JY Care of farm Machinery 1 1r It is estimated that the machin rcrtand tools necessary to operate a farm of average size represent an outlay of from one to three thousand dollars This initial out lay is heavy but when the long service and economy of operation due to their use is considered the possession of good tools must be considered the best of economy However unless given good care and their period of service ex tended to a maximum their fre quent replacement will be a great factor in destroying all profits from the farm The question of how long any machine ought to give goodserv ice can of course be answered only in a general way A binder with average crops of 50 to 100 acres ought to last 20 to 30 years or longer In that time but 1000 to 3000 acres would be harvested and it is certainlyI not unreason able to expect that much from a machine A rood farm vagon ought to last 50 years a steel rot ler almost a lifetime a grain drill 25 years a hay rake and hay ted der 25 years andn disk harrow 15 years What is the secrets of getting this long service from ma chinery Shelter and attention Any building which will keep out rain quid snow will serve for storing tools Tobacco barns stock barns and even temporary straw sheds will answer However the question of convenience e yin storing and getting tools out ii- I is IJ important for when particularly inconvenient it is a great tempta tion to leave out tools during aI Busy sers n until they become ruji ed andweather beaten A j builcifeg especially for this purpose ife by far most convenient and wi lPV for itself in a vervi few yearsIt should be built at a convenien place on the farm where drainage is good andshould be rain snow and chickentight The arrangement should be such that tools can be removed and put back without an great difficultyr largerdoors will probably be found most t convenient One corner should be partitionedoff for a workshop and storing small tools andrepairs When through using a tool put it away promptly even if to be usedagain in a few days It will quickly rust if left out and rust wears out tools much faster than use Every effort should be made to protect and prevent tools from rusting will certainly rust under this dirt and wood will soften an decay When paint becomes worn on machinery it should be renew ed thus adding not only to the life of the tool but greatly to its appearance Wagons especially should be painted frequently During the winter it is an ex cellent plan to go over all machinery very carefully and put in per fect repair If parts are worn iit will be best to order new parts to be used in case of breakage during the busy season See that all of holes are cleaned out and that ev cry bearing receives oil In gen event every little attention given to details will mean just that much time saved when the tool is in use and time is so valuable When in use the utmost care should be given to proper lubri cation as upon this feature de pends to a great extent the county and a Sophmore at State University Lexington has writ ten a poem in answer to Rudyard Kiplings The Female of the Species which when published in the college paper won such fame that it is with pleasure that we reproduce it in these columns Is the male more true and noble Freed from females gentle wiles Is he happier by her absence- Is he lonlier for her smile Does she cause his feet to stumble- Is her love a poisoned dart Doth she nourish vengeance solely In the warm blood of her heart Does she flee and leave her offspring When the dangers gather round Doth she strike save to defend them Is she not by instinct bound Hath she borne none of his burdens Never cheered his saddened heart Never borne her share of sorrows Never forced his bends apart Hath she nothing good ber given Hath the world of her no need sever given hope and counsel Never done a golden deed portiondgave Is her soul bent on destruction Hath she no desire to save If this were true forbid her suffrage Oer her face then draw the veil For the female of the species- Is more deadly than the male Doom her to eternal slavery Bind her with an iron band Yoke her with the heathen customs Send her wandering land to land IThen the male may rest in quiet Proudly view his fading race 1For no sons him should come after None may take the fathers place Are the sins of ceaseless nagging JCourage that convictions loan And the instand wild contentions Restricted to females done If she hath such vile influence Why do men of honored name Often give the femalejcredit For their glory and their fame By the law of abstract justice Man with God could never live Heart the judge and love the sovereign These alone her answers give Shame on him who hnrii of woman Would besmirch her sacredjnauie And to place on all President Tafts vetoes of the farmers free list and of the down ward revision of the wool tariff schedules only serve to throw in to sharp definition the impressive lesson of Democratic constructiveness as exemplified at the present session of Congress The credit of achievement and the responsibility of obstruction are placed exactly where they belong Under the handicap of n Republican President lindof a Republican Senate the Democratic House of Representatives has car ried throught an extensive and efficient program of relief to the public Backed by the Nation it has even beaten down some of the Senate barriers has imposed terms conditions on the garrison of 4Jund stronghold of reaction has victory for reciprocity after it had been repudiated by the last Republican Congress has passed the free list bill the wool bill the cotton bill the Statehood bill the direct election of Senators resolu tion besides inaugurating far reaching retrenchments and curb ing the trusts by investigations that have done more to check law less monopoly than has any other bit or bridle tried in the lat twenty years But now between the Democ racy and the people to whom it brings rescue rises another fort ress of privilege as in the battle of Germantown during the Revo lution a single stone house gar risoned by a company of two of British stood between Washington and the capture of Philadelphia That fort is the Wnite House It is there that Mr Taft wielding the veto power waves signals of encouragement to the standpatters of the Senate the Paynes Cannons and Dab ells of the House and uses the au neulralcize the splendid campaign of Dem ocratic progressiveness It will not be neutralized By his reactionary vetoes and the threat of other reactionary vetoes and the threat of other reactionary vetoes to come Mr Taft only opens the way to a decisive mapping out of a Democrat ic triumph greater than that of 1910 The remedy for construction menaced by obstruction is militancy The Democratic worker of 1911 balked of the just objects for which he works becomes the soldier of 1912 as he was the sol dier in 1910 The hosts which won the nation wide Democratic victory last year will be reinforced next year by a multitude of Republicans who have waited and watched reserv inc decision until they shouldsee whether the Republican crash of 1910 had taught their party anv statesmanship whether Mr Taft had profited by that severe ex perience These sentinels on the watchtowers of Republican politics nett have their answer They have seen relief to the country near They have seen it brought bv Democratic hands They have yen President Taft interpose hit vetoes between the givers and the recipientsThey also seen that in the struggle of the past months in Congress all the retrogressive elements all the confusing ele ments all the elements that fought against downward tariffrevision andother measures of progress andwhen driven to bay haggled for any vantagepoint that might tell against the people and for the privileged interests were Repub lican The inevitable outcome of such a situation is to exclude the Republican party from the consideration of all who are in sympathy with progressive tendencies to eliminate the Republican party from further toleration by those I who have condoned its misdeeds and hoped against hope that it Nine teen twelve will be the year of the revolt from that party of that ex tnsive following who while not thickandthin party men are bound tighter by the ordinary tie of party affiliation than that class generically described as indepen dent voters usually are Thus we have a threefold set of condItions 1 The Democracy solidified and strengthened during the in terval between 1910 and 1912 2 The independent oters who contributed much to the Democratic success of last year con firmed in their faith by the record of Democratic achievement in 1911 3 The warp and woof of tli Republican party disintegrated by the disaffection of those Republi cans who have held their judg ment in abeyance until now but who have definitely come to the conclusion that the people have nothing to expect from the Re publican party A situation made of such com ponent parts presupposes only one result What that result will be is shown by the steady and in exorable gathering of the Demo cratic tidal wave of
