STEKXilKGr KENTUCKY JUDGE PETERS REMINISCENCES Wo have no information that Capt Ashby after ho returned from tho Braddock war engaged in any enter ¬ prise or business except farming con- ¬ necting with it rearing and racing thoroughbred horses until 1774 By tho proclamation of tho- King of England in 1703 tho soldiers who served in tho Braddock war in his army were to bo paid in wild lands in Kontucky and to avail himself of the boiiollt of that proclamation we know from tradition that ho came to Ken- tUcky in person to locate his lands and wo know from tho patent to him dated tho 10th day of Novembor 1779 for 1000 acres of land on iJcar grass in Jefferson county Kentucky antl the ono for 2e000 acres in Wood- ¬ ford county jKontucky that ho sur ¬ veyed thd first named tract on the 8th day of June 1774 and tho other sur- veyvivas mado on tho 23d of June 1774 These facts we know aro true becauso thoy aro recited in tho pat- ¬ ents for the lands and wo have ofli cial copies of said patents now before us These two tracts as also recited in said patents were granted to him for military services in said war and wero held by devisees He also loca- ¬ ted another tract of very fiiio land on Stays above tho Ohio Itivci ville in what is now Lewis county and including Firmans Bottom ono of tho richest bottoms ou tho Ohio Itiyer This land was lost to his de Twenty years viseed by as tho Captain supposed they landed It was thinly covered with trees so they wore enabled to detect any savagcp if they wero on the island or if thoy should attempt to reach them from tho shorr to de- ¬ fend themselves or escapo by means of tho rivor before thoy could land on tho island No Indians appearing they kindled a firo laid down and slept byurns till morning one always keeping watch They him as their landlord so that there could bo no adverse holding to his claim Wo supppso Capt Ashby went from Boargrass to Woodford and mado his location becauso there aro only fifteen days difference in the dates of the two sur ¬ veys and it is probable that tho sur- ¬ vey in Lewis county followed eooii after tho one in Woodford But I have no copy of the patent to that land It however was lost to tho old Captains devisoes by an adverse holding of occupauts under inferior titles Tho devisees of tho Boargrass land brought suit against tho tres- ¬ passers ou it in titno to bar tho run ¬ ning of tho statute and thoy held it All tho land located by Capt Ashby ou that trip is believed to bo worth now a half million of dollars After having located the land in Lewis county tho company Ashby Porter and Wells went to tho falls of tho Ohio River and having passed below tho falls lauded at a point whero thoy designed to locate other lands Very shortly after landing their piroguo thoy were fired upon by several Indians but none of them being struck thoy hastened back to their vessel and rowed it toward the opposite shore They had not more than reached the middlo of tho stream beforo they discovered a number on Tho Indians con- ¬ tho opposite shore tinued to firo on them but- missed them continually except that thoy knocked Ben Porters hat oft into tho stream Down tho current witli as much speed as possible thoy glided keeping as near tho middlo as practicable while all along for miles and till near dark tho Indians continued to shoot at thorn without doing any damage Thoy were scattered upon either shore trying to keep paco with tho canoe as it passed along Two days and nights they labored at their oars and watched constantly seeing Indians on one or tho other of the shores generally on both foar ing to land Fortunately however thoy wero provided with a small sup ¬ ply of provisions consisting of dried - New York Aug 30 1892 Healthy persons catch cholera by taking into their system through the mouth as in their food or drink or from their bauds knives forks plates tumblers clothing etc the germs of tho disease which arc always present in the discharges from the stomach and bowels of those sick with cholera Thorough cooking destroys the cholera germs therefore Dont cat raw uncooked articles of any kind not even milk Dont cat or drink to excess Use plain wholesome digestible food as indigestion and diarrhoea favor an at- ¬ tack of cholera Dont drink unboiled water Dont eat or drink articles unless they have been thoroughly and re- ¬ cently cooked or boiled and the more recent and hotter they are tho better Dont employ utensils in eating or drinking unless thoy have been re- ¬ cently in boiling water the more re- ¬ cent the safer Dont eat or handle food or drink with unwashed hands or receive it from the unwashed bauds of others Dont uso tho hands for any purpose when soiled with cholera discharges thoroughly cleanse them at once Personal cleanliness and cleanliness of the living and sleeping rooms and their contents and thorough vcntila tiou should bo rigidly enforced Foul water closets sinks Croton faucets cellars etc should bo avoided aud when present should be referred to tho Health Board at once and reme ¬ J- Health Debabtment m m 1 A died rRECAUTIOXAKY TREATMENT- Thosuccossful treatment and the provention of the spread of this dis- ¬ ease demand that its earliest manifes- ¬ tations bo promptly recognized and treated therefore Dont doctor yourself for bowel complaint but go to bed and send for tho nearest physician at once Send to a dispensary or hospital fend to tho Health Department send to the nearest police station send to your family physician for medical aid Dont wait but send at once If taken ill iu tho street seek the nearest drug store dispensary hospital or polico station aud demand prompt medical attention Dont permit vomit or diarrheal discharges tocoino in contact withfood drink or clothing Theso dis- ¬ charges should bo received in proper vessels and kept covered until re ¬ moved under competent directions Pourjboiling water on them put a strong solution of carbolic acid in them not less than ono art of acid to twenty of hot soapsuds or water Dont wear handle or uso any clothing or furnituro that aro soiled with cholera duchaiges Pour boil- ¬ ing water on them or put them into it and scrub them with tho carbolic acid solution mentioned above and prompt- ¬ ly request tho Health Board to re ¬ move them - Dont bo frightened but do bo cautious and avoid excesses aud un ¬ necessary
