tank blew up and tore the boat to pieces The Pansy met the Maud with Jones and Taggart on board The latter visited the wreckage and identified it as part of the Paul Jones No bod ¬ ¬ ¬ ¬ ject of expansion are expected to be made How much time will be given to the treaty in executive session will depend upon whether the committee on for¬ eign relations considers it in the inter- ¬ est of the treaty to press consideration There is an effort to arrange a com ¬ promise which would permit speedy upon treaty action the but successful is not if this the indications are for considerable delay Two compromises are suggest ¬ ed One of these is for a modification of the treaty or the adoption of a reso ¬ lution declarator against the permanent holding of the Philippine archipelago and the other is for a modification of the army reorganization bill on lines desired by the treaty opponents It is not yet possible to state whether cither course will be pursued The time of the house this week except Monday which has been set aside for the consideration of District of Col umbia business will be devoted to the army reorganization bill The consid eration of this bill which is regarded as pre eminently the most important ¬ ¬ ¬ ¬ ¬ ¬ peneral measure to come before con- ¬ gress at this session has been delayed by the illlness of Chairman Hull of the military affairs committee He has re- ¬ covered sufficiently to pilot the meas- ¬ ure however and the house has formal- ¬ ly agreed to take up its consideration on Tuesday The general debate not including three night sessions is to continue 15 hours This is as far as the agreement goes It includes no provision for a final vote There exist a wide variety of opin ions upon the proposition to inci ease the standing army It has a strong ¬ majority of the republicans behind it and it comejinto tb house with the indorsement of the presidents mes sage practically as an administration measure The democrats and populists are in- ¬ tensely hostile to the whole proposi- ¬ tion and intend to fight it to the last ditch They will have some support from the republican side The opposi tion however do not desire to embar¬ rass the government and are willing to provide for a temporary increase in the army of 50000 men in ac-¬ cordance with the provisions of the substitute bill offered by the minority of the committee Or they are willing ¬ to authorize the continuance temporarily of the present war strength of the regular army 62000 anything in fact to prevent the creation of a per manent increase In this they have the fishermen who have known of it for more than a week The launch exploded they say on or about January 6 near Bird island 2nd everything goes to show that all on board were killed at once or drowned soon after The boat was operated by a gasoline engine and it is now recall ed that she met with several accidents from fire on her way down the river It is regarded as certain that this en- ¬ gine exploded but from what cause will probably never be known The force was such that it not only blew off the pilot house but split the yacht in two The men who brought this definite news are engaged in the oyster fisher ies off the east Louisiana coast Last Friday they visited Bird island and found a lumber schaoner ashore also a pleasure yacht near the island The latter they say was split in two by an internal explosion The men boarded the yacht and explored her cabin breaking open the trunks and taking from them a lot of fine female apparel and keys and whatever other property they discovered on board Although their discovery occurred a week ago the men did not come to Venice the nearest settlement until Friday when they had to do so to lay in a supply of provisions In Venice thev turned the keys over to a store- ¬ keeper by whom tnese facts were made known The keys bear a tag inscribed Co Indianapolis Fletcher The clothing taken from the trunk by the men is that of Miss Taggart No
