discord Imme diately after the decision of the Supreme Court a Kentucky office- went to Indianapolis carrying wit him a requisition from Gov Beck ham a copy of the indictment charging Charley Finley with being accessory to the murder of William Goebel and an affidavit of the Commonwealths Attorney oijthe Frank lin county district stating that he believed from the evidence that Finley could be convicted of mur der Finley was arrested in the above city at 630 oclock Monday evening and was taken immediate ly to the police station where he was safely guarded until the officer could go to Gov Mount and pre sent his requisition tor Finley that it might be honored by the Governor but it was immediately turned down by the executive who failed to give any reason whatever for his action Finley was indicted bv the Grand Jury of Franklin county composed of twelve sober discreet householders of that county The indictment was returned and filed in open court It was found upon evidence which strongly connects Finley with the murder of William Goebel Gov Mount may refuse to recognize a requisition for the return of Finley as there is no law to force him to do so It is purely a matter of personalcourtesy from one Governor to another but the people of the proud States of Kentucky and Indiana deep down in their hearts will condemn the action of Gov Mount in refusing to surrender Finley Our peopie do not believe in a government by assassination and neither will they vote for a party or man or set of Finleyishim come and stand the trial like the humblest citizen of the Commonwealth Let justice be meted out to him give him a fair and impartial trial and should he come and show his innocence let him go acquit If guiltylet him be punished according to the degree of the offence he has committed JOHN L POWERS was arrested for complicity in the Goebel assas sination conspiracy early Tuesday morning vhile attempting to flee from s the State He sued out a CountyJudgepresented a pardon signed by W S Taylor on March joth Judge Wyatt held the pardon good as it was issued by Governor Taylor and released Powers although the Circuit Court the Court of Appeals of Kentucky and the Su preme Court held that he was not Governor But what is the decision of such high tribunals when Wyatt although a Judge wants to oppose all law and the opinions of higher courts as well When we think of the diabolical crime committed at Frankfort the chasing of good law abiding officials through the streets of the capital the unlawful use of the militia when we think of how Taylor and his cohorts disregarded all law pardoned men before being arrested and assisted them in try ing to make their escape the pardoning of mountain hoboes for disorderly conduct when they were even ready to enter the plea oi guilty when we think of Caleband John Powers and Davis being cap tured while in full flight and Taylor and Finley whose guilty con sciences made cowards of them both fled to the protecting wing of Indianas Governor who is estab lishing a refuge for criminals we rise to ask how any decent law abiding Republican of this or another Y county can endorse such a course To Many InquirersNo there is no provision for filling by elect ion a vacancy in the office of Lieu tenant Governor Mr Beckham is still Lieutenant Governor and will be Acting Governor until his suc cessor is elected in November and installed in December Should he not run for Governor or run and be defeated he would continue Lieutenant Governor until the en of the term if elected Governor Lieudby such an election and the pre siding officer of the Senate at pres ent Senator Carter of Anderson Lieutenantht1 organization of the Senate WILLIAM S TAYLOR Leading Louisville Republicans are mortified and disgusted at the course of W S Taylor in leaving Kentucky and taking refuge in Indiana They do not hesitate to denounce his cowardly action and say that had he been properly advis ed he would have remained at home Instead of doing so he was easily persuaded by Charles E Sapp to sneakover to Jeffersonville and take a train for Indianapolis a few minutes after hearing the news from Washington that he had no legal claims to the governorship If however Taylor had t taken Judge Bill Yost and several of his Brown advisers along with him and ReIpublicans It is understood exGov Bradley disapproves of the course of Taylor andadvised against his fleeing like a fugitive from justice The fact that Taylor remains in Indiana and declines to face the charges against hit i in Kentucky if there are any formal charges in the way of indict ments places him in an unenviable mavyfriendslonger a factor in the racefor Gov ernor and has weakened himself greatly with his party by his actions on Monday and since that time He promised to face his accusers and now runs away leaving the impression that he is guilty of the charges made against him that he was in theconspiracy to kill Gov Goebel His course has left him without
