Rodriguez used It as a private office His desk was on their right between two windows overlooking the same pleasant little garden which was vis ible from the suite of tiny drawing rooms farther along The safe a formidable looking receptacle of black enameled steel stood at their left closed and locked Tho remaining wail space of the room was given over to oak cabinets evidently a storage place for the less Important legation papersHas any one besides yourself been In this room today Mr Grimm In quired Not a soul Senor was the reply Mr Grimm went over and examined time windows They were boob locked ins + je and there were ao marks of sap ort on the sills They are just an I left tliosn last night explained Senor Rodriguez I have not touched them today And theres only one door mused Mr Grimm meaning that by which they had entered So it would ap pear that whoever was here last night entered through that room Very well lie walked around the room once opening and shutting the doors of tho cabinets as he passed and finally paused In front of the safe A brief examination of time nickeled dial and handle and of the enameled edges of the heavy doors satisfied him that no force had been employed the safe hud merely been unlocked Where upon he sat himself down crosslegged on the floor In front of It What are the first and second fig ures of the combination he asked Thirtysix then back to ten Mr Grimm set the dial at thirtysix and then with his ear pressed closely against the polished door turned the The Lcck on This Private Compart llmeet at the Top Ila Broken 1 r i dial slowly back Senor Rodriguez stood looking on helplessly but none the less intently The pointer read ten then nine eight seven five Mr Grimm gazed at It thoughtfully after which he did It all over again placidly and without haste Now well look Inside please he requested rising Senor Rodriguez unlocked the safe the while Mr Grimm respectfully turned his eyes away then pulled the door wide open The books had been piled one on top of another and thrust Into various pigeon holes at the top Mr Grimm understood that this disor tier was the result of making room at the bottom for the bulk of gold and asked no questions Instead he sat down upon the floor again The lock on this private com partment at the top Is broken he remarked after a moment- SI Senor the diplomatist agreed Evidently the robbers were not con tent with only fifty thousand dollars In goldthey Imagined that some thing else of value was hidden there Was there asked Mr Grimm naively lie didnt look around Nothing of monetary value tho senor explained There were some important state papers In therethey- are there yetbut no money None of the papers was stolen No Senor There were only nine packetsthey are there yet Contents nil right Yes I personally looked them over Mr Grimm drew out the packets of papers one by one They were all unsealed save the last When he reached for that Senor Rodriguez made a quick Involuntary motion toward It with his hand This ones sealed commented Mr Grimm It doesnt happen that you opened It and sealed It again Senor Rodriguez stood staring at him blankly fur a moment then some sudden apprehension was aroused for a startled look came Into his eyes and again he readied for the packet Dlos mlo he exclaimed let mo see Senor Going to open It asked Mr GrimmYes Senor I had not thought of It beforeMr Grimm rose and walked over to the window where the light was bet ter He scrutinized the sealed packet closely There were three red splotches of wax upon It each im pressed with the legation seal the en velope was without marks otherwise He turned and twisted it aimlessly and peered curiously at the various seals after which he handed it to tho frankly impatient diplomatist Senor Rodriguez opened It with nervous twitching fingers Mr Grimm had turned toward the safe again but he heard the crackle of parchment as some document was drawn out of tho envelope and then came a deep sigh of relief Having ftitlsfled his sudden fears fir the safety of the paper what ever it was the senor placed It in an other envelope and sealed It again with elaborate care Mr Grimm dropped into the swivel dmir at tho deskSenor ho Inquired pleasantly your daughter and Miss Thorno were In this room yesterday afternoon Yes replied the diplomatist as It surprised at the question What time please About three oclock They were going out driving Why And Just where please did you find that handkerchief continued Mr Grimm Handkerchief repeated the diplomatist You mean Miss Themes handkerchief He paused and regarded Mr Grimm keenly Senor what am I to understand from that questionIt plain enough replied Mr Grimm Where did you find that handkerchief There was silence for an Instant In this room Yes replied Senor Rodriguez at lastNear the safe Mr Grimm per sistedYes came tho slow reply again Just here and he Indicated a spot a little to the left of the safe And when did you find It Yester day afternoon 7 Last night This morn- Ing This morning and without any apparent reason the diplomatists face turned deathly white But SenorSenor you are mis taken There can be nothing A woman Two hundred pounds of goldi Senor Mr Grimm was still pleasant about It his curiosity was absolutely Imper sonal his eyes grown