Paid All Bills So Said Powers The defense in the Caleb Powers case at Georgetown Ky opened its case and outlined its plan of procedure on last Monday As was expected the defense asked fr- peremptory instructions for acquittal which motion was promptly overruled by the Court Judge E T Faulkner made the opening statement setting fourth a general denial of almost every thing the Commonwealth claimed except as to the gathering of the mountaineers which he claimed was a perfectly lawful and peace ful procedure aud had nothing to do with the assassination Powers then took the stand in x h sown defense and admitted hav ing brought the mountaineers to Frankfort under instructions and with the assistance of W S Tay lor J iq Powers saps there were three crows of men brought to Frank fort and that he helped to bring each crowd the first was while the Canvassing Board was in session They came not as witnesses but to show their interest but not as stated by Noaks to intimidate They were instructed not to crowd around the Canvassing Boards The second crowd was sum moned as witnesses in the contest cases and came from January 12 to I7 The tbirdcrowd wa brought to Frankfort on January 25th to show their interest in the outcome of the contest We had them come armed because the law gave them a right to bear arms openly and also to petition the legislature and The authority for that cost and payment of pikes in this county We meant to say and it is true too that the railroad company and property holders would pay nearly all the cost the railroad company paying onehalf ot it all Now just think of itthink seriously and then act Dont act too hastily Care fully count all the cost and place the amount upon the debit side then place the benefits upon the ciedit side and carefully add and when you shall have balanced the sheets the most sanguine pike ad vocates will be amazed at beholding such a large balance in favor of the credit colum No one except the person who Has given serious and long thought to the matter has even a tolerably good idea of the benefits to be derived for it will benefit every class of people in the county from the tramp or beggar allalongtheliue to the wealthiest landowner merchant or banker in the countrythis iscertainly true With such roads in our county immigration will flow inland will rise alls rts ot labor will find a demand at good wages at home and enterprise will be the watch word and prosperity the rult Now my friends talk only willnot build these roads neither can the labors of one man accomplish it were it thus and I would jfrmsoon cpmplete boo r I read Citizens dream very attentively and am satisfied that not one item1 is contained therein that cannot soon become a reality if we had those roads Now as to tax that great bug bear ot whom we are all So afraid and about which so much is said Richard did you ever think notice closely all I say that the man liv ing in the county who owns but one horse and makes but few trips to the county seat will save more than enough in time iron and horse flesh saying nothing ot extra comtort to pay his tax the man who owns two horses and is unfor tunate enough to run a road wagon will in wear tare hoss flesh time and difference in weight of load save enough to pay hrs whole State county and poll tax the man that runs a buggy in addi tion to the 2 hoss wagon will save enough to pay his protective tariff also the man who does more wa oningriding driving etc will save still more while the footman who owns no property and goes it alone will save enough in time pleasure and sole kather to pay his tax the cattle sheep hog and mule farmer will find more purchasers for his stock giving him the benefit of com peticn aid better prices the railroads will be benefitted too for thousands of a pounds will then find their way to the depot that are now consumed acid partly wasted at home Now let as get down to good hard thinking for thoughts beget words and decided to call an extra session r of the legislature to amend the election law It is certainly a wise act when we think how much might depend on Kentucky in the National election to say nothing vof the State We know that if the election was very close and by some pretext Kentucky could be thrown out and McKinley counted in it would as certainly be done as Mark Hanna said so and ol course it is whiling away time to tell how certain that is everybody knows fullwell what Marcus would do Ii fact everything seems to point to an oldtime victory this fall Mr Yerkes himself is a thorough bred subject of goodroads is being discussed somewhat through the column of your paper and I am glad to see that some interest is being manifested among our citi zens on this important subject Rockcastle needs good roads above everything else at present We go to our neighboring counties and there find turnpikes crossing thecnntyi1different directions and why cannot Rockcastle have some turnpikes I know they as badly needed here as in any other county and worse than in a great many other counties that have al ready built them Why not have Rockcastle up with some of her joining counties Why not have as good roads as they have so we trade and go about our business with some peasure I know that every person wants good roads because good roads are absolutely necessary for any person and for any county nXTo have these good roads it requires some expense and I think that it the people will only consider the matter and give it the proper thought that they will be thoroughly con vinced that it is best to pay the expense and have the good roads It they will just compare our pres ent roads with turnpikes they will see a great change they will see that the turnpikes will be a great deal more
