Royally Entertained Messrs C C Chenault W A Samuels and G H Strother mem bers of the Street Paving Com mission visited Ashland Ky and Huntington W Va last week accompanied by Jno W William Ashland is considered one of the best paved cities of its size in the United States and much valuable information was obtained by these gentlemenThey informed at Ashland that the cost of brick streets there ranged from 138 a square sur face yard to 194 The streets constructed about a year ago cost the last named price All streets in Ashland are on concrete base of six inches with sixteen inch base in street car tracks and many heavy excava tions were necessary The oldest street paved in Ashland has been used about six years and not a dol lar has been spent on same for re pairsThe streets at Huntinjrton cost from 128 a square yard to 165 Most of them have no concrete base which is the method recom mended by all experienced engi neers today The curbing and gutters at Ashland cost fortynine cents a lineal foot The main streets of Ashland are 64 feet in width while the streets of Mt Sterling average from 36 to 40 ft The difference in freight rates will increase the cost here to some ex tent but it is believed brick streets can be put in here complete for not to exceed 190 a square sur face yard The people of both of these cities are enthusiastic in their praise of brick streets saying that as soon as they were put down in the business district and the ad vantages were seen the citizens desired them in the residential portion e The entire Commission is working hard on this proposition and will be ready to report to the City Council soon It now looks like brick streets ore a certainty here and is is predicted that actual work construction will be commenced by June 1st The citizens of both Ashland and Huntington showed these gentlemen every courtesy At Huntington they were royally en tertained by the local lodge of Elks Do you know our motto It is Everything Good to of placid Idleness He was a little beyond mid dIe age pleasant of face white of hair and blessed with guileless blue eyes His genius had no sparkle to It It consisted solely of detail and system and Church Members u April 30th has been set aside this year as Tuberculosis Day and will be observed bv 200000 churches in the country in a man nor similar to that ofuTubercu losis Sunday in 1910 when over 40000 sermons were preachedon the prevention of consumption The Kentucky Association for the Study and Prevention of Tuber culosis states that it will make a special effort to enlist everyone of over 1200 ministers in Ken i I inIbringingI subject before the members of their respective churches It is estimated that in this way over 250000 persons in Kentucky will be enlisted in this movement In one respect Tuberculosis Day of this year will differ from Tuberculosis Sunday of 1910 Instead of requesting the churches to give to the Tuberculosis cause a special Sunday service the State Association is this year going to ask that meetings at which Tuber culosis and its prevention be dis cussed be held on Sunday April 30 or on any day near that date either in the week preceeding or the week following The object is to get as many people in Kentucky as possible to thinkabout this great problem at the same timeIt is conservatively estimated that there are in Kentucky today at least 20000 persons suffering from the disease in some form or otherThe State Association is plan ning to distribute educational leaf lets in connection with this day and it is earnestly desired that the public will take an active part in stamping out this preventable disease which sends over 6500 of citizens to an early grave every I year and causes an economic loss to our State of over 13000000 subject to the action of the Democratic primary May 27th Mr Pollard is a native of Henry county During the last 22 years he has lived in Eastern Kentucky and devoted his ever vies to the practice of his profes sion He has always been an un compromising Democrat and for many years has been an active worker for the party and also a leader in its counsels He is prominent in fraternal circles Masonic Odd Fellows Knights of Pythias and Hoo Hoo In 1909 he served the Grand Lodge Knights of Pythias as Grand Chancellor of Kentucky He is a a member of the Grand Lodge of Odd Fellows and a member of Webb Commanders Knights Tern plar and also of Oleika Tenmle of the Mystic Shrine Lexington Ky The many favorable press com ments and the practically unani of the mous endorsement newspa pers published in the mountain j counties comprising the tenth dis trict indicate that Judge Pollard l is regarded as a strong man and that his nomination would add strength to the ticket Below we j publish the splendid endorsement given him by his Route paper the I Jackson Times and by the Henry County Local published in the county of his birth The Times delights in calling the attention of the Democrats of r Kentucky to the candidacy of Judge 01I Pollard of this city for the nomination for Attorney General before the Democratic primary to be held May 27th Judge Pollard is one of the strongest men in the State A t Democrat of flawless record he has for many years been one of the bulwarks of his party in Eastern Kentucky Under his blillI iant leadership as Chairman of the i Campaign Committee in HI09II t Breathitt county was wheeled bath I into the Democratic column gi- vlIiigi a majority of i early 500 as against a Republican majority ofI dver 400 the previous year and franking possible the election of aI Democratic Circuit Judge1 and Cohfihonwealths Attorney Judge UedwiAe the successful candidate for Crrut JudgeI made public acknowledgment of Mr Pollards services Vhcn he gave out for publication on the day following the election an interview in which he said I ywe my election to 0 H Pollard His sagacity coolness and untiring energy in the management of the campaign produced time results which gave us the splendid victory- It is a fact worthy of mention that upon divers occasions pre vious to this when Judge Pollard served as Campaign Chairman Breathitt county was always car ried by the Democrats and with increasedmajorities His friends are proud of the fact that upon all occasions when acting in this disinterested capacity he never lost a battle but without a single excep tion the largest majorities ever given by the party in this county were in the campaigns under its management We believe we voice the senti ments of the Tenth District when we say we are proud to indorse a man like O H Pollard for the office of Attorney General An able and experienced lawyer a logical reason er an eloquent and forceful speaker a man of un blemished character and a verita ble bundle of nerve and energy his nomination would add strength to the ticket anti his electionwould reflect credit and honor upon the k + Jt IfJc YK t n party in the administration of the affairs of Kentucky As a campaigner MrI Pollard has few equals and no superiors in the State The Democrats of the Tenth District in asking his nomi nation are presenting a man who fills every require raent and is peculiarly fitted by reason of his I thisIulace on time ticket Thinking men must recognize the importance to the party and in fact the necessity of looking to this section in the future for re cruits The rapid increase in the population and the wealth of Eas tern Kentucky as the consequence of the development of our resour ces force this section to the front as the battle ground for the two contending parties Democratic success depends upon a judicious distribution of office and the char acter of the men selected as the party nominees The people are demanding men of high moral correctjour fellow townsman O II Pol lardJackson TimesI IIon O II Pollard qf Jackson Breathitt county having an nounced his candidacy for Attorney General before the State Dem ocratic primary we are pleased to say without a request or sugges tion from any one a few words by wuy of endorsement- As is well known to nearly ev erybody in this part of the State Mr Pollard is a selfmade man having struggled unaided from an humble beginning over many ob stacles and through not a little vicissitude to a commanding po sition in the legal fraternity of the State In challenging Statewide recognition as a lawyer he also builded a strong character and demonstrated that he is a man of innate force anal great energy sucha man indeed as wouldat ohce bring efficiency to the very important office of Attorney General andreflect credit on the party The Democrats in this region of the State where he was well known as a young man will beyond a doubt vote for him May 27th with uractical unanimity not only to further his ambitious but in order to put a competent man in the office No other name has had more prominence in Eastern Kentucky in an honorable way than 0 H Pollards and for some time he has maintained offices in both Lexington and Jackson thus widening his opportunity The fact is the logic of the situation points to Mr Pollard as the next nominee I for the office in question If he had been merela passive Demo crat undnot the steamengine Democrat that he is in other words if he had never done any thing for the party insteadof proving to be a born leader and a winner of ninny
