this Suppose a bird fancier collects a flock of tame pigeons distinguished by all the infinite ornamentations of their race They are of all kinds of every shade of color and adorned with every variety making He lakes them to an uninhabited island andallows them to fly off wild into the woods They find a colony there and after the lapse of many years the owner returns to the spot He will find that a re markable change has taken place in the interval The birds or theij decendants rather have all become changed into the same color W The black thwhite acid the Sdunand the ringed ar all gone back into onea dark iaty Hte1 But all the variety i all tae beautiful colors all the old graces ofprm it nay be have disappeared These ifprovernenta vere the re siiltsjof care an 4nature of do inesticati4uaffXofcivilizaiionas F remoteshe birds left to them = selvesrrO back and loss what they had gained The attempt to elevate the race has been mysteriously thwarted It is now as the original bird the far remote an cestor the old blue These birds has been compelled by some strange law lo discard the badges of their civilization and conform to the ruder image of the first Now then the natural law by canIedType It is a proof of the universality of this lawthat the same thing will happen with a plant A garden is planted let ttssay with strawber ries and roses and for number of years is left aloee In the process of timey it will run to waste But this dfsnotm an that the plants willreally waste away but that they will change into something else and as it invariably appears into something worse in the orfe case namely into the small wild strawberry of the woods ndin thef other into the primitive dog rose of the hedges fwe neglect a garden plant theha natural principle of de terioration comes in and changes it into a worse plant And ifeneglect a bird by the same law it will be gradually Changed into an li lier gird Or if we neglect al most any of the domestic animals they will rapidly revert to wild and worthless forms again Nov the happeniln our own case Why jsl ould a mau bean exceplinictoany of ilth laws of nature 1rt f Nature knows man simlyt as an aui111alYJ VApd ial recognition of the great im portance of this york Beyond question tliere is nothing that will be of so much benefit to the people 4 of Kentucky as tbeimprovement of thei andrthe public highways are therground work the basis of the whole sys tent We need more steam rail d roads and we need trolley lines and the demand for these can no longer be igifered but above all we mtgse better county rroads to enable farmers to market their products more cheaply to promote the fconifort anti convenience and to add tot sociability ofrural life Good roads would be the best missionaries that could bd placed in the mountains and they will elevate IN the moral tone and increase the wealtR of any community When one undertakes an estimate of the saving in the cost of market ing the crops by the substitution of maccadamied highways for the wretched dirt roads the wonder is tHat these have been tolerated to say nothing of the vast improve ment the better roads would give to the desirability of life oc the f farm where the bulk of our citizenship resides The convention if well attend d by delegates from1 over the State will do more to arouse ptiblic inter est in the cause of good roads tlra anytXnig clsethat could be devised The COllttpent experts will be a valuable object lesson for road ak ing is a science ilidt re quirelapprenticeship simple as i seeing Best of all the convention will afford an opportunity to organ ize public sentiment on the necessity of securing proper legislation The obsolete method of working the roads by warning in the tax payers should be abolished in favor of taxation and the employment of J fesPon THetshould make an appropriation for the encouragement of roac building and a State Engineer shbiild be provided to supervise the work to which the State contributes Pro vision ought to be made by the counties that would prevent the supervisorships from being bestowed on politicians They should be given to men who will build good roads from the start and not waste the money as it has been wasted in the past Millions of dollars are spent under the present system with no appreciable betterment of the highways It is time these selfevident truths should be recog nised and steps taken not only to raise money but to see that it is- sp 1u t to good purpose t The first essential is to arouse apd keep alive public interest This can be done at the Good Roaxjs Convention if the county of fi ers will do their part in the se lc ion ofdelegates Courier Journ al Wrrfe a divided court the con clusion has been reachd byama jority of the Supreme Judges inevitably drop off in ruin and decay Ve uow have a thoroughly natural basis for the queston before us Now we neglect with this uni versal Princilstaiiig vir in the face how shAn vie escape If