National Bant HO- - J O MILER - INSURANCE When true ocean ocean birds like petrels are found scattered inland dead or dying as has been tho case during tho past month wo may safely infer that the weather from side to sldo of tho Atlantic has borno hardly not only on tho ships but on tho fricudlybirds that love to follw them Perhaps tho strangest instanco of tho forcci wanderings of a potrel was that which brought one of tho laBt known members of an extinct or at any rate a lost specicp tho capped petrol whose only home appears to havo been the islands of St Domingo and Guadaloupe from tho West India seas to a Norfolk heath In March or April 1800 a bird was scon by a boy on a heath in Southacrc in Norfolk flapping from one furze bush to another until it crept into one and was there caught by himi Exhausted as it was it violently bit Ids hand and he thereupon kiMed it A Mr Newcome one of a raco of falconers happened to bo hawking in tho neighborhood and his falconer seeing tho boy with tho dead bird brought U to his master by whom it was skinned and stuffed and placed in tho Newcomo collection where it still remains It was a largo bird about 10 inches in length with tho long curved wings characteristic of all the petrels and a black head as its name indicates Only two other instances of tho capped petrels appearance in Europe aro known Ono was bhot near Boulogne and one in Hungary in 1870 which is in tho Museum of Uuda Pesth Two others havo been taken in the United States But the strangest part of tho story is that the cappoll petrels are now cither extinct or lost to the knowledge of man It is certain says Mr Stevenson in his last aud unfinished volume of TlnyBirds of Norfolk that th6 true honib of this very rare species is or was in the islands of Guadaloupo aud Dominicia in tho West Indies where it was formerly very abundant but one of its old bleeding places in tho last named of these islands was ex- ¬ plored without finding a single bird in February 1887 by Col Ficklen It appears that ten years before not only Dominica but also Guadaloupe was searched in vain for the Diablo tlus the namo by which theso pctrals were known to the old voyagers It is believed that they were possibly de- ¬ stroyed by a South American opoB sum which waB introduced to tho island but as the young aud even the young and even the old birds were constantly caught by tho islandors for food in tho holes in which they nested their destruction may be due like that of tho great auk to human greediness ¬ ¬ Santa Glans3 HeadqnartersI THE WORLD WELCOMES SAM