listless again were turned straight Into tho others faceIf that handkerchief had been there last night Sepor he resumed quietly wouldnt you have noticed It when you placed the gold in the safe Senor Rodriguez stared at him a long time 1 dont know he said at last He dropped back Into a chair with his face In his hands Senor he burst outt suddenly impetuously after a ino i L ment II tUb gold is not recovered tam ruined You understand that bet ter than I can tell you Its the kind of thing that could not be explained to my government He rose suddenly and faced the impassive young man with merciless determination in his taco You must find that gold Senor he said No matter who may bewho may luffer inquired Mr Grimm Find the gold Senor Very well commented Mr Grimm I without moving Do me the favor please to regain possession of the handkerchief you Just returned to Miss Thorne and to send to me here your secretary Senor Diaz and your servants one by one I shall question them alone No dont be alarmed Unless they know of the robbery they shall get no inkling of It from me First be good enough to replace the packet in the safe and lock it Senor Rodriguez replaced the pack et without question afterward locking the door then went out A moment later Senor Diaz appeared He remained with Mr Grimm for Just eight minutes Senor Rodriguez entered again as his secretary passed on and laid a lace handkerchief on the desk Mr Grimm stared at It curiously for a long time Its thQ same handkerchief- SI Senor Theres no doubt whatever about- It No Senor I got it by1- Its I of no consequence Interrupt ed Mr Grimm Now the servants please the men first The first of the men servants was In the room two minutes the second the butlerwas there five minutes ono of the women was not questioned at all the other remained ten min utes Mr Grimm followed her Into the hall Senor Rodriguez stood there helpless Impatient Well he demanded eagerly Im going out a little while re plied Mr Grimm placidly No one has even an intimation of the affair please keep tho matter absolutely to yourself until I return That was all The door opened and closed and he was gone At the end of an hour ho returned passed on through to the diplomatists private office sat down in front of the locked safe again and set the dial at thirtysix Senor Rodriguez looked on astonished as Mr Grimm pressed the soft rubber sounder of a stetho scope against the safe door and began turning the dial back toward ten slowly slowly Thirtyfive minutes later the lock clicked Mr Grimm rose turned the handle and pulled the safe door open Thats how It was done he explained to the amazed diplomatist And now please have a servant hand my card to Miss Thorne CHAPTER XI The Lace Handkerchief Still wearing the graceful filmy morning gown with an added touch of scarlet in her haira single red rose Miss Thorne came Into the drawingroom where Mr Grimm sat waiting There was curiosity In her manner thinly veiled but the haunt ing smile still lingered about her lips Mr Grimm bowed low and placed a chair for her after which he stood for a time staring down at one slim white hand at rest on the arm of the seat At last he too sat down- I believe he said slowly without preliminaries this is your handker chief He offered the lacy trifle odd in de sign unique in workmanship obvious ly of foreign texture and she ac cepted it Yes she agreed readily I must have dropped it again That is the one handed to you by Senor Rodriguez Mr Grimm told her I think you said you lost It In his office yesterday afternoon Yes She nodded inquiringly- It may interest you to know that Senor Rodriguezs butler positively Identifies it as one he restored to you twice at dinner last evening between seven and nine oclock Mr Grimm went on dispassionately Indeed exclaimed Miss Thorne The senor identifies It as one he found this morning In his office Mr Grimm explained obligingly During the night fifty thousand dollars in gold were stolen from his sate Miss Thorne sat motionless wait- Ing All this means what she inquir ed at length Ill trouble you please to return the money requested Mr Grimm courteously No reason appears why you should have taken it But Im not seeking reasons nor am I seeking dis agreeable publicityonly the money It seems to me you attach undue importance to the handkerchief she objectedThats a matter of opinion Mr I Grimm remarked It would be use less even tedious to attempt to disprove a burglar theory but against it Is the difficulty of entrance the weight of the gold the Ingenious meth od of opening the safe and the as sumption that not more than six per sons knew the money was in the safe while a person in the house might have learned it in any of a dozen ways And in addition is the fact that the handkerchief is odd there fore noticeable A lace expert assures me theres probably not another like It In time world Ho stopped Miss Themes eyes sparkled and a smile seemed to bo tugging at the corners of her mouth She spread out the handkerchief on her kneesYou Identify this again of course she queried Yes She thoughtfully crumpled up the I IBut If I Am Innocent lIt ot lace in ootn nanas men openua hem There were two handkerchiefs now they were Identical Which Is It please she asked If Mr Grimm was disappointed