Judge Emmett Fields A writ of error was prayed for by Taylor and was granted by Chief Justice Bazelrigg and the case now thewUnited States The attorneys for Gov Beckham will at once file a demurrer as soon as the case is passedup and we are confident the contention of the Democrats will again be sustained For the bent fit of our numerous readers we will review some of the points in this great case which is ofso much in terest to the people The L gi lat ure met on the 3rd day of January and on the third day a contest board was selected as is provided by the Constitution and Statute That r board after taking the oath heard the evidence introduced by Gov Taylor and by Mr Goebel and re ported to the Legislature on the 2nd of F ferurary in favor of Mr Goebel that report was then con firmed by the Senate and House separately and jointly However on soth day of January that gallant leader of the common people was shot down by an assassin while doing his duty in going to the Senate receiving a wound from which he died on February 3rd On Jan uary sist the day following the as sassination of Senator Goebel Gov Taylor declared the Legislature adjourned until February 6th at which time it was co meet in our sister town of London The Court of Appeals through six of its seven Judges declared that Gov Taylor hadno right and that the order of adjournment was absolutely void Remember two Republicans of the bench concur with the Democratic Judges There was no meeting of the Legislature in the state house from the 2nd day of February un til the 19th day of the same month but the Democrats recognizing the fact that Taylor hadno authority- or power to adjourn that body held regular meetings in the Capitol ho tel because the state house was held by armed soldiers by order ot Tay lor and the Legislature was dispers ed at the point of their bayonets from that place and chased by blue coated partisan up and clown the street or Frankfort No sane Re Republican can now deny but that we were in the right and clearly so for ifwe had not been Judges Burnam and Guffy Repof that bench would certainly have never voted in favor of Gov Beckham After the legislature had voted in favor ot Senator Goebel and Mr Beckham they were immediately sorn in That act made Goebel the legal Governor and Beckham l Lieutenant Governor and Mr Taylor a private citizen You no tice we say Gov Taylor and such he was until the regular constitutional authorities passed on his title The highest court of this State holds that the proper tribunal passed on the merits of the contest j that the Legislature was the only constitutional tribunal which could sactupoii the question and that it iitt deIcidham The Democrats s have had the law and right on their side from the beginning and have made no movement which has not been warranted by thevlajw and upheld by the various Courts of law During all this wading nblood talk in the midst of threats and incendiary speeches and acrual assassination the Democrats have simply invoked the law willing at all times and under all circumstan ces to abide the law and by it they have been vindicated at every step as is strongly and conclusively shown by this last nonpartisan decision of the highest court of our Ccmmon wealth Let justice be idIingacquiesce in the decision of our courts and obey its mandates For if we do not our tribunals are use less our government a farce onr laws a hiss and a byword and our social fabric a wreck A great storm ol protest is com ing from the Republicans from every part of rile country against the Porto Rican Tariff Bill first passed the House of Congress The Chicago TimesHerald one of the leading Republican paper of the west directs an editorial to Pres McKinley an d says in pert Undo the great wrong to Porto Rico Thus waS thvi grievous blunder committed How grievous and fraught with what dire possibilities not only to the Republican paity but to the country neither Con gress nor the President could have toreseen But they must realize now that the tariff section in the Porto Rican Bill has aroused a storm throughout the country that will not down If Congress and the President persist in their present course nothing can save the Republcan party from defeat next November It vvill surely cost them the House of Representatives and it may cost them the presidency But one course is open to the Republican party Let it face the situation with the onlv spirit that can compel respect in the presence ofa stupendous and humiliating blunder Let it acknowledge the mistake andfmake haste to regain popular confidence by undoing the contemplated wrong to Porto Rico Senator Davis Rep of Minnesota chairman of the committee on Foreign Relatives has offered an amendment in the senate establish ing
