receive the next outward mail Mr Stevens referred to is the navy departments agent at London to dis-¬ tribute all of the mail of the war ships in European waters so he will see to it that the Olympia receives hers as soon as she passes the Suez canal It is estimated at the navy depart- ¬ ment that Dewey will reach the United States in time for a national demon- ¬ stration on the 4th of July next The Olympia will not come under full steam but nevertheless she should make the run to New York in about 55 days from Manila That she is to come to New York is nearly certain as shown by the following response made by Sec- ¬ retary Long to the urgent message of invitation to Dewey from Mayor Van Wyck of New York It may be stated that this was sent before the notice was sent to Dewey that he might ome home at once ¬ terrific explosion that hurled timbers into the air filled the atmosphere with flying debris and shook the country for six miles around the pulverizing and glazing buildings of the Kings smokeless powder plant at this place were completely demolished Friday morning at 030 There were no employes in the plant at the time but many were on their wajT for the da3s work and had the explosion occurred half an hour later many lives would have been sacrificed As it was two employes were within 100 feet of the factory when the explosion took place They were stunned by the awful concussion but escaped Houses in the vicinity were injury shaken almost from their foundations not a whole window was left in the neighborhood and other buildings of the great plant were damaged some¬ is un known The three men who were so close to the mills when the explosion came went on duty early and were sup posed to start the machinery in the different buildings They were the last employes at
