standpoint- If the Executive is to be under Nationalism Mr Bryan Mr Roosevelt wants it undrestood that he is to recognize himself as a steward of the public welfare Why single out the execut ive Are nut all public officials stewards of the public welfare in the same sense If the word steward is intended to mean the same as the word represen tative then the legislative and ju dicial departments should feel the same responsibility as the executive department If hjwever Mr Ruose velt uses the world steward in a different sense and means that while other departments of government are to be representative the executive de partment is to exercise a fatherly and act independently of the wishes of the people but for their good of course he is advancing a doctrine that is as dangerous as it Tuesday brought such low prices that the officials to supervise the sale were jtterly disgusted The pries obtained ranged from 6 c to 17Jc At the Globe warehouse 15 hogs heads were sold at b60 to 9 13 hogs heads at 960 to 1225 10 hogsheads at 1325 to 16 At the Farmers and Shippers warehouse 15 hogsheads brought from 5 to 970 17 hogsheads from 10 to 1275 and 7 hogsheads from 13 to 725 The bidding was quiet and spiritless and there did not seem much anxiety to purchase From the beginning the sales were a disappointment to in charge After completing the sales at the Globe the entire crowd to the Farmers and Shippers where the auctioning was resumed The lack of interest was saidfto be due to the fact that there are but few buying orders in the market just now The tobacco sold yesterday came from Switzerland county Ind Nicholas vine Ky and Cynthiana Ky adjourned LOUISVILLE TUESDAY Tuesday marked the first days sale in the Falls City The price realized was slightly less than 12 cents a pound The greater part of the Burley sold at Louisvilla was taken buyers of the American Tobacco Company Of the 1909 Burley sales aggregating 308 hogsheads were reported One hundred and three hogsheads of 1910 Burley were also sold and the fact that this was thrown on the market sooner than expected is said to have accounted for disappointing prices on the pooled crop of 1909 Expectations are that at least 000000 pounds of the 1909 Burley pool will be sold on the Louisville auction breaks LEXINGTON TUESDAY The first days sale in Lexingon was held at four warehouses x A total of 256000 pounds was offer ed and prices ranged from 440 to 19 a hundred with the average at about 8 cents There was conisderable low grade stfr and very little of the color ed grades on the market Many far mers sent their tobacco to market in an untfit condition and the buyers were slow about taking those at any pricesCINCINNATIWEDNESDAY The second days selling of the Bur ley Tobacco Societys pooled crop re suIted in better prices and more lively competition among the bidders It al so marked the first purchase by the American Tobacco Company W D Spalding representing the American purchased one hogshead at 18 The sale was marked by livelier and faster bidding than was in order on the opening day and many times the bidders became highly excited and called off their bids in fast and furios order The tobacco offered brought fairly goud prices and showed signs of booming later in the week when the higher grade of tobacco is placed on sale LOUISVILLEWEDNESDAY A total of 125 hogsheads were offer ed on the Louisville market and prices realized on the whole appeared to show improvement over the sales of Tuesday remained far frfltn the liking of the Burley Suciety The tobacco sold came from Scott Franklin Mercer and Shelby counties and was distributed among a number of warehouses The finer grades of bright tobacco were the best sellers and these were generally about cent higher than on Tuesday Common and medium red leaf bhowed no change while low grades were inclined to be easier Low grades however were commoner than the day before which in a measure account for the the tone of the market The highest price realized was 1825 while the average was some where between 11 and 12 Receipts of the pooled tobacco are increasing and prospects are for a larger offering tomorrowNew burley was in more liberal supply 221 hogsheads being offered It was very poor in quality in fact the poorest offered on the breaks since the season opened The American Tobacco Company took a good Car Three Attempts weie made Monday afternoon by George Clinton Douglas a small boy of Scott county who was visiting near Station No 37 on the ParisLexington traction line to wreck an interurban car To satisfy his de sire to see a car jump the track the boy had driven a railroad spike be tween the rail joints The car was in charge of Motorman Garret Reynold and Conductor George Cook A pas senger got off at Station 37 and when the car started Motorman Reynolds noticed a sudden lurching of the front trucks while those in the rear seemed to strike some object in a noticeable way as they passed over The run was continued to Paris and Reynolds decided to investigate on the return trip When he got to the place he found a railroad spike bent over tbe rails Had the car not stop oed on the trip to Paris it would have been going at a good rate of speed and no doubt would have the track Further investigation revealed the fact that a new spike had been driven between the rails abut forty yards away evidently to catch the car on the return trip At the switch Reynolds informed Motorman Davis and Conductor Elsey of car 106 of the narrow and told them to be on the lookout Motor man Davis ran his car slowly at this point and he saw sticking up plainly between the joints a big spike The matter was reported to the road officials who placed detective on the case who visited the scene of the
