Michaels church in the presence of a number of friends of the contracting par ties Rev Father Sheridan performing the ceremony after which the happy couple left for a twoweeks bridal trip to Florida The bride who is one of the most pop ular and attractive young ladies in the West End has an extensive acquaintance in the best circles of society all over the city Mr McGrath is one of the best known and highly respected young men in Louisville For many years he has been in business at Seventh and York streets and his place is one of the most popular in the southern part of the city For a long stated that words were inadequate to describe its grandeur and magnitude one would have to see it to properly appreciate it The military display sur passed anything ever witnessed in thisI country The gallant Irish Sixtyninth of New York City and the Pennsylvania soldiers who appeared without their guns were vociferously cheered allalong the line while the dude stayathome Seventh was roundly hissed People in the leading hotels cheered but the hisses rose above the cheering The members looked neither to the right nor to the left but marched steadily on In strik ing contrast was the reception tendered the Sixtyninth which received an ovation along the route of march MrI Rogers says no body of men ever presented a more soldierly appearance When the white hats and green plumes of the band at elsewhere in this paper The Louisville Midway will be in shape andready for visitors on Monday even ing at 7 oclock The gates of the fair will be opened at 2 oclock on Monday and thereafter the big carnival will be open at 1230 oclock Every electric light has been tested and none found de Gent so the grounds at night will be gorgeous with thousands of lights and the Midway will be a fairy land The police and fire services have been inaugu rated and every convenience and comfort that can combine for the welfare and pleasure of the visitor has been arranged and it now only remains for the people of Louisville to show their appreciation of the magnificent enterprise by making this Louisville festival the gigantic suc cess it deserves to be The Louisville Lodge of Elks who un selfishly conceived promoted and devel oped thU grand enterprise have done their share of the work In less than six weeks time this undertaking has been consummated It has been no small task and to the members of the antler tribe in Louisville there is due no small degree of credit for the phenomenal work done and all indications point to a su perb success The general admission to the Louisville carnival is only ten cents which is the smallest yet made for any such concern The route of the parade was announced Thursday by Chief of Staff Borntraeger and is as follows The parade will form on Broadway and will move north on Eighth to Jefferson east on Jefferson to Third north on Third to Market west to Ninth north on Ninth to Main east to Brook south to Market east to Jackson south to Broadway and west to Brook where the column will disband The great column will move at 1 oclock sharp and the start will be made known to the people of Louisville and the thou sands of strangers by the tooting of all the factory and steamboat whistles and the sounding of all the fire bells The official reviewing stand will be at the Floyd and Broadway entrance where Mayor Weaver city officials and the com Nebraska and the Presidents Philippine policy came in for severe criticism President Samuel B Donnelly of the International Typographical Union reports that judging by the progress recent ly made the ninehour work day will be an established rule in every city and town in the country within the next yearThe Executive Committee of Typographical Union No6 of New York inn circular just issued states that persons soliciting funds in behalf of lockedout printers of the Sun are frauds The statement says the unions resources are such that no aid is necessary or has been asked for- President Mitchell Itccently at the Hill of Oran Resolutions Adopted Calling on All Nationalists to Join Hands Demand for Comfortable Homes for Laborers and Acre Allotments RESTORE THE LAND TO THE PEOPLE On Sunday a meeting under the aus pices of the United Irish League was held at time Hill of Oran about midway between Castlerea and Roscommon says a late number of the Dublin Independent The meeting was largely attendedand there was much enthusiasm The chair was taken by the Rev John Dehenyof Ballinahiglish Resolutions were unanimously adopted calling on all time Nationalists of Ros common to join hands cordially for the advancement of the interests of the United Irish League and expressing delight nt the very satisfactory progress of the United Irish League in this part of the country that the work of the Congested Districts Board can not afford a satisfac tory remedy for the condition of the West until the entire province of Connaught is made a schedule district with a view to the purchase for the peoples benefit the enormous grazing tracts of Roscommon which are at present denuded of popula tion pledging themselves to put down that accursed eleven months system which has enabled landlords to deprive the people of the lands and that they would accept no settlement of the land question as final which does not provide the laborers in town and country with comfortable homes mad acre allotments Mr John P Hayden M P said the object of their meeting was to plant tine people of that country on the green fields