Colley regiwas supported by the Fifty-eigment, the Sixtieth Rifles and a naval reserve, 1,010 men in all. They were trained soldiers. Kruger and Joubcrt had 2,000 Dutch farmers, familiar with the rifle. The encounter cost Colley 109 men killed aud wounded, and they were picked off in five minutes' time. The Boere lost three. Colley retired to Hatley's Hotel, while the Boers wailed to the west of Majutui Hill. On the night of February 20 Colley thought to surprise his opponents. He led 700 of his men across the the plateau at the foot of Majuba Hill and then to the summit. He had parts of the Fifty-eigregiment, the Ninety-fourt- h Foot, the Sixtieth Rifles, the Ninety-secon- d (Gordon) Highlanders and a naval brigade. They carried three days' provisions and eighty rounds of animation each. Once on the summit they found there a cuplike depression surrounded by piles of stone. Into this they went, confident that they held the gateway to the Transvaal and that when reinforcements came they could easily descend upon their enemies and conquer.
