an address said in ¬ ¬ Chicago Dec 17 Mrs Johanna Kewell Jost her life Friday saving that of her daughter The New¬ ell family lived at 1S19 Orleans below a livery stable which was burned late Friday afternoon There was only one stairway leading to the street from the apartments in which the fam-¬ ily lived Mrs Newell was near the head of this stairway when alarm was given and might easily pushed Instead of do ¬ her way to the street ing so she ran into her rooms to save her little girl By the time she was able to return to the stairway it was in flames and all escape was cut off The woman then ran to a second story window opening upon an area in which some men were standing and threw the girl out One of the men caught it by the skirt and placed it upon the ground unhurt Mrs Newell then jumped from the window The men tried to catch her but were unsuc-¬ cessful and she struck the concrete heavily sustaining injuries from which she died within two hours gin Thursday and Extend Until and a chanpe in the race of life would be wanting to millions of human beings who to day call this nation noble and who I trust wiU live to call it blessed Thus far we have done our supreme duty Shall wc now when the victory won in war is written in the treaty of peace and the civilized world applauds and waits in expectation turn timidly away from the duties imposed upon the country by its own great deeds And when the mists fade and we see with clearer vision may we not go forth rejoicing in a strength which has been employed solely for humanity and always been tempered with justice and lost only one hog each On the other hand 1107 hogs in other droves were served and not subjected to the serum treatment Of these 87S died showing a loss of 79S hogs out of every 100 The cholera serum is pro cured by keeping apart for treatment n animal a horse or a cow and in jecting into its blood a small amount ol the blood of a cholera diseased hog This will sicken the subject but he will recover when another dose will be administered and so on for a time until finally his blood becomes so impregnated as to render him practically cholera proof Then his blood is let and the clot drawn