there was not a trace of it on his face the laughed outright gleefully mockingly then demurely Pardon me You see Its absurd The handkerchief the butler restored to me at dinner after I lost one In limo senors office might have been either of these or one Of ten other dupll cates in my room all given to me by her Maj I mean she corrected quickly by a friend in Europe She was silent for a moment Is that all No replied Mr Grimm gravely decisively Im not satisfied I shall insist upon the return of the money and If it Is not forthcoming I dare say Count dl Roslni the Italian ambassa dor would be pleased to give his per sonal check rather than have the mat ter become public She started to interrupt but he went on In any event you will be requested to leave the country Then and not until then a deemed change came over Miss Thornes face A deeper color leaped to her cheeks the smile faded from her lips and there was a flash of uneasiness in her eyesBut It I am innocent she protested You must prove it continued Mr Grimm mercilessly Personally I am convinced and Count dl Rosinl has practically assured me that Its unjust she interrupted pas sionately Its Its you have proved nothing Its unheard of Its beyond Suddenly she became silent A min ute two minutes three minutes passed Mr Grimm waited patiently Will you give me time and oppor tunity to prove my innocence she demanded finally And If I do con vince you I should be delighted to believe that I have made a mistake Mr Grimm assured her How much time One day Two days- I will let you know within an hour at your office she told him Mr Grimm rose And meanwhile In case of accident I shall look to Count di Rosinl for ad justment he added pointedly Good morningOne and ten minutes later he received this note unsigned Closed carriage will stop for you at southeast corner of Pennsylvania Avenue and Fourteenth Street tonight at oneHe was there the carriage was on time and my lady of mystery was In side He stepped In and they swung out Into Pennsylvania Avenue noise lessly over the asphalt Should the gold be placed in your hands now within the hour she queried solicitously would it be nec essary for you to know who was the the thief It would Mr Grimm responded without hesitation Even if it destroyed a reputation she pleaded The Secret Service rarely destroys a reputation Miss Thorne although it holds itself in readiness to do so I dare say In this case there would be no arrest or prosecution because of of reasons which appear to be good There wouldnt and there was a note of eagerness In her voice The identity of time guilty person would never appear It would become a matter of record In our office but beyond that I think not at least In this one instance Miss Thorne sat silent for a block or moreYoull admit Mr Grimm that you have forced me into a most remark able position You seemed convinced of my guilt and if youll pardon me without reason then you made it compulsory upon me to establish my Innocence The only way for me to do that was to find the guilty one I have done It and Im sorry because Its a little tragedy Mr Grimm waited Its a girl high in diplomatic society Her fathers position is an honorable rather than a lucrative one he has no fortune This girl moves In a certain act devoted to bridge and stakes are high She played and won arm played and won and on and on until her winnings were about eight thousand dollars Then luck turned She began to lose Her money went but she continued to play desperately Finally some old family jewels were pawned without her fathers knowl edge and ultimately they were lost One day she awoke to tho fact that she owed some nine or ten thousand dollars in bridge debts They were pressing and there was no way to meet them This meant exposure and utter ruin and women do strange things Mr Grhnrp to postpone such an ending to social aspirations I know this much if true for she ret T4rkf Yy N 7- J s fated it all to me horselr At last in sc eVaya misplaced letter perhaps or a word overheards- ho learned that fifty thousand dollars would boln the legation bank over night and evidently she learned the precise night She paused a moment Here Is the address of a man In Bal timore Thomas Q Griswold and she passed a card to Mr Grimm who sat motionless listening About four years ago the combination on the lega tion safe was changed This man was sent here to make the change therefore someone besides Senor Rodriguez does know the combination I have communicated with this man today for I saw the possibility of Just such a thing as this Instead of your steth oscope By a trick and a forged let ter this girl obtained the combination from this man Mr Grimm drew a long breath She Intended to take perhaps only what she desperately neededbut at sight of It alldo you see what must have been the temptation then We get out here There were many unanswered ques tions In Mr Grimms mind Here pressed them for the time stepped out and assisted Miss Thome to alight The carriage had turned out of Pennsylvania Avenue and at the moment ho didnt quite place himself A nar row passageway opened before them evidently the rear entrance ton house possibly In the next street Miss Thorne led the way unhesitatingly cautiously unlocked the door and to gether they entered