Banks Considering Plan in Vogue in Cities Some Believe It Would ray While I Others Think the Number of Banks Too Small J ALL AGREE ON ITS BENEFITS A clearing house association simi lar to the ones la Now York Chica go St Louis and Louisville Is be ing advocated by some of tho bank ers In Paducah The savings In timo and money to tho banks they think would Justify such air association The presidents of tho several banks In the city ore divided in their opinions as to the advisability of a clearing house association It Is pointed out by those who do not fa vor tho association that the city la not largo enough to support a clear- Ing house and that the checks han dled by the banks combined would not be sufficient to warrant the expense of supporting an association In the minds of tho bankers whd favor tho project the saying to tho banks from throwing the burden ot collecting the checks on tho customers would alone justlty an associ ation At present because the banku act separately it Is tho custom to bear tho expense of collecting tho checks of their customers As the city grows this becomes a real burden on tho banks In the larger cities tho association places the expense ot collecting checks on the customers where It belongs because they havo the power through an association to enforce the rule among all tho banks Where no association exists it is Impossible to remedy tho condition Again every Jay under the pres lent arrangement the clerks from each bank have to visit every other bank to exchange checks and balancer hlMtItsand exchange checks and make their balances with too clearing house which In turn would settle with tho banks They lose much valuablo time at present from having to visit each bank A number of other advantages would accrue from an association but tho principal ones are the sav ing In making the customers pay exchange and the cost of collecting their checks and tho general advant ago which would result from the banks acting in unison In tho present attitude of tho bankers It Is Im probable that the clearing house will be realized without hard work by those who favor the Idea Probably tho principal objection to tho cleaving house Is the effect it would have on the clearings of the banks which have given Paducah a good financial name from their size Many checks now Included In the bank clearings as reported by tho banks every week could not bo accepted in a clearing house roportandt the consequence would be that tho total for the year would decrease sharply Few cities of the size of Paducah In the county have had bet
