Lashbrook Meets a Horrible Death He ifTaken From the Custody of the Sheriff and His Deputies by an Infuriated Mob A Rope in Thrown Over His Head and While Pleading for Mercy Brushwood and Timber is Plied About Him and Lighted by Many Willing Hands Maysville Ky Dec 7Negro mur derer Dick Coleman arrived at 1030 Wednesday morning under a special guard of deputies sworn in by the sheriff including Detective Fitzger ald Constable Dawson Chief of Po lice Donovan all of the police force and two deputy sheriffs When they arrived at the court house they were met by a mob of fully 1000 people headed by James Lashbrook the hus band of the murdered woman and went immediately up Second street through the central portion of the city to the hill followed by fully five thousand of the citizens of this city and county This is the first time anything of this kind ever happened in this city and the excitement is in tense All was done that was possible by the sheriff and his guard to pre vent a lynching but in the face of such a mob of people irrespective of color it was useless to attempt to do anything save deliver him up which was done They grabbed him and threw a rope over his head and took him up above the city and strung him up The poor wretch could be heard above the cries of the mob pleading for his he but the mob only heard the cries of Mr Lashbrook and the vengeance they meted out to him was just the thing About 250 were at the C d O train Tuesday night expecting him but as he failed to come they waited for him Wednesday morning There isno telling what would have been done had they succeeded in getting him in jail as there would have undoubtedly been several killed in the attempt to storm the jail doors The mob carried Coleman to a small hollow near the railroad tracks where they bound him tightly to n young sapling Then they heaped a huge pile of brush wood and timber around him and fired the stack while his eyes rolled horribly Some one cut out his eyes and in a moment his head rolled around and he was be lieved to be dead Coleman said 15 minutes before he was set afire that he had nothing to say His death was slow and writh ing in terrible agony he was hooted and glared at by the people standing on the edge of the pit Many women were present He died at 1050 am Tlie scene was an awful one and around the funeral pyre were 10000 maddened people headed by the hus band of the dead woman A dozen torches were applied simultaneously and huge tongues of fire swept up and around the agonized wretch ColemniiM Crime Colemans crime was a most revolt ing one He enticed Mrs Mary Lash brook into a shed on the pretense of looking at some work and knocked her senseless with a club He then asaulted her She showed signs of returning consciousness and he ran to his room got a razor and cut her throat Again she revived and he l ended her misery with a blow from an ax lIe jumped on a horse and riding to a field calmly told his vic tims husband that some one had killed her He was arrested later and before Lashbrook suspected that he was the murderer he was put on a train and taken to the Covington jail He made a complete confession of the fiendish crime to a Post reporter on his arrival He is only 20 years old and has- a pleasant face Mrs Lashbrookwas beautiful and a society favorite in Maysville DEATHoF SENATOR HAYWARD Ue Was Elected to the Senate After a Bitter Contsbut Passed Away Before Taking His Feat NEBRASKA CITY Neb Dec 8United States Senator Hayward died at 620 Tuesday morning He was 59 years old and lived in Nebraska City for 32 years Although a lawyer by profession he made bis wealth largely through investments in ands in Nebraska and Kansas His lection to the United States enate was his first appear nee in national politics He was lefeated for governor bypoynter two ears ago reducing the fusion majori from 18000 to 3000 When the last republicanor Hayward announced his candidacy r the United States senate and the bit which followed was one of the terest in the history of the state t long drawn out caucus 1d lock ky resulted lu bi election WILL BE RENEWED The OppoHitioii to Gen Wheeler Taking His Sent in the Home of Representatives Washington Dec 12The opposi tion to Gen Wheelers taking his seat as a member of the house of represen tatives from Alabama is to be renew ed Bailey of Texas whose resolu tions last year brought out a report from the house judiciary committtee that a military and a congressional office could not be held at the same time Gen Wheeler is now in the Philippines but ithas been understood that he would return to take his seatThe sergeantatanns has over 2000 to the credit of the Alabama member covering salary from March 4 last to date but Gen Wheeler has not asked for the amount and has expressed an unwillingness to sign the certificate usually required of members in the settlement of their accounts Considerable sums are also held for Messrs Campbell Ill Col son Ky Robbins Pa and Gen Wheeler who served in the last con gress and also in the army and as the accounts of the old congress are being closed these latter sums were last week turned back into the treas Murder of Catharine Ging In 1S94 at Minneapolis Minneapolis Minn Dec 12Claus- A Blixt who pleaded guilty to the murder of Catherine Ging in 1894 and was sentenced for life Monday filed application for a full pardon First that he is not guilty of mur der or of any crime Second that the real perpetrator- of the crime was Harry Hayward and that the deed had been committed before he had any knowledge of the crime Third that he was drugged when going with said Harry Hayward that night and would not under any circumstances have been