Circuit Judge of this juJiUIRI district has certainly alirredsuprthe animals In some quar ters State Auditor Frank P James who writ anxious to hove lion Pew M McRoberts of this city appointed gave out an Interview lo tho reporters lor the pity papers at Frankfort In which ho bitterly scored Acting Governor Cox for the appointment ol Walker It develops that Mr McRobcrts de stared hl nsnf out o the race can1 Friday morning when he learned from friends here who had been to see Gov Cox In his behalf that th fact that he had refuccd to go to Lon don with Taylors legislature In 18JU during tho exciting times of the Goi bet contest was being held against him Mr McRobertx called up Auditor James and told him that If that fot was Iwlnij considered by the Acting Governor in tho appointment ot n man for such a Judicial position hi distinctly wnntod It understood that ho was not to bo considered an appli cant that ho hnd simply done what ho believed to bo right and his duty ai a legislator and would do it again If such condition should arise and ho were n member of the legislature again Mr McRoberts did not mince words In making Ids position understood In the premises and ho told Auditor James to tell the Acting Joy ernor Just how he felt about It A short while alter he had talked with tho Auditor Joy Cox announced tho appointment of Walker as Judge Auditor James seems to have felt very strong about the matter himself and Rave vent to his feeling In bra Interview in which he declares hat although he has hitherto favor rd Cox for Governor be is now igainst him unqualifiedly The letters he read me I was left un ler the Impression that be would not appoint Walker oven It he did make au appointment It 13 my Judgment that Cox made the appointment to please Senator W O Bradley ot Louisville and to se cure his Influence and his support In event bo seeks the republican nomi nation for governor Walker Is a Teat friend ot Bradfey and Bradley urged Ijla appointment I think that tine appointment wan made by Cox from purely selfish poljtlcol purposes and I know it will dQ Cox more harm than good The people of the State owe him a debt of gratitude however for In my Judgment It makes plain his position on the liQuor question thee cloaJ is thrown off nnd It seems to me that Cox Is lined up with the liquor peo lo He will not be able to fool them If he ever runs for office again fIe knows all about Walker for I told him Cox read me a letter this morning In which the Information was conveyed him that Walker had been un applicant for United States Dis tract Attorney for the Eastern Dis tract ot Kentucky and that Bradley withdrew his application because President Taft told him that he would not appoint Walker How caa an actlag governor an s meto appoint a man as Circuit Judge whom the President of the United States would not appoint as District Attorney Garrard county Is from 250 to 30ft Republican and it goes democratic year after year with Walker as the Republican leader I told Cox nil thin and other things and that Is the rea eon why ho told me that he would not make any appointments until he first consulted mo There were plenty of good mon la Jhe governor I had told Cox I was for him but now I am against him for any oiflec for If ho should be nominated and elected Governor Bradley would be Governor ot the State and the whisky ring vould Gov Cox since he appointed a circuit judge for this dls trlrt The situation certainly Invited their attendtlon Look at It The name of Hon P M McRoberts was presented to Cox for hIs con sideration in filling his vacancy Mr McRoberts Is a lawyer eminently qualified for the judgeship Ever those who opposed him cannot truth fully deny this Furthermore he lithe recognized leader of the temperance forces in this section a men that not only preaches temperance but whose dally life proclaims his devotion to that cause We Js also Ii lifelong republicanbelonging to l that almost extinct class who are republicans trod principle and not from a desire to merely satisfy an ins satiable hanger for office Yet Cox refused to appoint such a man to the judicial vacancy What was the rea son for this refusal I Cox told Auditor Frank James that he objected to Mc Roberts because he declined to follow the republican members of the legis lature to London when Taylor at tempted to adjourn the legislature to that place McRoberta being then a member of the legislature If this be true the Lieutenant Governors conception of what conutltutes fitness for the judiciary Is this That a judge must of Ufe people His ideal of a judge is strikingly Illustrat ed In the notorious Jeffreys who once graced and disgraced the English bench I Auditor James who has long known Cox intimately declares They ran as often as they walked except la the greater beat of midday Lithe freelimbed lightly clad deep chested and strong la this emergency they headed straight across the bill instead of taking the speedy and eager on the top of the bill There cried tho was pointing to seaward His eyesight was better than hers but hers was still sufficiently keen as she followed his outstretched arm and extended finger to see upon the far horizon a dark object which was un doubtedly a ship A hazy column of smoke elongated bektnd It and told her it was a steamer You were right she said at last a little sob in her voice It Is a ship It means rescue The world is coming to our shores My world Is here he returned laying his hand upon her shoulder and for answer she drew closer to him glad to feel his clasp you He turned and bounded away like a young deer She watched him through the trees and then sat down upon the summit of the hill and stared toward the ship She was glad of course that they were to be rescued but as In the Joy bf their love there was sorrow so In her gladness there was apprehension That test of which she had dreamed the night before was now to bo Complete She would postpone the telling of her story un til he could hear In comment upon It the voice of the world They had lived in Eden Eden with out a serpent They had plucked the tree of knowledge at will and no consequences In all their he had never seen her WeepTearawere entirely foreign to his experience He knew what sorrow was whit sadness was what sympathy was lot his heart had been torn when she hadreed to him 