we neglect the ordinary means of keeping a garden in order how shall it escape running to weeds 1 and oPtrs iflov it escape ignorance arid feebleness So if we neglect the soul hbw can it escape the natural retrograde movement and go into billdeat aniIIliavV taken to spending their lives beneaui the surface of the ground And nature has taken her revenge Jjtipon t ei mnwayshe has closed up their eyes if they mean to live in darkness she argues eyes are superfluans functions By neglecting them these animals madeit clear they do not want them And as one of natures fixed principles is that nothing shall exist in vain the eyes are taken away or reduced to a rudimentary state There are fishes also which had to pay the same terrible forfeit for having rttde their abode in dark caverns where eyes can never be required And in exactly the same way the spiritual eye must die and lose its power by purely natural law if the soul choose to live and walk in darkness rather than light Now this is the meaning of the favori te hirm that hath not shall be taken away take therefore the talent from himThe religious faculty is a talent the most splendid and sacred thre natural conditions and laws If hidee it in a napkin although it is dong him neither harm nor good appar ently God will not allow him t have it Although it is lying there rolled up in the darkness not con spicuously affecting any one still God will not allow him to keep it He will not allow him to keep it any more than tiature would allow 1 IThereforetalent from him And nature dose it This mans crime via s simply neglect than wicked an slothful servant It was a wasted life a life which failed in the holy stewardship of itself Now when you examine those animals wick have inhabited for years the lakes of the Cave of Kentucky you will be astonished to find these animals apparently endowed with perfect eyes but on a close examination you will find their secret is betrayed The eyes are a mockery Externally they are organs of vision the front of the the eye is perfect behind there is nothing but a mass ofruins The optic nerve is shrunken These animals have organs ofvision and yet have no vision The have eyes but they see Dot Exactly what Christ said of me they had eyes but no vision An tire reason is it is one of the simp turalbistoryIto darkness Thetefor they have become fitte- for it By refusing to see the have waived the right to see And nature has grimly humor then Nature had to do it by her hatnIears not degenerated let him hear There are some men to whom it TlieyIbut no vision By neglect they have lost their slight There are some men whose scvits are already honeycombed througn and through with the effects of neglect But it is a fearful thing to fait in the hands of the living God Phill0 us of the living Godare only the laws of j it 5 f nature HOW is the soul to escape to heaven if it has neglected for a lifetime the means of ecape from the world and self And where is the capacity for heaven to come from if it be not developed on earth Where in deed is even the smallest spiritual appreciation of God and heaven to come from when so little of SjJfrk uality has even been knowrii orI manifested here If every dfed wordaspiration of the soul has been allowed to become extinct and every inlet that was open to heaven to be choked and every talent for religious love and trust to have been neglected and ignored where are the acuities to come from that would ever find the faint est relish in such things af Goer and heaven offers to give Now these three words Salva tion Escape and 1 tg1 ect thenare dnotnecessarily connected F1ieiJcfoc trine is scientific ana not atbitrar tbanlthew nothing less It means the gradual piVcfing off of all that cannot enter the high er state or he yen and the puting on of Christ It involves the completing of the souland the development of a capacity tot Go Jf then escape is to be open to uy it is not to come to us somehow by chance We afe not to hope for anything startling or mysterious It is a definite opening along certain lines which are definitely marked by God which begin at thfe cross of Christ and lead direct to him Andeach man in the silence of his own soul must work out this salva tion for himself with fear and tremblingwith fear realizing the momentous issues ofhistaskwith tardytshould summon us to stop Now what these lines ate may in closing be indicated in a word The true problem of the spiritual oppooever do it and you shall escape It will just mean that you are so to cultivate the soul that all its pow ers will open out to God and in beholding God be diawn away from sin There is for example a sense of sight in the religious na ture Neglect this and leave it undeveloped and you simply see youdAnd the line along which to de velop it is known to us Become pure in heart The pure in heart shall see God Here then is one avehspiritual seeing of God Then there is a sense of sound Neglect this leave
