power and influence of one or more Irish men Although prevented at home for several centuries from holding offices they have gone out into the world and proven to be irrepressible rising to emi nence and power in almost every land under the sun says the Duluth Herald- It was an Irishman who liberated Chile and the name of OHtggins is as much revered in that country as the name of Washington is in the United States Until a recent date an Irishman had ruled for years with unquestioned authority as sovereign of Yap one of the Caroline islands Three Presidents of the United States Monroe Iolk and Buchanan were sons of Irish immigrants and it has been a AndrewIThe number of men of Irish blood who have been Governors of our States Senators Congressmen cabinet officers and who have filled other high political offices in this country is legion Washington had no better Generals than the Irishmen Mad Anthony Wayne and Sullivan On both sides of our civil war there were many thousands of Irish soldiers and some of the most efficient officers of each army were Irishmen It took an Irishman to defeat Napoleon Ireland has given several Prime Ministers to England n Prime Minister to Austria and a President to the French republic An Irishman has sat on the Viceregal throne of India and the Duke of Teutuan one of the most illustrious of living Spaniards is of direct Irish descent his real name being ODonnell Byron de claredthat anJrishuian Sheridan had won the double distinction of writing the best comedy and making the most elo quent speech in the English language The commanderinChief of Gallant SixtyNinth Regiment In the New York Parade Newton G Rogers the well known attorney returned from New York City where he witnessed the great Dewey parade last week When asked his opin ion he stated that words were inadequate to describe its grandeur and magnitude one would have to see it to properly appreciate it The military display sur passed anything ever witnessed in thisI country The gallant Irish Sixtyninth of New York City and the Pennsylvania soldiers who appeared without their guns were vociferously cheered allalong the line while the dude stayathome Seventh was roundly hissed People in the leading hotels cheered but the hisses rose above the cheering The members looked neither to the right nor to the left but marched steadily on In strik ing contrast was the reception tendered the Sixtyninth which received an ovation along the route of march MrI Rogers says no body of men ever presented a more soldierly appearance When the white hats and green plumes of the band at their head came in sightI the cheers that greeted them showed the affection of the populace for the regiment that so promptly went to the front whileI the more wealthy one skulked TheyI wore handsome dark blue sack coats and pants of a lighter shade of the same color and their marching was perfect Rear Admiral Schley and Gov Roosevelt divided the honors of the day with Admiral Dewey while Sampson was treated to a decidedly cool reception People along the route fairly rose at Schley andI shouted Hurrah for the hero of SantiI ago There is the man that smashed Ceveras fleet and Hurrah for Schley Speaking of the arches he said theyI were both unique and handsome although very massive and it would be a pity were they not preserved- Mr Rogers also visited the Olympia and other war vessels allotments Mr John P Hayden M P said the object of their meeting was to plant tine people of that country on the green fields they saw around them and from which landlordism had driven them The land the reverend Chairman being passed amidst cheers the pro ceediugs terminated BEWARE OF FRAUDS There Will Be Many ofThem Appealing for Your Patronage Already there are evidences that this city will soon be the objective point r manyof those philanthropic merchants who will give one a suit of clothes with every pair of suspenders purchased There are now here houses advertising suits made to order for less than the cost of the goodsnit- When any of our readers want to make a purchase they should patronize those merchants and houses that employ home labor and endeavor to enhance the business prosperity of Louisville There is more deception practiced in the clothing business than in any other line and when a suit of clothes is desired they should be llattIchants who employ Louisville tailors at remunerative wages and do not have their work done in the sweat shops of New York Many have been deceived and they want their friends to know that better suits can be had for the money from the dealers in readymade clothing than are furnished by those houses without a home that are pulling the public leg for the benefit of English and Scotch products JOSEPH M SCHMIDT Joseph M Schmidt lic spirit and interest in our citys welfare Decorate and turn out Monday DEMANDS SUPREMACY Englands long drawn out and roundabout way of stating her grievances and demands in the Transvaal controversy having proven ineffectual in cajoling the Boers and her threats and war preparations to scare them into losing sight