KYt THURSDAY APRIL 15 1909 oOs PER YEAR IN ADVAKGE A FEW INTERESTING ITEMS FROM FAR AND NEAR 4 Prof Muenstcrbergs machine for detecting lies technically known as a galvanic psychomeler has attracted much attention de spite the caustic comments with which it has been received in scicn tific circles Many interesting rc suits have been obtained by expen meats carried out by Dr Vcraguth of Zurich with the psychomctcr He found that when mind and body were completely at rest there was a gradual diminution of the current A noise a light a touch reading of an exciting novel mental or the recollection of some ex ciding incident all the end of a few seconds which may be called the latent period a mark ed increase ol the current Ina lecture before the Aeronautic Society in New York city on March i6th Mr Hudson Maxim brought out the point that the dropping of dynamite from air craft would not be as dangerous to fortifications and buildings as generally supposed because in order to do much dam age this explosive must be confined If 100 pounds of it were dropped in to the smoke slack of a warship or exploded in the water close to the vessel it would be effective but dropping upon the deck would be 6t no avail Mr Maxim as is well known is an expert upon explosives He also described some new plosives that may be available for in explosive motors The part that lightcolored walls may play in the illumination of a room or building is clearly brought out by an illustration in the current number of the Electrical Journal A person reading in a room with darkcolored walls and with a source of light entirely behind his field of vision may declare the il f i though not shining on the page he is reading the pupils of his eyes will commence to contract Less light will enter them from the print ed page and it will appear to the reader that the page is growing darker This shows the use of v white or very lightcolored walla may actually decrease the efficiency f of the illumination The suppression of sleeping is only a question of efficient administration and organization and there is little doubt that in time the tsetse My will be conquered with the result that the disease will cease to devastate wide districts in Africa The disease is spread by a biting in sect which is distributed in patches over many thousands of square miles in Africa the inhabitants of School Bond Isue When professor Poole had con cluded his address the Hon Ben Tooley arose and said Ladies and gentlemen I feel highly flattered to have the honor and pleasure of ad dressing you on so important mat ters as I shall proceed to do I am before you tonight to talk to you about sport of its importance and its good effects But before I shall enter upon a general discussion of this momentous subject I want to say that professor Poole has taken the pains and made it a point In his discourse to criticize me in the stand that I have taken in this matter and I am of the opinion that there are but few individuals within the sound of my voice who arc not the sub jects of professor Pooles criticism and that there is not an individual in this town or county unless they have a bad case of hypochrondia and blues or nearly dead or dying but what enjoys some kind of sport more or less Now the professor al so stated that there was something wrong in and that the people needed more light Now I agree with the professor that there is something wrong in Greenville but I differ with him as to what they need instead of more light they need more sport and fun They have had too much light already and not enough sport Now I want to say that as soon as I reached your little town tha I found some persons that were with a disease called shrivels or these cases are free quently found in villages and places where they are destitute of sport Now this disease often becomes chronic on the account of no sport remedy I am told that Greenville has never had any sporting facilities since it has been a town and I am told now that there is no dancing hall no suitable pool room or club rooms nothing but a small skating rink and perhaps an Owl The little while that 1 have been in your town I have not yet heard a good hearty and healthy laugh ut tered by anyone Everybody seems to be more or less serious and in passing one another they look at each othcr aS it xlicy were afraid of one another Now to lie cured of this state of affairs you should build you a large sporting house for all kinds and commence the practice of sport ing and you will be an entirely dif ferent people and you will begin to enjoy life Now I want to say further that sport is the panacea of time and the largest vital of life and living and the best remedy for hyt pochrondia and the blues that can be found in the dispensatory of remedies When you hnd a person that has no desires for any kind of sport and can take no part in any kind of fun you may expect that person to pass out soon or that they have lost the main vital and life simply mummies and deadbeats on the trail I find that you people that want a sporting building have let the school committee take the drop on you Now you should go to work at once and put a quietus on this school house business You need a sporting building more than a school building there is too much means and methods being used to force education and learning into pray to die not a smile or a look of love and joy to be seen play upon the human coup tenance how wretched would man kind be But as good luck would have it we ere blessed with the privilege of exercising faculties for sport and fun which cheers and animates us amid all our troubles and makes us happy Now if you people of Greenville would get a move on you and build you a sport ing house ample enough for all kinds of sport you will never regret it and will wish that you had built it sooner It will surely improve your town and increase your trade much more than a school house it rill a great attraction to draw people to your town This school house bond issue will be a very unjust matter I do not believe it is right for people who have children to vote a tax on those that have none to school their children This we think is favorit ism and undemocratic but in the sporting house bond issue its will be universal everybody will be benefitted cither directly or indirectly all those