coerced if it had not been for the medicine given him by Hayward Signed by Two Election Commissioners For the Time Being In Ended One of the Most Bitterly Contested Gubernatorial Campaigns in the State Frankfort Ky Dec 10At 945 Saturday morning the election certi cate of William S Baylor was signed by the election commissioners and he was declared to be the governor elect of KentuckyThe figures of the vote filed with Secretary of State Finley are Taylor 193714 Goebel 191331 Tay lors plurality 2383 The operation which ended for the time being at least the bitterly fought gubernato rial contest was conducted in the simplest manner The majority opin ion of Commissioners Pryor and Ellis and the minority opinion of Commissioner Poyntz which were published Saturday morning were not read as was the original intention The three commissioners walked first to the office of the clerk of the state su preme court where they filed two opinions They then passed into the office of the secretary of state Clerk Chenault of the board of commissioners read the figures showing that the republican candidates for offices on the state ticket had received the larg est number of votes and then certi ficates of election were signed at once that of Mr Taylor being first on the list There were only 14 people in the room at the time and of this number only two were there as idle spectatorsThere no crowd around the building and no interest manifested in the work save by those engaged in it and those who stood looking on The certificates as soon as signed were filed with the secretary of state and certificates will be issued to the elected men at once by Gov Bradley Late Friday night when the deci sion had gone forth to the public Commissioner Ellis upon whose shoulders the greatest part of the work of preparing the opinion had fallen discussed the matter freely This has been a hard thing for me he said his eyes inflamed by loss of sleep and the heavy lines in his face bearing eloquent witness to the truth of his statement It has been a hard thing for all of us I wish how ever that all the people of the couii try knew how nobly Judge Pryor has acted in this matter and how conscientiously he has done what he considered his duty He is a great man one of the greatest in my opin ion that Kentucky has ever produced and I am sure his conduct in this case has been another piece of his long and honorable career as a public officer Speaking for myself continued Mr Ellis I say frankly I did not like to do this thing but under the law and the evidence there is nothing else I can do and be an honest man Why I was an original Goebel man I was a Goebel man long before he received the nomination and I am a Goebel man now I can go beyond that and say I am a Goebel partisan I have always been a partisan in politics a rank partisan and it would give me greater pleasure than I can express to be able to declare for the demo crats in this thing but I cant do it The proceedings before the board were so overwhelmingly in favor oy the republicans and they had so much the best of the arguments that it is almost idle to discuss the affair There was to the minds of Judge Pryor and myself only one thing to do and that we have done I know there are plenty of men who think that strong democratic partisan as 1 have always been I should have remained a democratic partisan and voted otherwise How can I do that How can I commit such a rape on my reputation and conscience as that Viewed from the legal standpoint which in things like this is the only standpoint I have done what my conscience and my long career as a law yer tell me is right and I will do oth erwise for no man nor upon any con sideration The statements made by Mr Ellis have been upheld by his conduct from first to last throughout the canvass He did all of the questioning of the atorneys and seemed at every stage to be most anxious to obtain the truth impartial to both sides Mr Goebel was apparently in the best of humor aster being told that Mr Taylors certificate had been signed Commissioner Poyntz declined to sign the republican certificates ol election saying that he stood by the opinion he had rendered and could not consistently do so He consented to sign the that affi ants believed the free exercise of the right of franchise would be in terrupted and that there was great danger that breaches of the peace and riots would occur on the day of election that it would be necessary to strengthen the civil authori ties by the employment of military force But the affiants went fur ther and advised the Executive that the military torce could not be Safely placed under the command- of the Mayor Sheriff Jailer or con fidence of the police The law di1 rests when the military is callcdI cut it shall be placed command of the civil authorities cf the county except when marshal law is declared But in this case up on the affidavits interested partisans and although the Mayor Sheriff Jailer and Chief of Police are honorable gentlemen and civil officers acting under oath if appears that the soldiers were called out to resist rather than strengthen the civil authorities and that too without theTGovernor decjar ing marshal law J But the also says that soldiers were required to carry into effect t certain orders issued by Judge Toney which orders the Court of Appeals declare were illegal and void nt9rsaY51Itpetition signed by some 350 citizens and an affidavit by a justice of the peace telegraphed to him that troops were necessary there His information that there too the Mayor Sheriff Jailer Chief of Police and Marshal were aidiitg and abetting call into service the military to resist the legally