of her real purpose she has at last been exposed and bee 1fo11vi ted of falsehood as well The dispatches generally published have emanated from London and stated the demands of England to be the enfranchisement of the Out landers aliens their right to hold tom ce and full protection and equal privileges in their business enter prises and it was sought to impress the general public with the idea that the persistent refusal of the Boers to concede these just de mands would leave England no other alternative but a resort to force to obtain them The firm statesmanlike replies of the Boers despite London censorship have found their way to the public prints lJ and refuted Englfsh falsehood as well as show that England instead of demanding what was right under treaty was making demands in utter violation of treaty provisions that instead of the Boers obstinately refusing just demands they were u l ready to concede all that the treaty t a could be reasonably construed to mean and submit other matters to arbitration under the treatycof 1884 that England failing to estat fish a false understanding of theI I treaty of 1884 repudiated it and was seeking to coerce the Boers I into granting more than the treaty 1884 called for 10f And now comes the last English lie That the last note of Eu land to the Boers was noncommittal merely deferred a final ultimatum in the matter A telegram from the Transvaal gives the gist 01 Englands last note which prove her treachery and also shows hCI real purpose to be the subjugation of the Transvaal in violation coj treaty and law viz Indemnity for the cost of sending out troop disarmament of Transvaal forts suppression of Dr Leyds legation judicial and legislative independence of the judges equality of tli English and Dutch languages complete admission of the supremac of British interest throughout South Africa Quite different from anything England has given out as her demands heretofore not a word abot franchise property rights or business iutesests of Outlanders nc allusion even to the treaty with th Transvaal the only basis undo which England can have any il1st claim the claim of the robber and bully in direct contrast to tlu statements of her demands give to the public Of course the Boers will reject these demands and fight to th death rather than submit to a surrender of their rights and libertie as a nation to become a mer province and British subjects Thi is fully expected as troops and munitions of war are being rushed to Africa to enforce the demands and all is excitement and hurrah fin British circles The Boers are firm andactively preparing to resist th English invasion if it comes Thus if Englands warlike de mands and preparations are a bluff it will fail if in earnest there wil be a desperate war the end 01 which is not discernible since it i Englands declared purpose to es tablish the supremacy of Britisl interests throughout South Africa a proposition to which others than the Boers will demur and probabl interpose objections that will caus England to halt and refrain as sin has frequently done recently in other sections The supremacy of British interests are not recognized in this age of commercia progress and advancement all nations claim the right to a share in the worlds trade and recently they have enforced this claim South Africa will hardly be an exception It is now reported that Colone Jouaust President of the Dreyfui courtmartial who was so severely denounced by the professed friend of Dreyfus voted for his acquittal Of course this is only a report since the vote of individual mem bers of a courtmartial like a jury is secret and to divulge it is punishable by law It is therefor not known how the members of thE courtmartial voted but they werE unanimous in recommending wha amounted to remission of penalty pardon which was granted The decision of the School Board to test the compulsory educatiot law in an effort to compel thE parents of colored children to sent them to school is well enough so fa as it goes What about the hundred of white children whose parent put them to work in mills anc factories instead of sending then to school Have these white chil 1I dren no right to education unde the law Must they toil out their lives in ignorance and drudgery iif not worse because their parent need 1 the pittance earned by the little ones In this country at least the child has rights of which ever the parents can not justly depriv it it has the right to growth health and an equal chance in life education is essential to any possibility of rising above drudgery and poverty and every child is entitle to an education The compulsor education law is intended to give to the child its rights Enforce iit against white and black alike The hearty reception accorde Lipton the owner of the cup cot testant Shamrock at the Dewe reception in New York demonstrates that the American people respec and honor the man for his wort and energy His manly acknowledgment of the ovation showed that he accepted it in the proper spirit Though rich and titled his success has not turned his head He