Drowsiness Sleepiness is a normal and healthy condition when it occurs at the usu al bedtime and when not extreme and over powering But it is not always associated with sleep Some persons in perfect health lent sleepers hardly know the of drowsiness they are active mentally and physically until they arc in bed then sleep comes at once end when it leaves them in the morning they arc agaimin full men tal awakeness There arc less fortunate persons who never have a complete and sat isfactory nights rest who arc yet almost constantly drowsy they arc always nodding but when the head touches the pillow sleep recedes and the night is a succession of drowsy lapses to sleep with the in stant return of semiconsciousness In general with the exception noted at the beginning of this ar ticle drowsiness is abnormal and indicates something wrong either in the body of the sufferer or in his hab s Those who habitually cut off their hours of sleep the night owls and the burners of the mid night oil pay for their bad habits by attacks of sleepiness in the after noon and early evening later after the influence of digestion wears off the drowsiness disappears and then relieved of his burdens the person sits up to all hours again thinking in that way to make up for the hours lost by the drowsiness If he would abandon his owlish habit go to bed bedtimes and get the seven or eight hours of continuous sleep that he needs his daytime and evening drowsiness would disappear he could do more and better find life much more enjoyable A slight drowsiness is often notic ed after a is sensitive through each nostril several times a day The na sal douche so often recommended should be used only under the di rection of a physician The mouth is often the place of origin of the odor Decayed teeth or the decom position of food particles allowed to remain between the teeth or gums with suppuration round the ddges of the teeth may one or all affect the breath unpleasantly The regular use of the toothbrush with an antiseptic mouth wash will usually remedy this There may be an accummulalion of fur at the back of the mouth which gives an odor to the breath this should be removed with a spoon or the ring in one of the handles of a pair scis sors The tonsils may have odorous accumulations of secretion in their pits Trouble in gny part of the digestive tract i very likply to declare itself in the breath Cons tipation especially is so betrayed It js well that foods onions for example will scent the breath but it is not so generally ap preciated that the eating of a large amount of meat will often give a peculiarly disagreeable quality to the breath The emotions may have their effect too and the illtemper ed person or the worrier is thus an offense in more ways informed me it is three miles long and another said to go round it is a six mile walk Without having heard any remarks regarding its width I for some reason or other concluded that a lake of such length would naturally have a width of at least a quarter of a mile Three miles long and six miles around are approximate measure ments that do not misrepresent its length However in regard to its width I will say had my legs been a little longer I could have straddled this lake on its two shores at one time and thus by three miles lung I could at the same time have made its six miles around In other words Murphys Lake is i lagoon some 40 feet wide meand ering fur three miles in Pond River hnttim at a distance of about a half mile from the over itself It is a part of the old abandoned riverbed now represented by two lung deep bends of the old rivcf which arc connected by a number of smaller and shallower crooks The upper of these two big curves is known as Fishermans Bend and the lower as Greens Bend The Mur phys Lake bridge crosses one of the shallow links that help unite these two mam bodies of the lake This bridge was built a few years ago by F E Green who is a son ot Wm Green and a grandson of Na thanial Green During the dry seasons practically all of the water disappears from the shallow bed leaving only Fisher mans and Greens Bend well sup plied The mud bottom of the in at such times has slough Tilled with logs and snags These dangerous sawyers arc also frequently found in the lake proper Aquatic plants ot many varieties thrive in the lake Among them are great clusters of a species of lily bearing beautiful yellow flowers known as Bonnets or Spatterdock The large Bends are gracefully lined down to the very waters edge with willow and other shrublike growths On the shore stand the monarchs of the forest such as are usually found in low lands Some of these trees draped with wild grape vines bend over the banks of the lake and often form unbroken arches with those leaning from the opposite side A dense growth of short cane is spread in every over the rich ground Lakes originating from abandoned river beds arc found a of places in the Pond River bottom Sucji fqr Instance is Long Pond or fong Jag jn Hopkins county about three Mc Iary where the pool oocurs in a bfg bend of Pond river The bed of Long Lake is deeper than that of the stream The at the toot of Spring Hill This same Puddle is also the outlet for Joilcs Creek near the mouth of which is Fish Pond Hill Thus the Mud Puddle receives its supply more less constantly from Joilcs Creek and only occasionally but bountifully from Pond River through Cut Off Slough and At klnsons Little Slough The water from these various sources after having passed through Mud Puddle flows into the upper or Fishermans Bend of Murphys Lake It then continues is crossed by Murphys Lake bridge and next appears in the lower or Greens Bend After considerable shifting and driving in every direction it finally over the Scatters of the Lak into Elk shallow pool covering about looacres It next finds its way through Muddy Slough into the Outlet which is the lower end and continuation of Martins Creek For convenience we shall refer to this chain of inlet sloughs puddles lagoons scatters and outlet as the Old Rvcr Slough Their combined links cover a distance of about sev en miles The general course of i s first half is toward the northeast At Murphys Bridge it changes the northwest Thus the Old River Slough and the present bed of Pond River endure a more or less diamond shaped area of over 3000 acres all with the exception of about 200 acres is bottom land In 1853 Isaac Bard recognizing the quality this soil made an at tempt to give Old River Slough and its adjoining territory a better
