tional encampments have become fa- ¬ mous attracting visitors from all parts of the union both military and civ ¬ ilian The first post of the Grand Army was organized at Decatur 111 April 6 I860 and 7106 posts Its annual encampments are attend ¬ ed by fully 100000 people and made the occasion of a spontaneous display of patriotism vhieh must be intensely gratifying- to the grizzled veterans The encampment of 1S97 held at Buf ¬ falo N Y was in every respect a suc ¬ cess but it is predicted that this years gathering which will meet at Cincin ¬ nati a point much more cen tralty lo ¬ cated than Ingalls president of the Big Four and Chesapeake Ohio railroads at their head On the occasion of his coming visit tbe committee will be able to outline to a large extent exactly what will be done in the way of receiving and entertain- ¬ ing the old veterans and the thousands of friends who will come with them to Cincinnati in September of this year - at Indianapolis Ind few days ago named the Grand hotel as national headquarters and he and his family and his staff will occupy about 12 large rooms in this hostelry This hotel will also be headquarters for the two national presidents of the womens auxiliary organizations the Womens Belief Corps and the Ladies of the G A B Parties began contracting for accommodations in the hotels early last fall and some of the hotels have already disposed of every room But Cincinnati has fortunately a large number of good hotels and itisbelieved there will be no lack of facilities in that direction As for the veterans who prefer to camp out with a mattress only between their bodies and the floor and their grips for pillows two classes of free quarters will be provided The most interesting by all means is Camp Sher man Adjoining the popular summer resort Chester park is a large level field of many acres extent which is to be transformed into a tented city with a careful sewage system with electric lights and city water Here it is proposed to care for 40000 veterans The many buildings in Chester park will be used as auxiliaries to the camp which has been named in honor of Gen Wil liam Tecumseh Sherman The large club house will be used as a restaurant where the veterans can get a square meal for a quarter or lunches at popular prices The amusement hall will be available for campfires and reunions Cincinnati has about- 70 sclhool build ings The use of all cf these has been donated by the board of education They will be transformed into lodging houses for the week of September 5 Al ready the committee on school build ings of whiich Capt B E Monford president of the board of education and member of the national council of administration G A B is chair man has assigned to quarters in 2C school buildings about 12000 veterans It is expected that at least 40000 vet erans can be comfortably lodged in all the school buildings of the city The committee on halls and meeting places Col Max Silberberg- chairman has
