JMust Preachers be Married A young pastor suggests that the marriage question may be an reason why young men hold off from the ministry not because they fear to enter the married state Ban inadequate salary but because they resent the tyrannous demand of the churches that the pastor must marry whatever the provision they make for his support The writer gives his experience in Success mag azine He has been three and one half years in the ministry and has held pastorates in New Jersey and JsTcw England At the outset of Ms ministerial life he was just 21 aid poor He was offered 350 a year and a donation for his first call but he was asked to come a a married man He was finally engaged conditionally lie suc ceded in pleasing his flock and was afterward engaged for a year Hut The committee while expressing appreciation of my ministry could not depart without a convert hint that the church would count it a favor if I would marry During all the succeeding months of my pastor ate this thought was kcptconstanlly before me If I made a call I was sure to be reminded of that empty parsonage that ought to be occu pied Then a field opening to me in New England it seemed wiser for me to conclude my New Jersey pastorate Here again I met the marriage question The church over which I am at present pastor wrote to me as follows The people are unani mous in calling you but make one condition i would like to have you bring a wife The church was at that lime giving a salary of per year and a donation I told the church that under such I could not consider the tofate After or less corres pondcnce had passed between us I uwagkengaccdttf provisionally the flVrniined at 4rvrv to extend me a call rto remain as pastor for another year f A committee accordingly called up on me stating that the church was well pleased with my work and had no criticism to make but that some of the people were anxious to know whether I intended to marry during the Nothing in the way of a Cough over coats there may be attention for some suggestions in regard to their construction which have been made by the London Lancet According to the high authority most over coats arc far heavier than they ought to be owing to a common de lusion that weight and warmth go together The truth is that the two qualities are usually opposed the peculiarities of weave and ma terial that cause weight to make cloth a good conductor of heal and therefore a poor pre server of it The heavy cloth too interferes with motion the producer of heat it can be carried around only by the expenditure of energy that could be put to better purposes and it is because it confined the of the body and so pro duces a slow poisoning- We also make a mistake the Lancet declares in choosing dark colors for our winter overcoats The artic animals teach the wisdom of following the contrary plan and our dark coats are not only less warm than light ones would be but they add to the general gloom of a season when every sinews Usually it is on the back of the wrist or on the instep but it may be on the outer side of the ankle or on theinner surface of the wrist The surface is rounded and of variable size usually perhaps when begins to attract the notice of the possessor about the size of a filbert gives a sensation of elasticity although often solid feeling like a piece of indiarubber but it may be so hard as to be mistaken for a bony tumor It is quite movable under the skin when the hand is at rest but when the fingers are contracted in case the ganglion is on the back of the lump becomes tense and fixed There are ordinarily no symptoms other than the dishgurement of the swelling although if subjected to continual slight injuries as happens especially when it is located on the instep it may become inflamed and quite painful The interior of the ganglion is not exactly but somewhat much like glycerin jelly The old time treatment of a gang lion on the back of the wrist was to tell the patient to make a fist then when the tumor was tense to hit it a blow with the flat of a heavy rupture it After that bandage vas wqrn for several days to maintain pressure on and so the little cyst from refilling This was the accepted plan of even the hest surgeons for ty or fifty years ago and was usual ly satisfactory but sometimes the patient so treated went into a gal loping consumption and died through without being awaic of it Altho1 Walter nor myself had ever visited there before we experienced no trouble in locating Halslcy the only store in town We informed our friends Henry C and Will H Halsley and Arthur Yearqtn that the object of our trip was to take a look at the Davis Cave just for the satisfaction of having seen the pit into which lonz Pen nington threw the body of his vic tim Simon Davis Our program was endorsed with a cheer of welcome Without any further ceremony each man was Kiven a gun and then on the com mand to march forward we began our walk to the scene of a once famous murder Having heard no explanation re garding these guns and seeing no need of such weapons 1 began to fear that the days of the Outlaws and Regulators had returned and 1 would soon meet the fate of Old Sisk the character in James Weirs Lonr Powers who some seventy five years ago was according to that author marched to this cave by the Society of Safety made to stand on is brink there shot and his boy allowed to fall into the hole into which he had helped throw a victim nut Weirs version of that feature of the incident was groundless and so were all my fears 1 soon learn ed that our guns were for no other purpose than that of shouting at rabbits We certainly used them along our march But I dare say the powder and lead consumed in crippled Davis Cave was soon reached for it is located only a half mile north of Haleys Mill and a quarter of a mile east of the Lower Greenville and Hopkinsville road In a field some 50 yards from the cave we saw the grave of the unfortunate Davis marked by an unlettered headstone and a youinfftalnult The moUjth of a cave is on a slop pj Cafe overlook Hollow M is shaded a few hickories and oaks one of which is a poison living remainder of the ve nomous deed enacted here This opening resembles the mouth of a than that of a cave It is about seven feet in diameter near the top and widens slightly with the depth which is some twenty feet A number of shelf rocks protrude from the wall and suggest the prob ability that this is a mere surface hole leading to a larger cave The murder of Davis by Penning ton was in its time one of the most extensively discussed subjects in Kentucky The great significance of the case lay in the fact that with Penningtons punishment the mis chief of the Outlaws ceased It saw the bcginiung ol a more efficient reign of law and consequently end ed the reign of Regulators James Weirs Lonz Powers published in 1850 is a romance based on the manoeuver of Lonz Pennington and RegulatorsToday Davis story is still the local traditions but some of the recent versions have changed it almost beyond recogni I shall try to give you an outline of this tragedy gathered principally from the records of the Pennington trial held in Hopkins vine in the spring of 1846 About the year 1839 Simon Davis an Irishman married and settled in the northern part of Christian coun near the Sinks of Little River Through his wife he came into of a small tract of land and property valued at about one thousand dollars Lonz Pennington who had been driven out of county by the Regulators lo Gated on a farm about a mile and a half from the home of Davis The two men became seemingly the best of friends On April 25 1845 the f Davis died The widower then de ceded to move to Illinois which in r c hale ear in I u U 4 ly observed with Prnnington and However only one man siv them leave together That was the last seen of Davis un til thirty three days after on Satur day July ii 1845 w en his body was discovered in this cave In the beginning Davis disap pearance aroused no suspicion for it was well known he intended to leave Besides Pennington report ed that he hud bought the farm from the widower who had as contem plated gone to Illinois But when the horse Davis was supposed to have ridden to his new home was discovered in a thicket belonging to Shuffle suspicion aroused anti a search for the body was made In the meantime Lon Penning ton was becoming more an object of distrust The neigh bors of Davis determined to find Lonz and also a man by the name of Ben F Cisncy and a searching party for that purpose In a day or two Cisney was located and held in captivity the Regu lators who finally forced him into a confession He revealed the start ling tact that Pennington killed Davis and then threw the body into the cave while he took no part in the murder except that of holding the horses some distance from the place An investigation was immediately The body had lodged on of projecting ledges about twelve feet from the top It was there discov ered by Wiley Robinson who was the first of the patty to descend It was half covered with leaves and small sticks The only sign of vio lence was a broken skull then turned over to the county authorities who placed him in jail A few weeks later he made his escape and as far as I know was never again seen In the meantime the community made every effort to locate Lonz Pennington but without success A reward of 500 was offered by Gov John J Crittendcn and an 500 by private contributions Dr R Bourland of Ballard county felt confident from the in formation he received through his brother then visiting him from Tex as that Pennington was in the Lone Star State The Doctor had pre iously decided to make a trip to Texas His leaving therefore arous