a hall Then there was a short flight of stairs and they stepped Into a room one of a suite She closed the door and turned on the lights The bags of gold arc In the next room she said with the utmost com posureMr Grimm dragged them out of a dark closet opened onethere were tenand allowed the coins to dribble through his fingers Finally he turned and stared at Miss Thome who pallid and weary stood looking on Where are we he asked What house Is this The Venezuelan legation she an swered We are standing less than forty feet from the safe that was robbed You see how easyI And whose room Inquired Mr Grimm slowly Must I answer she asked appeal InglyYou must- Senorita Rodriguezmy hostess Dont you see what youve made me do She and Mr Cadwallader made the trip to Baltimore In his automobile andandI She stopped He knows nothing of it she added Yes I know said Mr Grimm He stood looking at her In silence for a moment staring deeply Into the pleading eyes and a certain tense ex pression about his lips passed For an Instant her hand trembled on his arm and he caught the fragrance of her hair Where Is she now he asked Playing bridge replied Miss Thorne with a sad little smile It Is always soat least twice a week and she rarely returns before two or half past She extended both hands impetuously Please be generous Mr Grimm You have the gold dont de stroy her- Senor Rodriguez the minister from Venezuela found the gold In his safe on the following morning with a brief note from Mr Grimm In which there was no explanation of how or where It had been found And two hours later Monsieur Bolssegur am bassador from France to the United States disappeared from the embassy vanished CHAPTER XII The Vanishing Diplomatist It was three days after the ambas sadors disappearance that Monsieur Rlgolet secretary of the French em bassy and temporary chargedaffalres reported the matter to Chief Camp bell In the Secret Service Bureau add ing thereto a detailed statement of several singular Incidents following close upon It He told It In order concisely and to the point while Grimm and his chief listened Monsieur Bolssegur the ambassador you understand Is a man whose habits are remarkably regular he be gan Ho has made It a rule to be at his desk every morning at ten oclock and between that time and one oclock he dictates his correspondence and clears up whatever routine work there Is before him I have known him for many years and have been secretary of the em bassy under him in Germany and Japan and in this country I have never known him tat vary this general order of work unless because of illness or necessary absence Well Monsieur last Tuesdaythis- Is Fridaythe ambassador was at his desk as usual He dictated a dozen or more letters and had begun anoth era private letter to his sister in Paris He was well along in this let ter when without any apparent rea son he rose from his desk and left the room closing the door behind him His stenographers impression was that omA detail of business had occurred to him and he had gone Into the general office to attend to It I may say Monsieur that this Impres sion seemed strengthened by the fact that he left a fresh cigarette burning in his ash tray and his pen was be hind his ear It was all as If he had merely stepped out Intending to re turn Immediatelythe sort of thing Monsieur that any man might have done It so happened that when he went out he left a sentence of his letter incomplete I tell you this to show that the Impulse to go must have been a sudden one yet there was nothing in his manner BO his stenographer ealstftiyIndicate emitmeet 91 pay N i 4 Zk oi Monsieur Bossegur still had not re turned and his stenographer went to luncheon r As he talked some inbred excite I ment seemed to be growing upon him due perhaps to his recital of facts and he paused at last to regain con t trol of himself Incidentally he won dered if Mr Grimm was taking the slightest Interest in what he was say Ing Certainly there was nothing in his Impassive face to indicate It Understand Monsieur the secre tary continued after a moment that I knew nothing whatever of all this until late that afternoonthat Is Tuesday afternoon about five oclock I was engaged all day upon some im portant work in my office and had had no occasion to see Monsieur Bols e segur since a word or so when tcame In at ten oclocle My bltwas called to the affair finally by stenographer Monsieur Netterville who cane to me for Instructions He had finished the letters and the ambassador had not returned to sign them At this point I began an in r vestlgatlon Monsieur and the further 7 I 7II went the more uneasy I grew I Now Monsieur there are only two entrances to the embassythe front door where a servant is in constant attendance from nine in the morning 1 until ten at night and the rear door which can only be reached throughyi the kitchen Neither of tho two men who had been stationed at the front door had seen the ambassador slnco breakfast therefore he could not have gone out that way Comprenez It seemed ridiculous Monsieur but then I went to the kitchen The chef had r been there all day and he had not seen the ambassador at all I inquired further No onq In the embassy not Now irEntrancesi I I a clerk nor a servant nor a member l of the