There Seattle April 9 Kentucky will participate m the Alaska Yukon Pacific Exposition at Seattle this summer and is prepared to make a creditable showing at the great Pa cific exhibition Edward M Flex ner chairman of the Kentucky commission recently by the governor is in to make arrangements for partici pation at the fair While it will not be possible for Kentucky to under take anything in the way of a state building or very much in the line of a very large state exhibit funds be ing raised by private subscription and by the aid of izations throughput the state assure excellent representation at Seattle for this grand old commonwealth of the south Commissioner Flexnpr is arrang ing for space in one of the large ex hibit palaces on the grounds and Kentuckys display will no doubt i be given a prominent location in the agriculture building This structure has a frontage on the Cas r cades and Geyser basin the central ornamental features of the fair The v space will also provide a room to I be used as a headquarters for visit it By the tint the Kentucky exhibit reaches Seattle the fair will be com plete to the smallest detail On March i the exposition was more than ninety five per cent complete and thousands of workmen are now busily engaged in completing a few remaining buildings and adding the finishing touches to the landscape features The exposition is how it called the fair that is ready in Seat 1 tIe for all of the larger exhibit buildings are complete and the government is just completing a tgroup of handsome structures at the head of the Cascades Uncle Sam has a handsome structure Near this building the Grand Trunk railroad has erected a building tp show a fine line of min and agriculture exhibits and New York is now completing v a replica of Sewards old home near I exposition is being held on the campus of the University of Washington and when the fair comes t to an end the university will fall heir to a large number of the buildings Seven are of a found out then the anemia which is really only a symptom of some disease and not a disease in itself will be called sec ondary instead of primary The principal forms of primary anemia arc chlorosis pernicious anemia and lenkamia Chlorosis generally attacks young girls in the early teens It is not very well un derstood but seems to be a of poor blood formation rather than of blood destruction Its treat ment is simple consisting in fresh air good food and the administra tion of some form ot iron The re sults arc prompt and with a little cats a perfect state of health be established Pernicious anemia is another mat ter It attacks adults both men and women and is almost newsy fatal The victims of this form of anemia arc often well clothed in flesh and look robust Further more their symptoms are in many cases mistaken for those of kidney or heart trouble paralysis disease of the liver and so on until an ex amination of the blood establishes a diagnosis Leukamia means literally white blood Cincinnati at aooV Wednesday He had been there for about three months under treatment a sufferer from a general breakdown due to over work While it was understood here that his condition was serious 1881 he graduated with honors from the National Normal University For some years he taught in the in 1882 marrying Miss Mary Creegan who had been a stu dent and who also graduated from the university He returned to Kentucky in 1885 establishing the Glasgow Normal School and for ears wag at the head of that institution when he was elected dean of the pedagogical department of dhe State University at Lexington remaining there for seventeen years rhea he moved with his family to Worcester Mass where he did special work and pursued particular studies in Clark University for a year When the State Normal Schools were established he was w lected as president of the eastern cchool located at Richmond where lie remained until his death all these years he did a vast amount of work and study travel parts of the country in In work lecturing attending and national conventions and in general d era awl as a plat term speaker In addition to this Ae was author of several books the better known being historian a field of interesting research Ever a poet would find Murphys Lake and its surrounding forests and hills the of many inspirations- In fact I am sure that any no matter in what direction his taste may lun can enjoy a visit to this region of the Pond River country The hospitality of its people like that displayed in all the other parts of Muhlenberg is unbounded I was the guest of J N Stivers and Norris H Carlton and their families during my stay there Murphys Lake is in Muhlenberg county some twelve miles south west of Greenville The territory between the Court House and Mur phys Lake is rolling and hilly of fering here and there an attractive landscape Glen Stivers and I found it a very pleasant drive Occasionally we noticed consider able of what is known as thin ground While commenting the various degrees of fertility of blob lenberg soils among which the bot tom lands are always considered the best I remarked to Glen Slivers that in places I saw very little of such land along the road leading our destination Glenn then informed me that nearly all these hills were bottom land for the simple reason that since their ferule tops had been nothing now remained but their barren got tom which bottom land was very much in evidence V inrr cdnversauonT on the road from Greenville is the Sharon Baptist church built in 1889 Neal it under a concave bluff is the much frequented Rock Spring Further on is Mt Pisgah church Beyond these arc the ruins of the famous Old Liberty Still further on the same highway are Olive Branch and Greens Since our stop at Old Liberty was only incidental I will refer to the subject but briefly No one spot in the county except of interest to as many of old families of Muh lenberg ag this church and its Unfortunately its history has never been written The original building it is said was put up about a century ago for a Union church house and was then culled New Liberty In the course of time the first log house was replaced by a second and latter by the one which was abandoned some twenty years ago Old Liberty church is now in ruin four tottering lug walls each about zsft long enclosing sunken floor and a caVedin root mingled with broken benches and a pulpit The hewed logs partly shaded by a large white oak show that they had at one time been wel pointed with sand and lime Its four windows and two doors will soon collapse With them will fall the walls and so bye and bye no part of this historic house will be left to mark once famous church Immediately back of the ruins jthaj o fire southwest is the Old Liberty burying John A Allison Richmond and Sarah Pace John and Abigail McCracken and many of the other early settlers of the Old Liberty neighborhood This is the largest of the old coun try graveyards in Muhlenberg The largest and best kept of the new country cemeteries is the one at Friendship about five miles south of Greenville and about the same distance east of Old Liberty which was started in the spring of 1883 and now acccording to the record kept by Mrs Susan 1 Metzger contains 180 graves Friendship church however dates further back than its cemetery for the church was established in 1837 The present spacious frame erected in 1893 is the third house of worship built on that site Previous to 1883 the members of that congregation used their own private burying grounds some of begun more than a hun dred years But it is Murphys Lake and the things I heard and saw while in that neighborhood about which to write today The lake was so called after Tom Murphy one of the of that region who set tled near its banks some time during the first of the nineteenth cen tury and lived there until his death in 1865 His three sons James R W Jess and Sam V Murphy still reside in the immediate vicinity Among the old and well known men of Tom Murphys day were Richard Thompson John Swan At kinson Rev Isaac Bard and Joe C Reynolds Richard Thompson died in 1851 leaving no children John Swan Atkinson Vho died at the age of 78 in 1861 was survived by three sons one of whom is the now aged John Swan Atkinson Isaac Bard who died in 1878 was the father of four children the eldest qf whom is Mrs Verona M Larkin the mother of San Bard Larkin Joe C who died at the age ot 74 in 1868 was the father of six children among whom is John T ReyKolds Sr now livingjn Grccn 1 I tin who came here from Virginia They were the forefathers of the Martins now scattered throughout Muhlenberg William Martin the originator of the tobacco manufac turing business in Kentucky was born Dec 13 1776 and died Nov S His brother Hutson Mar tin was born Jan 10 1778 and died July 7 1838 Both are buried at Old liberty Hutsons wife Aunt loan lived Jan 29 1869 She treated many of the sick in the nciyhb irhuod with her own prepar ations made of native herbs and in the meantime acquired the title of Mother Mar of the other pioneers the dates of whose deaths are unknown to me were George O Prowse Jacob Jnibjer Plvinity Grace Na thaniel Green Janob Qgclsby New ton B Keddlck Rev Sam Wilkins Jefferson Rice John Uohen ald Uncle Kirby and Old Man Jails all of whom lived in Tom Murphys day and did much toward the development of
