Mallsg a Waning fight All doubt of Democratic success can be dispelled by reading tine newspaper reports of Ollie James triumphant journey through the State Wherever is has gone immense crowds have greeted him and the enthusiasm is greater than has been aroused to Mr James magnetic personality although he is r iiakr with all classes It fe caused by tile desire of the Demo crats tl show by their presence that they are goins to send the United States Senate a man who votes exactly opposite to Senatoi Bradley They recognize that om vote in the Senate may mean thf control of that body so closely are the parties divided It was not necessary for the Democrat speakers to raise National issuer in this fight The voters them selves are asking questions about the tariff and the trusts and the have made this great issue a feat ure of this campaign All the ef forts of Judge OKear to corifint this contest to State matters have only convinced them that the Re publican party wants to change the subject because it cannot face the people on its record in Congress in the White House The Legislators to be chosen in November will not only elect a Senator next January but nine teen of the State Senators will hold over for two years andwill vote for Bradleys successor in 1914 It concerns a Governorship andall the State offices two United States Senatorships and will have an influence on the elec tion of a President next year That is why Champ Clark speak er of the House Oscar Under wood the Floor Leader Governor Marshall of Indiana William J Bryan andall the great National figures are terdering their support to the Kentucky Democrats They know how vital it is to success in the nation that Kentucky should vote right this year Eloquent as Ollie James is always upon ths stump he has cholera in Kentucky are enormous and in fact severe as a serious handicap to the swine industry Many people prefer not to attempt to raise hogs rather than incur the danger from cholera same condition has for many I years prevailed through the cntir country As a result the U S Bureau of Animal Industry began some years ago to experiment with the view ot producing a vaccint process for tile prevention of this disease The treatment has improved from time to time until it may now be said to have passed the experimental stage Many of the states have takes this work on their own account and have special laboratories for the production of the serum ai preprinting in some cases as much 25000 to maintain the work The methods outlined by the Bu reau of Animal Industry have iin the main been followed The last Legislature gave the Department of Animal Husbandr the Kentucky Experiment Station 2000 with which to erect ta laboratory and buildings secur equipment and employ competent supervision for the manufactur this serum While this appro priation was too small to permit the work being carried on eaten siveiy the Experiment Station begun the manufacture of the serum and up to the present time has prepared upwards of 0000 doses work done has been highl satisfactory All serum is tested before leaving the laboratory an sold at the cost of production which price is nixed by law at two cents per cubic centimeter Experience is required to ad minister the serum properly The dosage of serum is as follows 1 cc per pound weight up to 10 pounds 10 cc for all sizes between 10 to 20 pounds 20 cc for all sizes between 20 and 50 pounds 30 cc for 75 pounds or mor than 50 pounds 40 cc for 100 pounds or more than 75 pounds 50 cc for 150 pounds or morn than 100 pounds GO cc for 200 pounds or more than 150 pounds 70 cc for 250 pounds or mor than 200 pounds 80 cc for 400 pounds or mor than 300 pounds 100 cc for more than 40 poundsThere are two methods of immunizing an animal the Serum Alone and the Serum Simultan eous The former is used when the disease has already entered ia herd and also when cholera exist on adjoining farms or fields and consists as the name suggests of inoculating the animal with serun aloneIn the Serum Simultaneou methods a small amount of blood drawn from a hog sick with chol era is injected at the same time as the protective serum The in fective serum The two injection are made in the opposite thighs The infection thus artificially induced results in immunity for at least C months and perhaps for life This method is used whet cholera does not exist in the lien or in the immediate vicinity The reults of both methods ar the same though if the Scrim Alone method were used withou a subsequent exposure to the disease the immunity would no last longer than two months in the majority of cases while on tin other hand if infection is present the Serum Alone method cause more lasting immunity generall being considered permanent The Serum Simultaneous Moth od is attended with some danger but when properly used give more regular results than th Scrum Alone for the disease ha often made considerable progres before the owner is aware of it If treated shortly after being ex- posed1 1all loss can be eliminate by the Serum Alone method Whenever possible experience men are sent out by the Experi ment Station to vaccinate hog without are growing in abundance on a number of Montgomery county farms which is a direct violation of Section 200 of the Kentucky Statutes We are sure this Statute which is conceded to be a wise and necessary one is being violated unintentionally but as the nonobserv ance of it may cause great damage to our county we desire to call the attention of our farmers to this law which is as follows- It shall be the duty of every person or persons and of every corporation hold ill lands in this Commonwealth either by lease or otherwise on which Canada thistles or weed commonly known as Canada thistles may be growing to cut the saute so as to prevent such weeds or thistles from going to seed and the seed of same from ripening Any person or persons or corporation as aforesaid who s shall or may have land as aforesaid in this Commonwealthand who shall knowingly neglect or refuse to complwith the provisions of this net shall forfeit and pay a line of live dollars recoverable beforet Jiny justice of the peace or by indictment in the Circuit Courts of the State We have heard several citizens say they intended to pay the brick street assessment before October 20 or would do so next year and as it seems to be the general impression that this can be done we want to again call attention to the fact that the privilege of paying cash must be exercised before October 20 or it cannot be paid for ten years We are sure all will agree with us that it would be unwise to permit a lien to be placed on property that cannot be removed for ten years If you havent the ready money borrow it and pay this assessment and you can then pay the loan off us soon as you are able i The last issue of the Advance Sheets of the Kentucky Reports f I The Mt Sterling National BanK Capital 50000 Surplus for Augustus E Willson for Governor In all parts of the State there were de fections from the Democratic ranks and the campaign had hard ly started before the situation be came serious Conditions this year are entirely different The Democrats are thoroughly aroused confident and enthusiastic the Republicans are divided into factions discouraged and disorganized All of the IdI party leaders who gave spirit and character to the Democracy in theI past are back in the ranks againI taking their places with the boys in the trenches and asking no rec ognition except the right to vote andwork for the success of the ticket This is as significant as it is gratifying It means thatI thousands of those who in other years kept aloof from the party because they differed with it onI some question of remainder beirg sold in the open market Mr Haggin is the largest pro ducer of burley tobacco in Ken tucky and he pledges to pool the production of his farm for the next ten years As a result of Mr Haggins ac tion this years crop in the three States will probably be pooled Definite action on this question however will not be taken until the board meets in October Prices For farm Products Interesting comparisons mark the initial statistics of present farm prices According to the state ments just compiled farmers are receiving higher prices than prac tically a year ago for their prod so many that it is well nigh immune from any kind of temporary serious depression The reader need only picture what has happened in the last decade to see what should occur in the next twenty years Fore casts and estimates are of no value It is enough that conditions are as they are The investment of the funds of individual investors in wellestablished and growing enterprises in Kentucky offer exceptional opportunities the days of wild promoting and exploitations are past the present opportu nities are in enterprises where the affairs are directed by mien of con servatism intelligence and