they saw around them and from which landlordism had driven them The land should be divided up into reasonable sized holdings affording the means of livelihood to those for whom it was cre ated and thus prevent the necessity for so many of their people to leave these shores for less than the cost of the goodsnit- When any of our readers want to make a purchase they should patronize those merchants and houses that employ home labor and endeavor to enhance the business prosperity of Louisville There is more deception practiced in the clothing business than in any other line and when a suit of clothes is desired they should be llattIchants who employ Louisville tailors at remunerative wages and do not have their work done in the sweat shops of New York Many have been deceived and they want their friends to know that better suits can be had for the money from the dealers in readymade clothing than are furnished by those houses without a home that are pulling the public leg for the benefit of English and Scotch products JOSEPH M SCHMIDT Joseph M Schmidt died suddenly Thnsrday morning at his home 1C03 Logan street from the effects of a stroke ofapoplexy He was thirty years ofage and had been the representative in this city of the Indiaropolis Brewing Company Mr Schmidt leaves a wife and four children who have received many messages of condolence from here and elsewhere in their sad bereavement He was a brother of William and John Schmidt and Mrs Semonin for Mayor Ins caused n great deal of discussion in local political circles Those who know Billy Semonin say that he is the strongest possible candidate yet mentioned and the friends of other prospective candi dates admit that he would be very much in the race should he decide to run He WILLIAM J SEMONIN His friends believe he would be a strong candidate for Mayor has a large acquaintance all over the city is one of time best hustlers in his party and is a genial and affable gentleman I llismlniinistratioiioftheofficeofCounty Assessor has stamped him as an executive officer of ability and that he would handle the reins off the city government in great shape none will deny The race is a long time off but Bernoullis friends claim that he is the man to win who could unite all factions of the Democratic party and poll a large Republican vote in addition ROSARY SUNDAY Its Magnificent Observance at Church of St Louis Bertrand Last Sunday being rosary Sunday the first Sunday in October very impressive services were held at St Louis Bertrands church by the Dominican Fathers both morning and afternoon In the morning solemn high mass was sung at 1030 oclock Very Rev Father Logan acting as celebrant Time sermon was delivered by Rev Father Gaffney- In the afternoon solemn vespers were sung nUllsaiel by Fathers Gaffney Pulinks and Weising to a crowd estimated at about 3000 people filling the church to the doors A rosary procession fol lowed in which several hundred little boys and girls of the parish took part the fifteen silk banners in honor of the fifteen mysteries of the rosary being car ried in this procession An able and eloquent sermon on the rosary was then preached by Rev Father Flood who was listened to by the large crowd present with close attention The rosary was then recited followed by benediction of the blessed sacrament at whiclirosaries prayer books scapulars and other religious articles also the blessing of roses was held a pious and beautiful custom which is observed on rosary Sunday every year MAKING MANY FRIENDS Rev John Gastaldi was in the city last week He came to Louisville about a year and a half ago and while here de voted himself to the spiritual welfare of the Italians who up to that time had no regular pastor While fulfilling his many duties he endeared himself to not only his own people but to hundreds of others besides lIe was sent to Bowling Green last April to assist Rev Thomas Hayes While not forgetful of his friends here he has become very much attached to his new mission He has the good wishes of all his acquaintances Growing That the Trophy Will Remain in America THIRD TRIAL WILL BE MADE TODAY Off Sandy Hook during the past week have been taking place the greatest yacht races of the century The cup for which the Shamrock and Columbia are racing is the most important if not the most costly yachting trophy that has ever been con tested for Prom a mere prize in an open regretta which it was on that memorable August day in 1851l it has become a fea ture in yachting circles Time Columbia is acknowledged to be time fastest yacht ever built in America while the Shamrock is far and away the best yacht that has ever sailed in quest of the much soughtfor prize Time lfirst of the races was sailed off Saudy Hook Tuesday before a vast crowd Before the finish line was crossed the wind lulled and the yachts were of John J Keane and Others byJudgeDemocratic Committeeman for the Tenth wardupon the complaint of Harry Bur nett a Republican who charges him with violation of the registration laws Warrants were also issued for the anest of Joe Conuaughton Mike Connoly and aidinginillegally The announcement of the foregoing caused considerable talk in political circles The consensus of opinion is that there must be a mistake as to the charges against Keane who states that they are without any foundation whatever as he was connected in no manner with any such transaction as alleged and he is at a loss to controversy having proven ineffectual in cajoling