ambassadors family had seenef him since ho left his office Again he paused and ran one hand across his troubled brow Monsieur he wont on and there was a tense note In his voice the ambassador of Franco had disappeared gone vanished I We searched the house from the cellar to the serv ants quarters even the roof but there was no trace of him The hatIhe usually wore was In the hall and all his other hats were accounted for You may remember Monsieur that Tuesday was cold but all his topcoats L tr tbItended In a burst of excitement IIf he left the embassy he did not go out by either dour and he went without hat or coat He stopped helplessly and his gaze alternated Inquiringly between tho be nevolent face of the chief and the ex CONVENTION Tentative plans are being discussed for a good roads convention at Pineville to which the surrounding counties over a wide stretch of ter ritory are to be invited to send delegates The good roads sentiment in Bell county is strong and Pineville would be a good place for the holding of such a meeting Senator Joe Bosworth the pioneer advo cate of the State aid idea lives at Middlesboro only a few miles away and the leading citizens both in Middlesboro and in Pineville are earn est and enthusiastic in their desire for better highways A convention such as is proposed would give great impetus to the goodroads movement in the mountains and if made the starting point 5f a permanent organization covering the counties of Southeastern Kentucky would be a continuing influence for improvement The citizens of Pineville and1 Bell county are hospitable to a marked degree and those who attend the convention will be provided for in a way to make them glad they accepted the invitation Road improvement is one of the vital questions now before the people of Kentucky It will continue to be a live issue until there is a systematic and general effort to lift the State out of the mud andput it on a plane with other pro gressive States which are dealing resolutely and intelligently with the highway problem Pineville can do the rest of the State a service by working up a firstclass convention and pointing the way fbr similar meetings in other localities Kentucky should be holding many gatherings of this kind Good roads associations should be formed at the county seats nrd in the district schoolhouses and there should be a general agita tion of the subject which will penetrate to every nook and corner in the State however remote CourierJournal We heartily endorse the idea of a Good Roads Convention heliev in it will stimulate public interest in the subject and ultimately pro duce legislation that will relieve the present situation Kentucky is fully half a century behind the times The fault lies with the law and not the oflicers The last grand jury of Montgomery county compose of energetic and cnpable men with S English Anderson as fore man made a caroful investigation of the subject and reported to the court in part as follows uVe further find upon investigation that the amount realized for turnpike purposes by the present system of taxation is thoroughly inadequate for such purposes and we recommend that some plan be devised if possible to authorize an increase of the amount to be used for turnpike purposes The only wily to accomplish this result is by exacting new laws The next Legislature should give us this needed legislation and if the people show sufficient interest in it their demands will be heeded Possibly the soldiers are through the years long after the lips that uttered them have crumbled to dust Children carry the memory of words of ap preciation with them through childhood and often recall them i old age when enveloped in the shadows of life They are like the perfume of the violet that lifts its headabove the spring snows and whispers to them of the sunshine Money cannot buy intellect can not create so rare n gem as true kindness It is a heart product and needs the tenderest of culture It is killed by indifference and en feebled by neglect We feel animated to struggle more manfully in great battles the paths of rectitudeThat there is a God all nature declares in a language too plain to be misapprehended It is written over the face of the whole crea tion You see it in the tender blade just Niagaras tremen dous torrent leaping over its aw fulchasm unite in telling us of n God Show these beautiful arch ed heaVens to your children and explain to them these poets while there young minds are so tender and easily impressed A woman who is capable of fill ing her home in every sense of the word is worthy of more true applause than if she possessed many accomplishments We are often very much impressed by the woman who is doing a great and grand work for humanity but the one who retains our respect is the true wife and mother who pre sides over her home and children with a heart and head demonstra ting kindness and ability which puts the blush on the public life Let the parents the father us well as the mother impress upon their young daughters whether they are in the country school house or college that the true womans sphere is in the home und the great business find educa tional worlds that have thrown wide open the doors for woma- does not detract one iota from the importance