iis- polite social a man of the people a foreigner he greatly appreciate I time welcome and hospitality that greeted him but concluded with the I frank assertion that he had come to i this country with the purpose of taking a piece of American property back with minitlme cup Well while all of us hope thc Columbia will beat his yacht and keep thecup in America yet if iit is to be that we are to lose all will agree that they know of none they would rather win and have it than Sir Lipton with his Shamrock rAll will welcome the return of the good days for labor of the old Trades and Labor Assembly whei the workmen of the three Falls Cities were united in harmony and strength in one body The Cents Labor Union took the preliminary steps at its last meeting and we will l soon have the labor unions of New Albany and Jeffersonville represent ed in that body Not only will this be a boon to our brothers across the river who have been practically without protection for years but a benefit to Louisville workmen as well for in the old days some of the ablest and truest friends and workers for labor hailed from acros llthe river and their advice and efforts were always along the right line resulting in good to all For several years we have heard I of Theodore Hallam of Covington but never heard him till last week He is an able convincing and mos entertaining speakerone of tin kind we would prefer to have on lour side than against us Of course in the heat of the campaign Mr Hallam is being abused but he is a employment set to work to help hint or her into some thing else If we women contribute only ten cents monthly just imagine two small nickels for the comfort of men women and suffering babies in a congre gation of two thousand women there will be 200 a month for the fund What a deal could be done with such a gener ous amount to relieve the distress and misery of our neighbor Many noble women are now talking about this matter and they earnestly ask the cooperation of all earnest workers in every congrega tion to form societies as aids to the St Vincent de Paul where none such exists Let each woman or young lady only do nate ten cents a month for furnishing good new material for clothing and for coal and supplies during the winter and tio one will be poorer but many a bleak fireside will be warmer and many a sad heart lighter for the good work Pover tys terrors and pains strike home more vividly to us after we have tasted of their bitterness Ask those who have passed through the straits off poverty and they will tell you Gall is sweet and worm wQO precious compared to its harrowing draught Let us be merciful to the poor and remember that poverty ignor ance and crime are well called the devils trinityII For in the deep where darkness dwells The land of horror and despair Satan has built a dismal tomb And lays his storey of vengeance there v The Boston Pilot of September Pilot states was William B McBurnie He emigrated from Belfast to this country and reached Boston in 1845 He died in 1892 but at what place we are not told It was in the Pilot that the Croppy Boy the Irish Emigrants and the Orangemans Wife were first published They almost instantly grew into popular favor in Ireland and are in eluded in all Irish anthologies The pseudonym Carroll Malone was adopt ed by McBurnie probably because it was the custom of the time to write under a fictitious name For many years his real name was not known The style and sentiment of his poetry were so pure and true that it was a matter of much regret that the real name of Carroll Malone was not known to the world The Pilot conies to the assistance of biographers and lovers of Irish music and gives us the family name of this sweet bard May it serve also to revivify the touching strains that have so often awakened love of home and country in the hearts of our forefathers especi fly the Irish Emi grants The latest craze in London headgear for men is a soft green felt hat with a bright ribbon tied around it and a bunch of feathers at the back It looks for the world as though it were picked up in haste and Many of theta are receiving salaries that men might envy This latter part of the nineteenth century has brought fourth a new type of woman and she has come to stay Her sphere has broadened She earns her own living and knows no master If a man wants to marry her he must take her as an equal not as a subordinate She is no longer a mere moon revolving aronnd the masculine earth A preacher in Jersey City last week in speaking on this subject said I pity the young woman who starts out in life without the ability to earn her own living and relies only on a possible marriage for a lifelong support Her policy is a poor one whether she remains single or not It is a fact that multi tudes of young men find it about all they can do to support themselves Then how in the name of arithmetic and common sense can they take on an incompetent and extravagant annex The woman is indeed blessed who feels that were she left without her mate in the matrimonial ship she could make an independent honest
