Ky held in the County Court Room on April 24 for the purpose of lending assist ance to the Brick Street Commis sion in their recommendation to the City Council on the bid sub mitted for paving certain streets of the city This meeting was called to order by Dr W R Thompson Upon motion duly made second ed and unanimously adopted Mr H It Prewitt was elected Temporary Chairman of the meeting and W C Hamilton Secretary The Chair declared the meetinir open for consideration of the bid for paving the streets Dr W R Thompson and Mr C C Chenault of the Committee on Street paving presented the bid together with their view say ing that they had labored under the impression that the work could be done for 2 per square yard but that the streets should be paved Mr Chenault further saying that the price proposed in the bid of 218 was not suchan increase as would mare him hesi tate to pave in front of his property It was further suggested by Mr Chenault that certain persons owning property claimed the right of superintending the work and that he as an individual would suggest that the Committee be dis charged and a new Committee up pointed from these property owir ersThis idea met the favor of Mr C K Oldham who moed the discharge of theCornmiltee seconded by W R Thompson mind on sub mission to the house prevailed Motion was then made that a new Committee be appointed to consist of Messrs U C Chenault Jnof W Wade I F Tabb W S Lloydand A B Oldham This motion receiving a prompt second n submission was unanimously adoptedIt then proposed that the sense of the property owners be laken as to paving in front of their property and the streets coy ered by the bid It was the un animous sense of the property owners present that the streets be pavedThe sense of the meeting as a whole was then inquired as to paving the streets covered by the bid It was the unanimous expression that the streets be paved The newly appointed Committee was instructed to make recom mendation to the City Council consistent with the general expression of the property owners and citizens present The meeting then adjourned H R PUEWITT Clint Attest W C HAMILTON Sec The meeting was an enthusiastic one for brick streets The differ ence in Jprice for paving the streets of this city ns comparedwith other towns and cities is accounted for by the extra cost in freight rate and getting materials necessary to the work delivered Expressions have been sought from both local and foreign contractors as to the reasonableness of the bid submitted Claim was made that it couldnot be reasonably expected better that the bid should be accepted Nothing would add moro to the city in the way of enhancing the value of property beautifying and making more sanitary than paving the streets as well as it being an economical undertaking I15suits now 11 24 at Guthries diL ROLL Of HONOR Mt Sterling Graded Common School Shows Up Well for Month Ending April 14 FIUST GRADE Charles Jones Harran Roonev a Bluegrass farm is but one of many indications of the growing impor tance of the poultry industry in Kentucky In former years the titan of the house on the average farm seldom troubled his mind about poultry except on such occasions as the old womans chickens invaded the wheat field or showed a disposition to render unnecessary assist ance during the process of corn I planting On such occasions the honest fanner probably cast a few clods at the invaders or set the dog on thorn and then promptly forgot that there was a chicken on earth until he chanced to encoun ter one for his Sunday dinner He was thoroughly content to leave the poultry business to the women folks The women folksare still raising chickens in Kentucky but a large number of men who form erly did not think the poultry business worth while have seen a great light Thousands of farmers in Missouri never woke up to the possibilities of poultry raising until the great Worlds hair was held in St Louis Then a lot of them went back home and began to help the women folks train up Light Brahmas and Buff Co chins and Black Minorcas in the they should Itway go good business and the averageII Missourian doesnt have to be shown when it comes down to a question of poultry profits Missouris egg crop alone now is worth twentyodd million dollars annually The production is get ting bigger every year and it is Missouris proud boast that in poultry she is preeminent Here in Kentucky we still think so little of the poultry industry that we do not gather any statist ics about it Nevertheless it is a great and growing business and the product of the poultry farms in the aggregate is enormous After a while the Federal Con sus Bureau will tell us how many chickens we had per capita in 1910 and the number of eggs that were on hand when the enumerators called It will also tellus what we mire doing in the turkey line and withrespect to ducks geese mold all that sort of thing The compilation will be highly enlightening and no doubt there are many who will be surprised at its magnitude In feet there are a lot of us who havent reached the wakingup stage and need to be shown as were the Missouri farmers affairs History proves that in all countries where agriculture has prosered all other industries have prospered and where agriculture has declined all other industries have declined therefore the promotion of agri culture means the promotion of manufacturing transportation and commercial interests and the inter ests of the people engaged therein Agriculture does not depend upon other industries for prosperity but other industries depend upon agri culture as the basis of their pros perity The prosperit that has been enjoyed by the people of the country in recent years has been Iprimarily due to the magnificent crops the farmers of the country have produced Any effort that results in an increased crop pro duction increases the prosperity of all the people The forty million people living upon the farms of the country are entitled to as great recognition in tariff and other leg islation as an equal number en gaged in nonproductive industries It is one of the objects of make no mistake in pursuing that policy Every man has a moral andshould have a legal right to rest on Sunday The devil has used the fact that the Sabbath was made for man and not man for the Sabbath to put many a burden upon Ulan And why 1 Sim ply to gratify some selfish desire of some favorite coadjutor and victim as well of Mr Devil whom his Satanic majesty is preparing to give a hot time after said victim has shuffled off this mortal coil and gone to join in sulphurous flames the restless shade of dear Hamlets paternal ancestor The efforts of our Uncle Samuels postal employ es to secure Sunday closing in the large postoffices of the country seem likely to meet with success No business which tends to sec ularize the Sabbath and which ser iously interferes with mans inalienable right to rest and to worship should receive any sort of sanction by a civilized and Christ ian people The average business man finds but too little time for mentalrest and culture and thoughts of God and the hereafter during the six days which he de votes to strenuous chasing of the dollar and should not be deprived his one day for muchneeded mental and physical rest and soul expansion Society owes it to it self to protect itself against the selfishsecularizing of the Sabbath by human hogs and the thought lessly curious who demand their Sunday mail Mans experience as well as the moral law declares and emphasizes the unwisdom of laboring seven days in the weekrrhe violation of either moral or physical law soon or late brings upon the vio lator condign punishment To violate these laws willfully is both foolish and sinful In the matter of closing the mails on Sunday the reliirious press of course favors the move ment and it is thought that there will be national legislation favoring it Detroit for example ii- t is city we are told which finds its 100000 population willing to sus pend curiosity one day in the week is to what the mails are to bring hem The Continent Chicago seems to imply that curiosity timid riot necessity is at the basis of the hardships of the postal clerks It aas this to say One need make no long or ex tensive investigation to discover that a large proportion of those who apply at carrier oflices for mailon Sunday receive none while probably not one in a thousand is in genuine need of receiving his letters twentyfour hours in advance of the weekdav delivery Jhristian people everywhere have an unescapable responsibility in this situation They shouldnot only refrain from joining the num ber whoso heedlessness works in justice but they should promptly indicate to sheir postmaster that they have no desire to avail them selves of the privilege Postmas ters are quite so desirious as anyone to avoid Sunday work if they can be supported by
