of good eyes is uni vernally conceded in the abstract but in the concrete it is inadequate ly appreciated if one may judge from the lack of care taken to pre serve it The eye is a wonderful urban but singularly unfitted to cope with the tremendous strain which the present reading and writing puts upon it It may seem to be an extreme state mcnt it is safe to say that not one educated reading person in ten has a pair of eyes which can be perfect The most common defect is that is to say an irregular ity in the refracting part of the eye which interferes with correct focus ing of what is looked at What ought to be seen as a point is regis tered on the retina as a short line The result of this is that the myriads of points of which every object is composed are seen as lines and there is therefore a greater or lesser blurringCustom prevents the recognition of this imperfect vision when the defect is slight but the fault is seen at once when one looks through a glass so ground as to compensate for the irregularity in the eye for then the image is perceived with a distinctness and sharpness of that is a revelation This astigmatism is often the cause of headaches dizziness troubles which arc unexplain ed and uncured until the oculist cor rects the eye defect by properly fitted glasses It would be well if every child who is backward in school who shows a dislike of reading or who Greenville do ordain as follows That Concrete pavements on the Last side of Paradise stiect in the City of Greenville fur the following distances and in front of the lots owned by the following persons towit beginning with arid inrlud ing on the East side Judge Top C Jonson 520 feet W E Drake 136 II Williams 80 feet Vir jgil Ford So feet William Ennis 80 feet and Mrs W D Gates 126 feet shall be made and accordance with ordinances of the City of Greenville approved on the 4th day of November 1907 and on the 4 day of Jan 1909 and relating to the renewal and con struction of Pavements in the seems to be pending some antagonism between the committee and the skating and sporting house committee each trying to get the favor of the people and to have their project first recog nizedOn the 29th of March the school called a meeting of the people of Greenville and the school district in order to take some action towards remodeling and repairing the old dormitory school building and to make it a first class district school house This early action seems to have been taken on the ac count of a proposition and reccom mcndation that was made some time ago by the sporting house commit tee in regard to erecting a large building on Main street for all kinds of fun and sport and fearing that the sporting building might be built first and then educational interests for a school build ing would become dormant and perhaps further desires moral and intellectual training would become instinct the advo cates of the school building have been actively engaged in bringing their cause before the people at once in order to get the authority and franchise and to secure preem inence of title over the sporting peopleNow it will be remembered that the sporting house committee m their report reccommcnded a bond issue of 5000000 for the purpose of building a large public sporting house but no time was fixed for a vote on said bonds hence the mat ter was left open for future action of the people So the school com mittee seized upon the called a meeting on the zgth of March and ordered a bond issue to be submitted to the people to be voted on for school purposes and thereby gained priority that would put them in the lead with the they set the ijth day of as a day to vote upon the bond issue which will decide the contention now before the people If the school bond issue is carried a j ine ui iftc peopc fiVei cu dputiog building will likely be deferred some future action A vote on the school bond issue will be a test vote of the sentiment of the people so it is but a question of time until the matter will be decided No doubt there will be a determined effort and fight made by each faction to win At the meeting on the 29th of March quite a crowd was prominent citizens of both factions of Greenville and the school district were present and took active interest Speeches of some length were made on this occasion both pro and con by Professor Edward Poole and the Hon Ben Tooley Professor Edward Poole advocating the school building and educational interests the Hon Tooley advocat ing a sporting house and sporting interests Both speakers seemed to get the undivided attention of the were frequently applaud ed and cheered by the audience They both seemed to exhibit and exercise such magnetic persuasion of eloquence and argument that the sentiment and decision of the people seemed to be vacillating and un determined as to what would be for the best We shall not be able give more than a kind of brief and extract of delivered on that occasion by the distinguished gentlemen Professor Poole led in the discus sion in which he declared that he was and had always been a thor ough advocate of school houses and all sdhopl interests that he was an advocate of education and of moral and intellectual training irrespective of cost and that he was glad to see so many people of Greenville that he presumed had such noble per suasion That education was one of the greatest blessings of life and had done more to elevate the human family than anything else that has engaged human attention that mor al and intellectual education and training had lifted man up put of savagery and slavery and caused him to become an active thinking progressive and prosperous being That education had beautified the a display of science and sense so as to make life happy and enjoyable education is absolutely necessary and indispensable to ac complish the achievements that ren der life a blessing and worth living that the noblest the highest and most worthy wind Tuesday afternoon cyclone 3 oclock and twisted things around considerably in town The Equity Tobacco warehouse suffered the heaviest loss as the roofs on all three buildings were ripped up and one of the buildings was sprung about two feet The rain accom panying damaged the tobacco but this cannot yet be estimated AH loss is protected by insurance The roof of Buren Martins factory is missing from a fair sized spot with some loss to stock One ot the small tower columns on the court house was sprung from its position Many residences were damaged by roofs being ripped up Out in the
