three and one half feet in diameter The legend of Lew Allen Hill old and likewise vague tale there are two versions of it One is to the effect that the Revolution a Captain Knight and his colony of settlers located somewhere on Pond River between what later became the site of the Jessie H Rcno Mill which was built in the early and stood near Prowses BrIdge and Graces Fish Trap Ford opposite the pic turesque Graces Bluff There it is said these pioneers built a strong block cabin and furl Captain country Tradition does not tell how many men were connected with his little station The probabilities however are that there were only a fewAmong the Captains compan ions was one Lew Allen or Leel lyn who so the story runs while out looking after some bear traps wandered from the camp to this distance of about t o miles He was standing on this mound like elevation trying to lo a favorable spot for another irap when suddenly he was and killed by a number of In dians Knowing that hew Allens friends would be likely to search the woods for the red men dug a hole on the top of the hill threw the corpse into it and then made an effort to conceal its hiding place The following morning after a diligent hunt Captain Knights men discovered Lew Allens body and rebured it in its original made grave The few small pieces of now scattered over this knoll are said to have serv ed at one lime as the murdered mans tomb stone AcvCtffldjng to the other version Lew Aljcft ap prospector came to 15 hoood what is now Hartford jn Qj jg pog ty which was then one of ifop fciy settlements in western Kentucky These two men having been caught n a heavy rain near Pond River built fife and put up a wigwam of lhciPpof his hillock fur which purpose it was a suits ble place than the wet bottom They removed all their drenched their buckskin shirts iVTiijii cjgsged in dry Ing their wparjng apparel aj fifti paring a meal fuiinrt thernsey es without a moment warning at tached by three or four Indians Some say the Indians rushed upon the two white men simply for the fun of searing them At any rate a few shots were exchanged and Lcw Allen was killed His frightened companion however made his es cape through the woods anti ought his way back to soldiers trousers Such are the two versions of the legend of hew Allen lull EACh hits its enthusiastic upholders and its cqitlly enthusiastic drniers The same may also be said the two theories regarding the origin of the hill On the one hand are those who have come to conclusion that it is nothing more or less than n nniurnal hill like many of the other small end large hills scattered over Pond River Lot tom Altho I know very hth about archaeology or the science of an tiquities still like some of the oth ers who have seen the place I yen tore the ouininn that Lew Allen Hill is not an artificial mound In my opinion It is merely n small ele vation like its neighbors Coon Hill Long Ridge and Greens Island all of which with time two considerably higher hills knqwn as Birds and Reynolds Turkey Hills are located between the Old Slough and Pond River It is true n outline of n so railed dug iliicli or trench a fool or less in depth and from 5 to 10 feet wide can be traced in many places around th bats of Is v Alien Hill Hut such broken anti shallow tranches Ctn ahn b sion n t only aroutid three small elevations just mentioned but also found near the foot of Bards turkey and Key nolds Turkey Hills the two much higher and larger hills referred to Each of the latter covers more than a hundred acres Bordering de pressions like those occurring here arc according to geologists the rc suit of currents in the oveiflow They are no more artificial than the wide levees along the river whose banks arc always higher than tin bottom land further away from the stream cling to the old term and call it Lew Allen Hill I presume its isolation for as said there is no elevated land with in half a wile of it and its shape combined with the fact that many Indian or Mound builders mounds exist throughout this and other of the upper Pond River country likely suygeated that possibility of its being an artificial mound Among the best preserved mounds in this locality that were undoubted ly built by human hands is one in the Old Mound yield on a high hill of the Newton B Roddick farm This hill is in Hopkins county and overlooks West Fork Creek about two UJJltS above its outlet into Pond River The mound on it is about 13 fern high and 60 foci in meter It is covered a growth of small ireen Truces can aiil be of what seems to have been an arti ficial trench leading from near this mound down through a hollow for a distance of about 300 yards to the creek There were at one time about half a dozen such elevations in this field but haying been plowed over during ihe of half a century or rhpre for the purpose of cultivation they are now almost leveled to the sur surface mounds more or less pre iervefl scan be found on nearly the farms whose bills pyerlook Pond River the saute cows showed practically ill tame average production Stripping by hand after machine milking was found necessary In most casts The economy of machine mliking Is due to n saving in time and In help necessary to mill n large herd About five minutes for each cow ore saved where four cows are milked at once nnd more tune when one man operates three machines milking six cows at one time The rust of operating two machines by electric power was about 4 hour Tfie oXrfimiRUl showed that the germ content was slightly dcoroiiscd and till keeping quality of the mill was somewhat Im proved by machine milking Veteri nary examinations showed no appreci able effect on the udders or the gen oral health of the cows as n result of machine milking The experience of fortyone dairy farmers covering
