Ky Aug 28The banner meeting of the present cam paign in Kentucky was held in this city this afternoon when between 4000 and 5000 peo pIe attended the speaking of Senator Goebel and Mr Blackburn i Senator Goebel was introduced by Judge Robert Kodes and spoke as follows T believefYoung Brown to launch the campaign of the bolters against the Democratic party 1 wish Hon John Young Brown acre here today There was not a single free railroad train there was nova single free ticket there was not r a single free lunch to help swell this proportionsbutk here IlALtGXERS ARRAIGNED Before I go into the body of what I have to say I want to say something about certain statements that were made in this community some weeks since I never assaulted a man in my life unless he first assaulted me But I ask no quarter I fear no foe Referring to ofae of his Kenton county foes Goebel pointed out that he had beaten him in one election in every precinct and on a total vote of 7 to 1 This man remarked Goebel says 1 have not changed a particle in 20 yearsIf I had been a drunkard and de bauchee said the speaker I too y Avouldyhaye changed and carry ivith ine a face similar to a pf 1 cancerous beefsteak He may talk a utm brother bufcXnever had one rsf t enttentvLry appla e1 i f andR Another opponent from the mouth of the Licking he charged with having demanded money while in the legisla ture from the Lottery Co and 1 have the originalcopy of the letter at home added Meyers drew a stipend from the lottery company and his present stand was due to the fact that he Goebel had a bill passed tak ing away that stipend This man had been defeated two years ago in Kenton county by 2 000 votes He referred to the fact that John C Droege bolters candidate for treasurer had charged this man with attempted bribery and the latter escaped the grand jury on a technicality The opposition of other legisests which he had aided in passing Along with these scorching remarks on purificationists Hallam Myers and Droege he said There is also YoH Mackoy of Cov ington He was chairman of the Palmer and Buckner and the Hindman committees of Kenton county in 1896 and 1897 he was a member of the board of directors of a turnpike corn pany when I secured the passage of a law which resulted in cutting its tolls in half and 1 thereby interfered with his business somewhat I think you ought to know the reasons that ani mate these assaults upon me As to the Louisville Dispatch and Post Senator Goebel said The Dispatch is owned by the L S N Railroad Co and every free cory of that paper and the Louisville Post is paid for out of the coffers of the L N RAILROADS AND BILLS He dwelt at some length on public acts of his which had aroused the hostility of the ailway corporations Senator Goebel discussed his fellow servants bills lie said in explanation that the liablity of the railroad corporation to its employes for injuries in the service should be the same as it is to the traveler If thr ugh the neglect of an employe a stranger is injured the company is responsible but if one employe is injured by another in responsibleshould be the same to the employe who hazards his life every day as it is to the ordinary traveler I have had several letters said Senator Goebel asking me what was my position with reference to double headers and whether i would recom- mendj to the legislature if elected gov t ernor the passage of a law prohibiting the running of double headers I want againstJdoubleme explain what is meant by double headersIt double the nnmber of cars in one train to which there are two en gines and one crew of men The em ployes on the second engine have no chance to in case of a wreck They arc oxedup as in a box car and that is why the employes oppose it They think their safety outweighs the saving to the railroad company by dis pensiug with an extra crew This is the law in some other states and should be here If any citizens de serve protection it is the railroad em loyes Now if this is unjustifiable Hostility I want to confess my guilt Senator Goebel said that during the strike in 1891 some railroad men were thrown into jail and he was called upon by the representatives of the railway order to defend them at Cov ington He not only did this but also went on their bonds got them acquit ted and without charging them In fee He was glad he had done that and would do it again If that was unjus tifiable hostility to the railroads then guiltThe eight hour employment law and in the gen eral assembly he made an effort to secure the passage bf a law limiting the hours they would be required to serve And I am for such a laity now he added If 1 get to be governor I shall continue to favor legislation qf the same character because I believe it is right If there are any railroad employes in this audience I hope they clearly understand my position in these matters iAs 7Q J noWN Speaking of John Young Brown Sen ator Goebel said I charged srVeral days since that a feW hours before I was nominated publicationTimes suggesting to the state convention his own nomination by the very delegates that nominated me I dont care to add anything towhat I said ex cept that I didnt get the information from Senator McChord who refused to answer a letter which Iwrote to him upon the subject When Gov Brown tried to get the nomination from the same delegates that nominated me complaintIfBrown Stone or Hardin I would have been the first to march up loud ap plause to the footlights in Mu ic hall andcall upon my friends to support the nominee The contortions of certain candidates make me smile They seem to think I was running for amusement Each one thought I ought to have giv en the nomination to him Laughter Brown seems to think I sent Me Chord and Woodson to his office to of fer him the nomination but Brown can not find a mau in Kentucky who willsay I didnt try my very best to get that nomination and if anybody thinks I will not try John G Carlisle there was tunneled out for Bryan a majority that was 500 votes greater than that which the county gave to Cleveland in 1893 The speaker said that during the 1896 campaign when asked for a con tribution to the campaign fund he gave 5700 in cash I dont know whether any other person in Kentucky gave 5700 for Bryan said Mr Goebel but if there YoungBrownThe speaker proceeded into an ar raignment of republican principals and republican methods Senator Goebel said addressing him self to any discontented persons who might be present that if they found any good reason in the proceedings of the Louisville convention to cause them to oppose any one for them not to vote for him but to vote for the uptoSenator Blackburn in a ringing speech electrified his hearers He said Goebel had told them that the fight was whether the Democraticor the lie publican party would control for the next four years in Kentucky but he as serted that it was a question pf control for the next 40 years He declared that manyboltingof the public could not be diverted from the fact that the fight was be tween Goebel and Taylor and not be tween Goebel and Brown or Brown and Taylor French o minority of the delegates but to the work ofall the delegates as well for the plat form was adopted by a unanimous vote When John S Rhea report ed and read the platform John B Thompson moved to amend by striking out the sections relating to the Election La wand the McChoid Bill but the amendment got no vote save possibily that of Mr Thompson himself and the report was then adopted without a
