been conservatively prepared by the president of the Travelers Asso ciation who shows that it repre sentsan annual loss ofr 14000000 This means that r 114000000 withdrawn from the annual distribution of money in legitimate chan nels of trade The items are divTded into a loss of 27000000 to the railroad ex press and sleeping car companies an amount equal to the entire stir plus earnings of the railroad com psanies of the United States for the year 1898 But the railroad magnates who are Hot worrying about the boys along the lne will get their money back by the trusts have no fear The hotels ofthe country are in a different position They must suffer a dead loss of 28000000 How does Mine host enjoy the medicine Will he vote to indorse the party which is responsible The traveling men have lost 60 000000 in salaries Sixty jmillion dollars a year is quit an item to the families of men who have been compelled to live a life of openhanded generosity and whose sayings must necessarily be small NOT MONEY GRABBERS The commercial traveler has not been a hoarder He has not been a moneygrabber His value his employer rested upon the friendships which he won His firm expected him to be popular It expected him to hold up his end in the interchange of courte sies and hospitalities along the line As a rule he was a man of person al prides and his sense of honor stood between him and a Bryan Has 189 Votes With Ito Others Doubtful Adlai E Stevenson who return ed to Chicago Monday from his campaigning trip through the East ern States spoke enthusiastically of the Democratic activity in th States through which he had passed Mr Stevenson made the flat footed declaration that the Dem ocrats would carry Indiana and he added Ohio should be put down very s likely to give its electoral votes for Mr Bryan To my mind the two great doubtful States which lean more strongly to the Demo cratic than to the Republican side in this fight are New York and Ohio J Mr Stevenson then made the says regarding reports he has received at the Democratic campaign htadquarters From these reports I feel satisfied that the Democrats will carry Ala bama Arkansas California Colorado Delaware Florida Georgia Idaho Indiana Kansas Kentucky Louisiana Maryland Mississippi New York Missouri Montana Nebraska Nevada North Carolina South Carolina Tennessee Texas Utah Virginia Washington and West Virginia making a total of 263 electoral votes- TbeRepublicans will carry Connecticut Iowa Maine Massachusetts New Hampshire North Da kota Oregon Pennsylvania Rhode Island Vermont and Wisconsin with a total of 103 electoralvotes These States are reasonably in doubt Illinois Michigan Minne sota South Dakota Wyoming and New Jersey with 87 electoralvotes Of the doubtful States I regard the chances of the Democrats to be better in Illinois Michigan and South Dakota I think the Repub Iicanshave the upperhand in the others As I said at the beginning it is impossible to accurately gauge the result of a national election in advance but as close as I can get at it by the information I receive daily from trusted associates in every corner of the country I feel abso lutely satisfied that Bryan and definite statement given ou rv the Demo cratic managers regarding the gen eral situation was made Monday night in an interview with Secre tary Kerr of the Congressional Committee The drit of sentiment is all our canesee ut victory for both our national and legislative tickets The general situation is improving all along the line The fight has been a hard one but we are confident that we now have our congressional districtsin such shape that we are absolutely sure of a majority of at least twentyfive in the next House ofltheducted in a dignified but neverthe less an aggressive manner and I thistgentleman All admit to the truthfullness of his argument I see an article on good roads written by some one signing as fax Payer setting forth as hen doubt thinks stropg argument in favor 01 the bond issue and seems to think that all parties not seeing as he does are against their own interests and says that some that are opposed to those bonds say the promoters of the pikes pro pose to start in about four ways from Mt Vernon This tax payer says that no such thing was ever thought of Say they propose to build a pike from the Laurel line to the Lincoln line and another from the Pulaski line to Madison line Now Mr Tax Payer tell the people Un plain words where you propose to bgin those pikes Do you propose to begin at the line of those counties named and build the road through by way of Mt Vernon or do you propose to be gin those roads at Mt Vernon and build them towards those county lines That is one question we in the ccuntry want you to answer plainly Then you thy those bonds will be readily paid off and in a few years actually have surplus Now we in the count y cannot see just how that can be when the interest on those bonds will amount to 1200 per annum Now we in this part of the county want good roads but we want them all over the county and are honest in the belief that we will not get them by advocating this pike question In the first place there will be a rock crusher to buy and experienced hands to run it and surveyors to locate the pikes you propose to build and by the time you get r ady to go tQ work on the pikes onethird of the money for which those bonds are sold willbe ex hausted Then after the few miles of pikes are bnilt that the money will build that is left the taxpayer will have to be taxed to keep up those few miles of turn pikes to gether with a tax to still keep up the county roads My opinion is that to take the money you propose to expend on those pikes and put out on ths county roads w would see a great deal betters results than the few miles of pike that could be built with this moneyV But we are willing to listen to vttie arguments of Mr Tax Payer but w e want the questions anweredso there will be misunderstanding it BROQHEAO t x ROCKCASTE COUNTY OURT SEPT 21 1900 Whereas twenty per cent of the regal voters of Rockcastle county hath made application by written petition to me Judgt of the Rock castle County Court to orde an election to be held on the 6th day of November 1900 at the va rious voting places in said county for the purpose of taking the senseI of the voters ol said county whether or not they desire an ap1 propriatiou ol thirty thousand dol lars 30000 to be secured by selling Bonds of the county to Le payable at the option of the county at any time within twentyfive years from date of their issue and to Sear a rate of interjst not great er than four per centper annum from date until paid and not to be sold at a price less than their par value for the purpose of raising mon to build and maintain turn pikes and gravel roads in Rock castle county Said bonds to be paid as well as their interest by means ot levying a tax of not to ex ceed 15 cents on each hundred dollars I worth of taxable property in
