William Goebel In the trial for bail McKenzie Todd who was Taylors private secretary and J B Mathews who was assist ant Secretary of State under Powers strengthened corrobor ated the statements of the Repub lican witnesses Todd swore that at the time he issued pardons un der Taylors directions to Caleb Powers and John Davis when the- were Y ready to flee he also issued pardons to W H Culton Chas Finley and Harland Whitaker He also gave very damaging tes timony against Youtsey as the arch conspirator of this terrible crime and fully established the fact that the assassin fired from the office o Caleb Powers to which Youtsey had been given a key by Powers with a knowledge of what was to be done Mathews entered Pow ers office through the transom and found three rifles on the fib or and the window raised about 18 inches with the curtain drawn down Told testifier as to repeated conferences between Taylor Powers and You- sey and also told of the placing rifles in Powers office a few days the Executive Building From the testimony of Golden Culton Valter Day Todd and many other Republicans No sane man how ever blinded by political prejudice can deny but that a preconcerted plot to take the life of Gov Goeb has been completely established and that by the evidence of Republicans themselves The telegrams printed on the first page shows be yond doubt the preparations to do what way done The friends of Hon James B McCreary are urging him to become a candidate for Governor this fall He filled the executive chair so able from 1876 to 1880 that he won the merited title of the Model Governor However we s ermi that he will decline the honor Gov Beckham will be the nominee McCreary has ever been the free of the people laboring in season and out of season for their benefit He has ever been their strong and able champion and at the coming state convention we expect to see him sent as delegate from the state atlarge to the Kansas City con vention He deserves it and no doubt will receive it James Howard of Clay county charged with complicity in t murder of Gov Goabel has sur rendered himselt to Sheriff White of Clay conuty The Sherift an his prisoner left London at 10 oclock Egyptian tea be ing used either for medicine or bait We are expecting Col Thomp sons fishing militia down from Mt Vernon to spend a few days this week Everybody remembers their visit last year Our dreamer sawin a vision a new railroad being constructed from this place to M keeI all the material was being taken from our county A large foundry was in the Sycamore bottom from here the tools were hauled up to the grade on the head of Brush creek lumber was cut for bridges and ties were coming trom all di rections as the new Company was taking black oaks and in his vision as the grade was ready the heavy hammers of the forge were heard drop drop drop down at the Sycamore gate and spikes rails fishplates bolts and nuts were ready to lay the track The ballast and abutment stone was com ing from the towering cliffs all around us and by a chemical pro cess the fireclay bank near Pine Hill made the paint So the home industry caused our dreamer to smile awake and when he thought it over he said It is all light iti c6uld be done 1JBut we think he shaded the iron ore business a little for this community For fire life and accident in surancej call at the SIGNAL office E S ALBRIGHT Agent