8Qtrowandbl8pathetic in the Old Covenant arid the ffew had appealed to him profoundly but his were not easy cars He had sorer shed any Ho lad never seSn any He was appalled therefore laldbinsad heard the evidence ef her grief t He dropped the btu to the sod and I knelt beside her Has tho sight of the ship made you weep ho said softly 1 wish that I bad never come to tell you it was there We have been so happy together you and I said the woman This island has been my world my haven my heaven rather and you have been humanity to mo but now the earth opens before you You will have oth er hopes other ambitions perhaps Dont say it protested the man vehemently I shall have nothing nothing but you anywhere everywhere and besides nothing is changed See the smoke grows faInt- er the ship more dim She passes beyond Things shall be as they were I We shall live on and love on I Her desolation her sorrow appealed to him profoundly He took her in his arms He laid her head gently upon his shoulder There was protee lion aad tenderness as well aa pas lion In his touch Together he whispered patting her hair softly alone you and II For one delicious moment with closed eyes she let herself be so soothed and comforted But her bet ter nature woke oa the instant as it wereNo she said drawing away from him gently It would not be right We belong In the world of men Men and women are not men and women until they have lived among their fel lows until they havo fought down the temptations of which we know noth ing here and have conquered them out there Give me tho flint and steel Imust call back the ship Ho stooped as she spoke and picked up the little sliver box Ho extended his hand toward her and then sud denly drew It back You cannot light tho beacon be said Cannot she cried No for I will not give you the flint and steel You must give It to me I will not I am the stronger and you cannot tako It from me he returned with growing firmness- It was the first time in all their in tercourse that ho had disobeyed a command She looked at him amazed her heart nevertheless throbbing at the mastery in his tone at the thought that he was willing to throw away the world for her It is true he had had no experience of that ho was giving up but he was not entirely Ignorant of what lay beyond the horizon and she had presented it in such a way that it glowed with color and life and charm The evil the sordid and tho wretched had been lightly al luded to Just definitely enough to shade tho picture and bring out the higher lights of civilization lily was not tho decision therefore of an un tutored inexperienced savage not the abandonment ot a toy by a child there was some reality In it and tho reality measured his affection Her heart leaped In her breast at that thought For one fleeting moment she acquiesced Things would go on In the old way But things could not go on In the old way For a day and a night in spite of the great change that had come to their feelings life had flowed on as usual but there was a limit to human power It was bet ter wbatever betide that they should go back to civilization The woman Stared at him long and earnestly her lip trembling hur face pale her eyes shining They stood speechless at gaze for a moment and then she spokeYou are right she said my pow er over you has gone I can no longer command Mine has ceased to be the supreme will but I beg you I entrat you I pray you give me the flint and steel See on my knees I ask youl She sank down before him In an at titude which he knew to be that of prayer They had often read the sacred Scriptures and bad said their prayers together on the sand or beneath the trees since she too In the solitude had seen God and believed- I cannot 1 will not be answered Ijoarsely stepping nearer to her- No she said you mUll not touch me you shall not touch mo 1 shall be to you as a stranger unless you take roe by force if you will not let me light that beacon No said the man doggedly When the and women live IWhy not now must hear the voice of the world in comment upon what I say But If we do not go back Theru will be a Pf ret between us which I will carry to my graveIt would be fatal to our happiness You see wo must call back the ship Give me the filnt and steel for Gods sake It you love me man bad never adjured him In that IShe before He stood irresolute a moment and dropped the box at her feet She had conquered conquered by appealing to his love for her Noth ing else she felt would have moved himEagerly she opened the sliver box and took thence the tiny Implements Fortunately they were ln the heart ot the dry season To strike a spark was easy to communicate It to the tin derllke brushwood was easier stilt In a moment catching the inflammable wood dried out by the tropic sun the flames roared through the great mass The cliff or peak at the top of the Is land made a background for the flame and soon a pillar of fire 20 or 30 feet high leaped and curled up into the still air of the morning The woman beckoned The two ran around the peak of the rock until they were sheltered from the fierce heat of tho tire From where they stood they could see the ship Do you think naked the man that the people on the ship will see the flame They cannot fall to see it And how will they regard IU As a signal And what will they do Turn about and head for tho is landAnd how can we toll what they are doingWhen the smoke ceases to slow gate she replied It will show us that they have turned and are heading this way There was no breeze apparently and the smoke would follow the wake of the ship They watched the little speck on tho horizon with strained in tensity for a few momenta How if she passes aDOf asked the man at last I shall take it as a sign said the woman slowly thatLookl she cried In sudden gladness The ship had turned and the cloud of smoke now rose straight above her in the still air They have seen the signal went on the woman They will come here We shall be taken away Itls your fault nald tho man grimly I wanted nothing but to bo alone with you CHAPTER XIII The Long Search Mr Valentine Arthur Langford was wearily pacing the quarter deck of his magnificent yacht the Southern Cross Mr Langford was an intensely dis appointed ant embittered man He had made two ventures which by a stretch of language in one case at least could be called