Northern Press on the Murderof Goebel JHl hitJ n5Iti1handed Lawlessness kepubiican Papers on Caleb Power Trial the verdict of the jury in the trial of Caleb Powers exsecretary- of state of Kentucky which finds him guilty of complicity in the murder of William Goebel and fixes his punishment at imprisonment for life will surprise no one who has carefully followed the evidence and is at all familiar with the polit ical conditions in that state growing out of the contest over thegov errorship It cannot be denied that the state produced a formidable array of evi dence tending to prove that the as sassination of Goebel was not the work of a reckless daredevil mountaineer who did the dastardly job upon his own responsibility but that it was the result of a carefully planedconspiracy There is no longer any doubt among fairmind ed Republicans as well as Democrats that the Goebel murder was delib erately Planiiedand the assassin was the agent of a conspiracy which had conceived that some advantage was to be derived from the removal of the Democratic claimant to the governorshipThe the state in the case of Powers was to establish his con nection with or responsiblity for the conspiracy which is known to have existed The state claims to have done this upon the testimony of severalwitnesses who related conversations in which Powers is alleged to have stated that Goebel had to be killed The most cred ible testimony of this character was given by Finley Anderson a Republican and a warm personal friend of Powers a resident of Barbour villa the home of the defendant who detailed a conversation in which Powers told him that Goe belwould not live to take his seat and that if necessary he would kill him himself Add to such testimony as this the admission of Powers that he organ ized the crowd of 1200 armed mountaineers which came to Frank fort on January 15 also the proof that he gave Henry E Youtseythe key to his office in the state building and that the shot which killed Goebel was fired from that office and it is difficnlt to see how the urYunder the instructions of Judge Gantri could bring in any other verdict than that of gilty ofClac tessory before the tart to the murder The trial of Youtsey who was seen running down the stairway from the senetary of states office immediately after the shot was fired t and to whom Powers gave the Key to the office promises more import ant revelations than were disclosed iu the trial just ended and if conducted with the same vigor by the state should clear up the conspiracy that has blackened the name of Kentucky ChicagoTimes end Extravagant Waste of Public Money To Perpetuate tIle Amiistration Some idea of the extra vagant waste of the publics money in an effort to reward the political heeler may be obtained by a study of the figures given below These offices were created by the Republican ma jority in the first session of the present Congress and the patronage list thus handed over to the party managers for effective to ether place Gov Taylors case in the worse possible light A than fcho after his installation as gover nor is capable ofsuch lawless arbitrary and generally unprincipled conduct is manifestly not to be credited with honest and lawabiding methods in the campaign which eventuated in his being declared governor Whether Taylor or Goebel is the rightful governor of Kentucky now becomes a secondary issue The main question is the immediate ne cessity that the extraordinary despotism set up by Taylor and backed with bayonets and bullets shall pulled down and replaced with the Democratic form of County Court to order an election to be held on the 6th day of November 1900 at the va rious voting places in saidcounty for the purpose ot taking the sense of the voters of said county as to whether or not they desire an ap propriation of thirty thousand dol lars 30000 to be secured by selling Bonds of the county to be payable at the option of the county at any time within twentyfive years from date of their issue and to bear a rate of interest not great er than four per cent per annum from date until paid ard not tel be sold at a price less than their par value for the purpose of raising money to build and maintain turn pikes and gravel roads in Rock castle county Said bonds to be paid as well as their interest by means of levying a tax of not to ex ceed 15 cents on each hundred unsettled and threatening but it did not stop c1 crowd of 2000 from coming from all sections of Rockcastle county and large delegations from Pulaski and Jackson to hear John W Yerkes The most enthusiastic Republ- iCns withoplaced the crowd at 700 The carriage bearing Mr Yerkes was driven to the residence of Dr Williams wherewith Judge J W Alcorn Judge T Z Morrow and Judge W L Brown he sat down to a sumptuous din ner served in true Kentucky style Where did that carriage come feom Who drove it Who sa w it Ask the people if that is so The Court room had been beau tifully decorated for the occasion but the crowd could not get in so a platform was speedily erect ed in the Court yard from which Mr Yerkes spoke Go find the person who will say there were any decorations or that any platform was built They ex isted only in the mind of the writer Di Williams has a wide acquaint ance in the district and his per sonal popularity will be of great help to the ticket The facts are that the Doctor has no acquaintance in the district at all He even has to be intro duced to the Republican wire pull ers of this his native county We saw him introluced to as promi nent a man as even our good friend Geo T Johnson since he has been a candidate The Republi can postmaster at Brodhead did not even know him and had to ask who he was We simply publish these bits taken from the sup plement to show the citizen of this county what wilful misrepresent ations are made to deceive the peo ple THE school teachers ot the State will receive tomorrow only onehalf of the 40 per rent of the school funds due on that day This is due to the high per capita fixed by the Republicans last year for campaign purposes which resulted in a deficit of 130000 which had to be paid out of the present years Superintendents Under a recent decision of the Court of Ap peals the deficit of over 130000 yet due certain cities oh last school year must be paid out of the fund of the present year and must be paid