the Boers and her threats and war preparations to scare them into losing sight of her real purpose she has at last been exposed and bee 1fo11vi ted of falsehood as well The dispatches generally published have emanated from London and stated the demands of England to be the enfranchisement of the Out landers aliens their right to hold tom ce and full protection and equal privileges in their business enter prises and it was sought to impress the general public with the idea that the persistent refusal of the Boers to concede these just de mands would leave England no other alternative but a resort to force to obtain them The firm statesmanlike replies of the Boers despite London censorship have found their way to the public prints lJ and refuted Englfsh falsehood as well as show that England instead of demanding what was right under treaty was making demands in utter violation of treaty provisions that instead of the Boers obstinately refusing just demands they were u l ready to concede all that the treaty t a could be reasonably construed to mean and submit other matters to arbitration under the treatycof 1884 that England failing to estat fish a false understanding of theI I treaty of 1884 repudiated it and was seeking to coerce the Boers I into granting more than the treaty 1884 called for 10f And now comes the last English severely denounced by the professed friend of Dreyfus voted for his acquittal Of course this is only a report since the vote of individual mem bers of a courtmartial like a jury is secret and to divulge it is punishable by law It is therefor not known how the members of thE courtmartial voted but they werE unanimous in recommending wha amounted to remission of penalty pardon which was granted The decision of the School Board to test the compulsory educatiot law in an effort to compel thE parents of colored children to sent them to school is well enough so fa as it goes What about the hundred of white children whose parent put them to work in mills anc factories instead of sending then to school Have these white chil 1I dren no right to education unde the law Must they toil out their lives in ignorance and drudgery iif not worse because their parent need 1 the pittance earned by the little ones In this country at least the child has rights of which ever the parents can not Tyrone from the town laud of Garvaghey four miles distant of an alleged malicious burning of a dwell ing house in that place From the facts to hand it appears that some neighbors discovered the dwelling house occupied by a laboring man named Patrick Bart ley his wife and family enveloped in flames An alarm was raised and Bartley and his wife were rescued from the building Fortunately the either no employment or who have no one to work for them Many hundreds of men are makiug barely enough to put meat and bread into the mouths of their little ones When the severe weather comes coal and clothing will have to be provided This will have to be done by standing off the butcher and the baker These in turn will have to be caught up with necessitating other sacrifices Tis said in the Scripture that the poor you have always but there would be fewer poor if men were more just to say nothing of being merciful When a man or woman by some accident of fortune or politics loses employment set to work to help hint or her into some thing else If we women contribute only ten cents monthly just imagine two small nickels for the comfort of men women and suffering babies in a congre gation of two thousand women there will be 200 a month for the fund What a deal could be done with such a gener ous amount to relieve the distress and misery of our neighbor Many noble women are now talking about this matter and they earnestly ask the cooperation of all earnest workers in every congrega tion to form societies as aids to the St Vincent de Paul where none such exists Let each woman or young lady only do nate ten cents a month for furnishing good new material for clothing and for coal and supplies during the winter and tio one will be poorer but many a bleak fireside Iff among iU always and ever interesting feature has an article on the identity of II- t a ICarroll Malone the famous Irish poetI who wrote The Croppy Boy and other grand ballads His real name the Pilot states was William B McBurnie He emigrated from Belfast to this country and reached Boston in 1845 He died in 1892 but at what place we are not told It was in the Pilot that the Croppy Boy the Irish Emigrants and the Orangemans Wife were first published They almost instantly grew into popular favor in Ireland and are in eluded in all Irish anthologies The pseudonym Carroll Malone was adopt ed by McBurnie probably because it was the custom of the time to write under a fictitious name For many years his real name was not known The style and sentiment of his poetry were so pure and true that it was a matter of much regret that the real name of Carroll Malone was not known to the world The Pilot conies to the assistance of biographers and lovers of Irish music and gives us the family name of this sweet bard May it serve also to revivify the touching strains that have so often awakened love of home and country in the hearts of our forefathers especi fly the Irish Emi grants The estimated that betwetn three and four million women in the United States out ofa population of seventy million souls are earning their own living in a variety of occupations too numerous to mention
