Tuberculosis To the casual observer it may seem strange that physicians often find it so difficult to determine whether a patient is or not suffering from consumption The cough the enunciation the hectic fever and the night sweats to be suffic iently characteristic of the disease to render Its recognition easy even to the nonmedical person And so indeed it is ordinarily in these but it is very dif ferent at the begining Every one knows that the earlier treatment is begun the more likely is it to be successful It is extremely therefore to be able to detect the very beginnings of consumption while yet the person is apparently in almost perfect here lies the difficulty If there is no cough no hectic flpsht no undue perspiration at nightt if of tie ex a car o i4v r l MW methods of detecting the disease iti its incipiency have been devised and one at least of them promises to be o great practical utility These methods all consist m the use of tuberculin but they differ in the mode of application of this sdb stance It has been known for years that the ihjection of will be followed if the subject is tuberculous by symptoms of ie action that is by fever headache pains in the bones and other signs of malaise But this method has never found favor physicians generally because of the belief that it is dangerous It was very dan gerous as formerly used large dose s were injected and the reaction that followed was at times very severe and in certain cases it was known to have rekindled the disease in per sons in whom it had become and who were practically cured It was also feared by some that the disease might be caused in one of weak resisting powers by inoculation with the tuberculin These dangers do not however exist now that the substance is used in very small and in a form containing as it only the glycerin extract of the tuberclebacilli and never the bacilli themselves Nevertheless other more simple methods have now been devised and are used in preference to the injections of form er days These methods will be described in a future article THE RECORD Soc per year Constipation B cd yrwt withAI i haTe the same effect can but find ray to health j with j
