Serum The Kentucky Experiment Station is sending out a timely cir cular in relation to hog cholera serum The disease is prevalent in some parts of the State and the losses every year because of its inroads are heavy Some years ago the United States Bureau of Animal Industry began experimenting in tho effort to discover a vaccination process for the prevention of swine chol era Improvements have been made in the treatment at intervals and the claim iis now tirade for it that it is generally efficacious The last Kentucky Legislature made an appropriation of 2000 to erect a laboratory and building at the Experiment Station at Lex ington for the manufacture of the serum While the work is not being carried on extensively be cause of the smallness of the furd appropriated the station has begun the manufacture of the article and according to the circular has prepared upwards of 6000 doses The serum is tested be fore being sent out from the laboratory and is sold at the cost of production Whenever a requestI- S made the Experiment Station will if possible send experienced men to vaccinate hogs and there will be no charge of this service Experience it is stated is required to administer the serum properlyThe Station circular gives some material facts as to dosage and as to methods of up plying the treatment Owners of swine herds who have to deal with- thel cholera problem willserve heir own interests by taking advantages of the assistance which- s offered by the Experiment Sta ion The frequent outbreaks of cholera are the most serious trouble with which the hog raiser has to contend The disease has paused heavy losses to farmers from time immemorial and ha constituted perpetual menace to he swine industry There seems o be no doubt that the serum treatment supplies the best known ucthod of handling the disease It has been widely tested at the various experiment stations and on the farms Heretofore it has lot been easily accessible to Kentucky formers and its manufacture at the State Experiment Sta ion will be a substantial benefit Baby wont suffer five minutes with croup ifou apply Dr Chorans Electric Oil at once It lets like magic m Automobiles and Highways Mr Linthicum of Maryland ntroduced in the last Congress a sill to establish a Federal High vayst Commission whichshould urge cooperation und joint action etween the States and the Federal aovernment in constructing high ways and regulating automobile travel Unmistakably the pres ent situation is unsatisfactory The automobile is largely an in terstate performer A State whichj has comparatively few au tomobiles itself may have to Ikeep up roads which are being battered to pieces by the automobiles of neighboring States New Hamp hire is an instance The State is poor its soil is such that roads ire expensive to maintain and the number of foreign automobiles engaged in knocking these roads to pieces is large Some localities meet this unfair predicament by exacting tolls which is perhaps reasonable as a temporary device Undoubtedly however this is one of the matters in Which closerI co operation is desirable Mr Linthicums bill contains uniidea which ought to bear fruit Governments will ultimately go in protecting tin consumer can not be foretold but it can safely be said that for a long time we shall be moving however slowly in the direction of more protection First must come protection to health The The decision of the Supreme Court on the patentmedicine clause in the Pure Food Law makes it necessary to amend that law next winter After health comes the question of forbidding branding which is intended to givi an impression of a more expensive or desirable ingredient than is actually contained As an example of this may be given the fact that certain companies whichsellI compounds containing a largf amount of borax naturally feel aggrieved about those which with practically no borax call their products by some name indicating that they are borated The man ufacturers of actual borax is con tained Doubtless we shall come some time to a condition of the public mind in which no fraudu lent claim is permitted about in gredients whether or not the prod uct pledges was the raid upon the taxpnyersorganized I by Governor Willson to cover upII his extravagance and carried into effect under his orders by hisI Boardof Equalization Having I wasted more than one quarter of aii million dollars of the peoples money in foolishly exploiting the State militia he paid the piper by increasing the taxable value of farm lands in two years 92029 43100 The burden as usual fellupon the farmers the very people to whom Judge ORear is now appealing for help although Governor Willsons administration which was responsible for this increase meets with Judge ORears hearty commendation Governor McUreary asked Judo ORear the direct question if he approved this raise of nearly one hundred million dollars on the farm lands of the State and it must be said to Judge ORears credit that he was frank enough to admit that he did approve of it tie said that his politicaladvisers had told him that it would be a- cliypgerpgj thing to endorse but that ho thought it was lawful and and that he believed the Republi can ollicjals acted honestly under their oath of office It logically follows that if Judge ORear is elected Governor and runs the State in debt as all his Republican predecessors have lone he will follow Governor Willsons method of emptying the pockets of the farmers because his Board of Equalization has the authority under the law to put any burden on them that is necessary to support the extravagances of the administration The ExConfederates for Govern or McCreary When Augustus E Willson ran for Governor he made a great parade of the fact that some of the Confederate soldiers were for him and he never tired of telling how gratefulI he was to these brave defenders of the lost cause for their support There were some few Confederates who for per sonal reasons voted for Willson but they have lived to regret it as has every other Democrat who trusted in Republican promises or pledges At the last session of the Legislature a bill was passed to erect a monument to Jefferson Davis who was born in Kentucky and who has won immortality as President of the Confederacy Although the Democrats at the session be fore had voted 250000 for the erection of a monument to Abra ham Lincoln because he too was a Iventuckian Governor Villson forgetting the Confederates had oeen for him vetoed their meas ure and threw it back in the faces of its supporters Governor McCreary is not run ning for oflice on his record as a Confederate soldier but he served during the war under the stars and bars and thousands of his old comrads attest his courage and fidelity Lien if he did not have a claim that a brother in arms al sunportehim because they remember the treachery of Governor Willson and they have learned that the promises of Republican politicians are made only to be broken Some folks rise up enrlami go hunting trouble only to climb a tree when theyfind him Another Lemon Drawn Mrs Nepoleone the best dressed woman at Newport during improving effects of rood blood in any kind of live stock are as sure as day Young animals of superior character in the community mark the location of every sire of unusual merit Wherever there are many wellbred sires and possibly some herds of equally ex cellent females the number of highclass young stock is certain to be correspondingly large So true is this that one can judge accurately of the progressivenessof any community or of any stock- man by noting the character of stock in the fields Although the fact that blood will tell is clearly demonstrated On thousands of farms the lesson is majoritvjf feeds accidents and many other i ifluences are blamed by unsuccessful stockmen for trouble is more often with the ancestry A few men waste good blood by giv iig it poor care but for every one that does so there are a hundred who waste good care on stock of inferior breeding There are many men who have the ability and skill to handle superior pure bred stock successfully but who have not the courage to try Generally they cannot resist the impulse to secure at least a sire of considerable excelledce so that their grade stock reflects their longing for good blood The man who can care for grade stock so as to make it thrive at its best need not hesitate to acquire purebred stock What good blood will do for others it will do for him Four years ago for ex ample a champion ram and some ewes of similar breed type and excellence were taken to u farm in a southern state It was an experiment but the grade sheep didv well there so there was faith that pedigreedsheep would thrive This year the Iambs from this Hock ore the equal of highclass iimported lambs A few years ago an Illinois farmer with some experience with hogs made selec tions of the best blood his chosen breed afforded with the result that now he is a formidable factor in any showing he enters There are other swine breeders in Illi nois and neighboring states whose experience and success are very similar Many of the herds of cattle and studs of horses that now stand preeminent for the excel lence of their young stock were founded in a small way on faith that rood blood carefully mated I and well cared for will tell on suc ceeding generations A lifetime spent breeding animals from in ferior stock will not gain one small fraction of the success that attends a few years of work built on the best foundation stock Only a few men stand at the top in animal breeding Allof them got there the same wayby faith that blood will tell Business Stationery Something new in the way of business