elected and acting civil officers of the County of Keiiton and City of Covington Why Who can say it was not because the officials were Democrats while the tele oacitizens were Republicans The third grounds that the Re publicans hadan immense co ruption fund how it was raised and how it was used is known by all menThe fifth the illegally issuing of mandatory orders by certain Circuit Judges against election officers has already been refered to as having been decided by the Court of last resort as illegal and voidIt is not only true that the tis sue ballots were resorted to for the purpose of ascertaining whether the floater had delivered the goods but in counties where these ballots were not in use other schemes and devices were employed by which the Honest Election Leaguers would know their money was not paid for something they did not get This was not an electiou by the secret ballot as has already been shown by proof unquestioned in many of the counties it was not an election when the voter free from intimidation was permitted to cast his ballot for the candidates of his choice as the proof in the City of Lousville and many other places abuudeutly shows But it was an election by bribery intimi datiou force and fraud If it had not been thresult would have been different by many thousand votes With anything like a fair election the Democratic ticket would have been elected by a large tbeIwere candidates And now with the facts as the proof already taken shows and the law as declared in the opinions rendered by the Court of Appeals and the State Election Board and the right as shown from every source on their side the Democratic candidates owe it to themselves their party and their State to contest for the offices to which they were legally elected PRESIDENT McKiuleys message to Congress last week was both long and voluminous He paid ahigh tribute to the late VicePresident Mr Hobart The President comes straight out for the gold standard In the StLouis Convention that nominated Maj McKinley the platform 4n ternational agreement ExSpeak er Reed says if the millionaires want the gold standard they must pass it during the coming session of Congress The greater part of the message deals with Porto Rico Hawaii and the Philippines but no definite recommendations for the future government of those faroff islands are proposed For Porto Rico he suggests a tempor airy civil government with a Leg islative and Executive branch to be appointed by the President Nothing is said of Ole future gov eminent of Hawaii save the immer diatei establishment of a Federal Court Ve were greatly in hopes the President would indicate a poll cy for the fepossessions but there isnt a word or sentence that promises local selfgovernment for f the islands He asks for an increase in the navy that a cable be extended to Japan that changes be made in the Civil Service rules that where aliens are concerned the Federal authorities sshould be given jurisdiction in lynching cases and to support the gold standard the Treasury be empowered to sell United States bonds and to employ such other effective means as may be necessary LAST Tuesday Wm O Brad leys term of office expired and Gen Taylor was inaugurated Gov ernor of Kentucky Like all of us who are of the Dearth earthy he has made his mistakes and some of them grave and egregious He was right in opposing Hunter but wrong in ringing the fire alarm and calling out his militia Brady ley has a wonderfully inordinate ambition but his vicePresidential boat sunk with marvelous rapidity in 96 and he became the laughingstock of all Kentuckians But for our part we greatly admire him andwould like to see him attached to thejVIcTCiuley kite in 1900 He has tried to do what an honest con science told him was right in the execution of the law He has opposed those things which he eavb ored to upbuild and strengthen the cause of right But his latest bad break was his worst and that was without any call from a civil officer and in a time of a profound peace to go in person to the City ot Louisville and order out his armed soldiers with glittering bayonets and mounted guns on election day But with all his faults his black guardismhis vile language and his vulgar stories he is able wise and brilliant and without question one of district will get 87 District Su pervise John Bright of Stanford willhave plenty to do hut he will select strictly good men to fill these important posts t THE British attacked the town of tormburg but were compelled b the Boers to retreat In the fierce battle over 600 British were wound ed and missing the retreat being so hasty that the exact number of the dead could not be ascertained ALL this night between Floyd and Ed Cnadwell and City Marshal jSllige Bingham and his deputies Henry and Hartford Trouble arose over the Chadwells shooting off their guns and the marshal and his deputies trying to make arrests Hartford chased a man whom he thought was Floyd Chadwell 500 yards both shooting at each other and which resulted in the killing of Deputy Marshal Hartford Hartford received one shot through the heart by the man he was pursu ing and one through the back from some one who was following him and who was assisting in making the ar rest of the Chadwells City Marshal Bingham chased Ed Chadwell around the corner of Lau rel avenue about 300 yards from the depot and jack on a little side street and caught him back of Mr Bow cocks barber shop The governor was wired for part of a militia company located here but no answer had been received late Saturday night Everything is quiet here now but further trouble may be expected at any time It is learned that Floyd Chadwell arrived