matrimonial and both of them had resulted In disaster Death opportunely had relieved him of one wife the other who had stood in the place of the torm without the legal ceremony orjhevjplrltual benediction had anl hed irner circumstances so mysterious that he had no Idea wheth er she was alive or dead On a certain night some three years ago he had a dim remembrance that he had be bared like a brute to a woman His remembrance was only dim as to de tails It was entirely clear as to the factWhat had happened u a result of his conduct he could not clearly state The next morning the crew had found him lying Insensible on the cabin floor with a fractured skull The woman was gone also the power boat whIch had trailed astern of tho yacht in the pleasant weather Such was his physi cal condition that when he was not unconscious be was delirious lie had been able to give no coherent account of affairs and equally unable io give any directions as to the future i1tive menta of tho yacht which had been bound nowhere In particular upon a pjeasure cruise The old aalling master and captain much distressed by the situation and the emergency in which he found him sell suddenly plunged decided that his best course in fact his only course was to get back to civilization and a doctor as soon as possible lie had Instantly put tha yacht about and headed for the nearest land where he might hope to get suitable care for his terribly ill young employer He pusked the yacht to the utmost speed and in three weeks dropped anchor in Honolulu Just In time to save the young mans life Indeed for a long time It was touch and go as to wheth er his life could be saved at all and It was not until nearly a year bad elapsed before the Southern Cross sailed for1 sh Francisco wth a weak Mad shaky but convalescent owner pa hftC J5 4Vtsr deck The departure of Katharine Brentori with Valentine Langford had made a great sensatle hut it waa nothing to tbe sensation which raged when It be game knbwa that Valentine Langford bad returned without her She was a woman of too such importance she had played too large a part in the affairs of the world civilization had manifested too uch Interest in her her to drop out obits sight without at least making an effort to find her The position of Mr Valen interestinglydifficult qUlry Mr Langferds previous mar un4nown plete and adequate Idea ot the terms of tho union which had been entered upon so blithely between Langford and Miss Drenton that the first question that met him when he came back along WM as to which one feal vipeatad Had the woman come to her senses had the man grown tired of her bad they parted and where was the worn an 1 Thes4 w0reivqaeries which were put to him wlththe dlre simplicity ot the American public through its impe rious representatives the reporters And to these questions Mr Langford could return no adequate Cnswer what ever except tho truth which he could not bring himself to tell lIe declared that she had left the yacht in the South seas that he did not know her present whereabouts and refused to say anything further privately or in public Miss Brenton had no near relations what was everybodys bust ness was nobodys and presently public interest in he declined She and her philosophy wero practically for gotten by all But Langford himself Fortune which had done him some evil turns here however Interposed to his advantage The lady who legally bore his name departed this life and left him a free man Brute though he had been Langford was not without some strong idea of honor and decency Indeed he had enjoyed long and undistributed hours of meditation upon his sins of omission and commis sion during his period of convalescence and the calm consideration of character and career had done him good At heart In spite of his brutal conduct for which drink had largely been responsible he was a gentleman and capable of things fine and high under the stimulus of some really great emotion He had como to real ize to put It mildly what an awful fool ho had been to say nothing of his villainy What had led him to this realization bad been the remembrance of tho hours he had passed with Kathy arine Brcnton before the clouds had arIsen whIch had culminated In that awful storm the recollection of which fairly made him shudder However he had deceived her by professed ad herence tTher wild theories and Im possible pbUjsophles he had honestly loved herand association with her had been of benefit to him If he only had not given away to his temper and his appetite I If it had not been for his former obligation Ho had married his wife In a moment of boyish Infatuation The union had been impossible almost from tho first She was little more than an adventuress much older than he who had entrapped him for his money There had been a separation on a liberal financial basis to which the woman had readily even cheerfully agreed and he had no lingering re mains of affection to hold him back Her death was only a relief to him Ho felt that he owed reparation to Katherine Brenton and bo was more willing to pay the debt because he was honestly and genuinely in love with her so far as a man of his tempera ment could be in lovo with a woman Ho wanted to make amends for his treatment He would have given any thing he possessed to have been able Mr Langford Was an Intensely Dis appointed and Embittered Man to say how ashamed he was tall that he had done and to beg her to forgive him and marry him The death of his father and the ne cessity for the administration of the vast interests of the bonanza kings estate prevented him from at once engaging upon the search which he promised himself hO would make but he expedited matters sometimes to his own loss as rapidly as he could and after nearly A years stay in San Franclsfo Qe found himself in post rtake his qUest for a year fherejifteiJ h tahdtlle Southern Cross Jrh rs4 the uaezdiored uavfs Ited w f use 84uth seas He the crew of the Southern Cross who knew nothing as to the cause of the eagerness with the ex ception of the ship master looked upon him as a harmless visionary They had been away so long and had visited so many islands with sa much hardship oftentimes with so much danger from uncharted reefs in the un known seas that they were one and all Wildly anxious to return from theto them aimless
