vast importance to the mer chants of Paris in which the Louis vile Nashville Railroad Company are the plaintiffs and the firm of E FSpears Sons are ths defendants was called in the Bourbon county court Wednesday afternoon at 2 oclock The railroad company is seeking to recover the sum of40 to be due as demurrage while the defend ants claim an offset in the loss sustain ed by delay in the setting of loaded alleging that the railroad com trackageNearly merchants especially those handling coal lumber and grain are summoned as witnesses The plaintiff is represented by E M Dickson and Mr Collis of Louisville while the defendants are represented by McMillan Talbott The case will be fought out and itis said will be appealed to the Circuit Beforethe court was ready to go in to the hearing of evidence several legal questions were raised by attor neys in the case which Judge Dundon took under advisement and adjourned court Thursday morning at 10 number of witnesses were examined ters and interviews urging the friends of the national bank and sound cur rency and the gold standard to repeal the restrictions imposed by the act of Congress in 1882 upon the sudden of bank notesfor speculative purposes The of 1882 was passed to protect the country against the arh trary and unexpected contraction arm subsequent expansion of by banks of issue which had resulted in disaster to the whole country In 1881 an aggregate retirement of 1800000i of bank currency had caused a panic and the act was passed to take away from the banks the panicpower The debates in Conrgess at that tim show that even the Republicans had learned to dread the exercise of such a power by the unscrupulous financier of those days But now it is to retsore this panic power by enabling banks to issue asset currency with no security and to substitute the cats and dogs of Wall Street as security for deposits and use the Govenrmfeit bonds which the law has heretofore required as security for de posits as a means of obtaining addi tional notes for circulation thus en abling the Wall Street gamblers to ex pand and contract the currency at will and to make contraction a subterfuge for emptying the National out of Wall Street and the tickers out of the rail road offices and the trouble between the people and the railroads will be vastly diminished It is the gambling of railroad officials that of the
